Chronic naltrindole administration does not modify the inhibitory effect of morphine on vocalization responses in the tail electric stimulation test in rats.

To address the existence of possible functional interactions between delta- and mu- receptors in relation to the affective component of pain, we have studied the effects of functional blockade of delta-receptors by a chronic treatment with naltrindole (1 mg/kg, 8 consecutive days) on antinociceptive responses to morphine (2 and 5 mg/kg) in the tail electric stimulation test, in adult male rats. The thresholds for the motor response (tail withdrawal), vocalization during stimulus and vocalization afterdischarge were assessed. These responses are considered to be integrated at spinal, medulla ob

Maternal vocalisations and other sounds in the fetal lamb's sound environment.

In a first experiment a miniaturised radio hydrophone was implanted inside the amniotic sac in three pregnant ewes and recordings were made from 3 weeks before the lambs were born until they had emerged; these recordings showed that the sound of the mother's voice was slightly louder when picked up by the hydrophone inside the amniotic sac than when picked up by a microphone beside her flank and that sounds recorded during labour included long and loud low frequency sounds associated with contractions, and an increase, compared with before labour, in the incidence of sounds produced by the mat

Aerodynamic and nonlinear dynamic acoustic analysis of tension asymmetry in excised canine larynges.

PURPOSE: To model tension asymmetry caused by superior laryngeal nerve paralysis (SLNP) in excised larynges and apply perturbation, nonlinear dynamic, and aerodynamic analyses. METHOD: SLNP was modeled in 8 excised larynges using sutures and weights to mimic cricothyroid (CT) muscle function. Weights were removed from one side to create tension asymmetry, mimicking unilateral SLNP. Two sets of weights were used, 1 light and 1 heavy. Five conditions were evaluated: (a) no tension, (b) symmetrical light tension, (c) asymmetrical light tension, (d) symmetrical heavy tension, and (e) asymmetrical

The Cole Relaxation Frequency as a Parameter to Identify Cancer in Lung Tissue: Preliminary Animal and Ex Vivo Patient Studies.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is the world's leading cause of cancer deaths, and diagnosis remains challenging. Lung cancer starts as small nodules; early and accurate diagnosis allows timely surgical resection of malignant nodules while avoiding unnecessary surgery in patients with benign nodules. OBJECTIVE: The Cole relaxation frequency (CRF) is a derived electrical bioimpedance signature, which may be utilized to distinguish cancerous tissues from normal tissues. METHODS: Human testing ex vivo was conducted with NoduleScan in freshly resected lung tissue from 30 volunteer patients undergoing re

Neonatal immune stimulation results in sex-specific changes in ultrasonic vocalizations but does not affect seizure susceptibility in neonatal mice.

Neuroinflammation during the neonatal period has been linked to disorders such as autism and epilepsy. In this study, we investigated the early life behavioral consequences of a single injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) at postnatal day 10 (PD10) in mice. To assess deficits in communication, we performed the isolation-induced ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) test at PD12. To determine if early life immune stimulus could alter seizure susceptibility, latency to flurothyl-induced generalized seizures was measured at 4 hours (hrs), 2 days, or 5 days after LPS injections. LPS had a sex-dependent

Ultrasonic vocalization emission is altered following neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain injury in mice.

Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury leads to cognitive impairments including social communication disabilities. Current treatments do not sufficiently target these impairments, therefore new tools are needed to examine social communication in models for neonatal brain injury. Ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) during early life show potential as a measurement for social development and reflect landmark developmental stages in neonatal mice. However, changes in USV emission early after HI injury have not been found yet. Our current study examines USV patterns and classes in the first 3 day

Fascia implantation with fibroblast growth factor on vocal fold paralysis.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this prospective study was to determine the effect of autologous transplantation of fascia into the vocal fold (ATFV) with controlled release of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) on unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) in a rat model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) section was performed on 15 rats. Ten rats received an autologous fascia implant and gelatin hydrogel with or without bFGF (1 μg) to their larynxes (fascia only, "fascia group"; bFGF + fascia, "fascia + bFGF group"), while the rest underwent RLN transection ("RLN sect

Apomorphine susceptibility and prenatal infection alter neurodevelopment, synaptic density and anticipatory behavior in rats.

Schizophrenia is a complex psychiatric disorder, driven by genetic and environmental factors. While individual risk genes have limited impact, polygenic susceptibility increases the likelihood of schizophrenia and heightens sensitivity to environmental stressors, such as prenatal immune activation. Yet, preclinical studies often focused on single-gene mutations, leaving polygenic influences largely unexplored. Using the apomorphine-susceptible (APO-SUS) rat model, which exhibits schizophrenia-like features, we investigated how polygenic susceptibility influences early neurodevelopment, synapti

Occurrences of non-linear phenomena and vocal harshness in dog whines as indicators of stress and ageing.

During social interactions, acoustic parameters of tetrapods' vocalisations reflect the emotional state of the caller. Higher levels of spectral noise and the occurrence of irregularities (non-linear phenomena NLP) might be negative arousal indicators in alarm calls, although less is known about other distress vocalisations. Family dogs experience different levels of stress during separation from their owner and may vocalise extensively. Analysing their whines can provide evidence for the relationship between arousal and NLP. We recorded 167 family dogs' separation behaviour including vocalisa

Quantification of brainstem norepinephrine relative to vocal impairment and anxiety in the Pink1-/- rat model of Parkinson disease.

Vocal communication impairment and anxiety are co-occurring and interacting signs of Parkinson Disease (PD) that are common, poorly understood, and under-treated. Both vocal communication and anxiety are influenced by the noradrenergic system. In light of this shared neural substrate and considering that noradrenergic dysfunction is a defining characteristic of PD, tandem investigation of vocal impairment and anxiety in PD relative to noradrenergic mechanisms is likely to yield insights into the underlying disease-specific causes of these impairments. In order to address this gap in knowledge,

fMRI Reveals a Novel Region for Evaluating Acoustic Information for Mate Choice in a Female Songbird.

Selection of sexual partners is among the most critical decisions that individuals make and is therefore strongly shaped by evolution. In social species, where communication signals can convey substantial information about the identity, state, or quality of the signaler, accurate interpretation of communication signals for mate choice is crucial. Despite the importance of social information processing, to date, relatively little is known about the neurobiological mechanisms that contribute to sexual decision making and preferences. In this study, we used a combination of whole-brain functional

Hearing regulates Drosophila aggression.

Aggression is a universal social behavior important for the acquisition of food, mates, territory, and social status. Aggression in Drosophila is context-dependent and can thus be expected to involve inputs from multiple sensory modalities. Here, we use mechanical disruption and genetic approaches in Drosophila melanogaster to identify hearing as an important sensory modality in the context of intermale aggressive behavior. We demonstrate that neuronal silencing and targeted knockdown of hearing genes in the fly's auditory organ elicit abnormal aggression. Further, we show that exposure to cou

Effects of tail docking and teeth clipping on the physiological responses, wounds, behavior, growth, and backfat depth of pigs.

The objective of this experiment was to compare the effects of tail docking and teeth clipping on the growth and behavior of pigs. Pigs (n = 126) from 21 litters (6 pigs/litter) were blocked by birth weight, and assigned at 3 d of age within blocks to either teeth clipping and tail docking (processed) or control (sham-processed). Vocalizations of pigs were recorded during the procedures, and behavior was observed during the lactation, nursery, and growing periods. Blood samples were collected on d 21 to measure serum IgG concentrations. Wounds on the body and tail were assessed by inspecting b

Convergent acoustic field of view in echolocating bats.

Most echolocating bats exhibit a strong correlation between body size and the frequency of maximum energy in their echolocation calls (peak frequency), with smaller species using signals of higher frequency than larger ones. Size-signal allometry or acoustic detection constraints imposed on wavelength by preferred prey size have been used to explain this relationship. Here we propose the hypothesis that smaller bats emit higher frequencies to achieve directional sonar beams, and that variable beam width is critical for bats. Shorter wavelengths relative to the size of the emitter translate int

Social performance reveals unexpected vocal competency in young songbirds.

Vocal ontogeny in songbirds provides a good model for understanding how complex motor behavior, including speech, is learned. For birdsong, as for other motor learning, it has generally been assumed that a subject's motor output at any point during learning represents what the subject has learned to produce by that time. Here, we show, however, that juvenile zebra finches partway through song learning, singing immature song, are capable of producing song with much more mature properties, depending on the behavioral context. In these birds, we were able to elicit courtship (female-directed) son

The influence of social affiliation on individual vocal signatures of northern resident killer whales (Orcinus orca).

Northern resident killer whales (Orcinus orca) live in highly stable groups and use group-specific vocal signals, but individual variation in calls has not been described previously. A towed beam-forming array was used to ascribe stereotyped pulsed calls with two independently modulated frequency contours to visually identified individual killer whales in Johnstone Strait, British Columbia. Overall, call similarity determined using neural networks differed significantly between different affiliation levels for both frequency components of all the call types analysed. This method distinguished

Simultaneous recording of pituitary oxytocin secretion and myometrial activity in oestrous mares exposed to various breeding stimuli.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different breeding stimuli on uterine contractility and pituitary oxytocin release in five oestrous mares, in order to design better treatments for mares with defective physical uterine clearance mechanisms. Electrodes and strain gauges were implanted surgically on the uterine myometrium and myometrial activity was monitored with a Grass polygraph. A catheter was placed non-surgically in the intercavernous sinus of each oestrous mare to sample pituitary venous blood and a second catheter was placed in the jugular vein. Continuous sampling

Neural correlates of frog calling. Masculinization by androgens.

Neural correlates of mating calling can be recorded from isolated brainstems of male, Northern leopard frogs after the circuits for this behavior have been triggered by electrical stimulation of the preoptic area. Correlates can be evoked reliably and by a stimulus of low amplitude. However, such correlates can be evoked only rarely from female brainstems, and then only by a much larger stimulus. The sensitivity to triggering in female brainstems can be masculinized by previous treatment of the intact frog with testosterone propionate or dihydrotestosterone, but not by estradiol benzoate. Transplantation of olfactory ensheathing cells to evaluate functional recovery after peripheral nerve injury.

Olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) are neural crest cells which allow growth and regrowth of the primary olfactory neurons. Indeed, the primary olfactory system is characterized by its ability to give rise to new neurons even in adult animals. This particular ability is partly due to the presence of OECs which create a favorable microenvironment for neurogenesis. This property of OECs has been used for cellular transplantation such as in spinal cord injury models. Although the peripheral nervous system has a greater capacity to regenerate after nerve injury than the central nervous system, com
