Comparative study of volatile organic compounds in ambient air using observed mixing ratios and initial mixing ratios taking chemical loss into account - A case study in a typical urban area in Beijing.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can react with atmospheric radicals while being transported after being emitted, resulting in substantial losses. Using only observed VOC mixing ratios to assess VOC pollution, is therefore problematic. The observed mixing ratios and initial mixing ratios taking chemical loss into consideration were performed using data for 90 VOCs in the atmosphere in a typical urban area in Beijing in winter 2013 to gain a more accurate view of VOC pollution. The VOC sources, ambient VOC mixing ratios and compositions, variability and influencing factors, contributions to ne…

Comparison of observed and estimated concentrations of volatile organic compounds using a Gaussian dispersion model in the vicinity of factories: an estimation approach to determine annual average concentrations and human health risks.

The concentrations of toluene and dichloromethane in the vicinity of factories that emitted a large amount of toluene or dichloromethane into the atmosphere were determined for the comparison of observed and estimated concentrations using a Gaussian dispersion model (METI-LIS model). Greater concentrations of toluene and dichloromethane than the guideline value described in the Air Quality Guidelines for Europe, second edition, were measured in the vicinity of factories (270 and 470 micro g/m(3) for toluene and 510 and 660 micro g/m(3) for dichloromethane). Toluene and dichloromethane may have

Understanding the effect of storage temperature on the quality of semi-skimmed UHT hydrolyzed-lactose milk: an insight on release of free amino acids, formation of volatiles organic compounds and browning.

Proteolytic side activity of the lactase preparations (LPs) intended for ultra-high temperature hydrolyzed-lactose milk (UHLM) production induces changes in the product quality during shelf-life. The problem is particularly relevant when the enzyme is added aseptically in the packaging ("in pack" process), while the negative quality effects can be mitigated following the "in batch" process adding the LP before thermal sterilization. In this study, we monitored the quality over time of UHLM produced "in batch" and stored at 4, 20, 30 and 40 °C focusing on proteolysis, volatiles organic compound

Development and validation of an HPLC-MS/MS method for the simultaneous analysis of volatile organic compound metabolites, hydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine in human urine.

Humans are widely and concurrently exposed to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, few studies have reported the internal co-exposure levels of these chemicals in occupational and general populations. Specifically, the associations revealed between the urinary levels of metabolites of VOCs (mVOCs), hydroxylated PAHs (OH-PAHs), and oxidative stress biomarkers for humans remain limited. In this study, a method based on solid-phase extraction (SPE) and liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was developed for the si…

Microbial Volatile Organic Compound (VOC)-Driven Dissolution and Surface Modification of Phosphorus-Containing Soil Minerals for Plant Nutrition: An Indirect Route for VOC-Based Plant-Microbe Communications.

We investigated the ability of microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) emitted by Bacillus megaterium (a well-known MVOC producer) to modify the dissolution kinetics and surface of hydroxyapatite, a natural soil mineral. Facilitated phosphate release was induced by the airborne MVOCs in a time-dependent manner. Use of each standard chemical of the MVOCs then revealed that acetic and oxalic acids are crucial for the phenomenon. In addition, the ability of such MVOCs to engineer the apatite surfaces was evidenced by FT-IR spectra showing the COO- band variation with incubation time and the …

Comprehensive analysis of the association between volatile organic compound pollutants and chronic kidney disease in hypertensive populations: insights from multi-omics approaches and identification of potential therapeutic targets.

Environmental pollutants, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), are increasingly linked to chronic kidney disease (CKD), yet this association in hypertensive populations is not well understood. This study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2018 to explore the association between VOC exposure and CKD in 1159 hypertensive adults (representing 33.6 million people). Sixteen urinary metabolites of VOC exposure (mVOCs) were analyzed with multiple statistical methods like logistic regression and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression, alongside ma…

Determination of nicotine, tar, volatile organic compounds and carbonyls in mainstream cigarette smoke using a glass filter and a sorbent cartridge followed by the two-phase/one-pot elution method with carbon disulfide and methanol.

We have developed a new analytical method for the determination of nicotine, tar, volatile organic compounds and carbonyls in main-stream cigarette smoke using a sorbent cartridge packed with Carboxen 572 (CX-572) and a Cambridge filter pad (CFP) followed by the two-phase/one-pot elution method. A CX-572 cartridge is installed between the intake of the CFP and the pump of the smoking machine. Gaseous compounds collected with the CX-572 cartridge and total particulate matter (TPM) collected with the CFP are coeluted simultaneously in the same vial and then analyzed by high-performance liquid ch…

Analysis of Listeria using exogenous volatile organic compound metabolites and their detection by static headspace-multi-capillary column-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (SHS-MCC-GC-IMS).

Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive bacterium and an opportunistic food-borne pathogen which poses significant risk to the immune-compromised and pregnant due to the increased likelihood of acquiring infection and potential transmission of infection to the unborn child. Conventional methods of analysis suffer from either long turn-around times or lack the ability to discriminate between Listeria spp. reliably. This paper investigates an alternative method of detecting Listeria spp. using two novel enzyme substrates that liberate exogenous volatile organic compounds in the presence of α-m…

Modeling an air pollution episode in northwestern United States: identifying the effect of nitrogen oxide and volatile organic compound emission changes on air pollutants formation using direct sensitivity analysis.

UNLABELLED: Air quality impacts of volatile organic compound (VOC) and nitrogen oxide (NO(x)) emissions from major sources over the northwestern United States are simulated. The comprehensive nested modeling system comprises three models: Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ), Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF), and Sparse Matrix Operator Kernel Emissions (SMOKE). In addition, the decoupled direct method in three dimensions (DDM-3D) is used to determine the sensitivities of pollutant concentrations to changes in precursor emissions during a severe smog episode in July of 2006. Online sequential analysis of volatile and semivolatile organic compounds in water matrices by double robotic sample preparations and dual-channel mono and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry system.

The monitoring of organic compounds in aquatic matrices poses challenges due to its complexity and time-intensive nature. To address these challenges, we introduce a novel approach utilizing a dual-channel mono (1D) and comprehensive two-dimensional (2D) gas chromatography coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-TOFMS) system, integrated with a robotic pretreatment platform, for online monitoring of both volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in water matrices. Employing the robotic platform, we establish a suite of online liquid-liquid extr…

Urinary volatile organic compound metabolites and depressive symptoms among U.S. adults with cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome stages 0-3: NHANES-based associations and in silico multi-omics insights.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a major global public health burden, and environmental pollutants are increasingly associated with depressive symptoms. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are ubiquitous environmental contaminants with known neurotoxic potential; however, their associations with depressive symptoms, particularly in metabolically vulnerable populations such as those with cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome, remain insufficiently characterized. METHODS: We conducted a population-based study of adults with CKM stages 0-3 using data from NHANES 2011-2018, assessing associations…

The Profile of Urinary Headspace Volatile Organic Compounds After 12-Week Intake of Oligofructose-Enriched Inulin by Children and Adolescents with Celiac Disease on a Gluten-Free Diet: Results of a Pilot, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial.

The concentration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can inform about the metabolic condition of the body. In the small intestine of untreated persons with celiac disease (CD), chronic inflammation can occur, leading to nutritional deficiencies, and consequently to functional impairments of the whole body. Metabolomic studies showed differences in the profile of VOCs in biological fluids of patients with CD in comparison to healthy persons; however, there is scarce quantitative and nutritional intervention information. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the supplementation o…

Exploring stingless bee honey from selected regions of Peninsular Malaysia through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-based untargeted metabolomics.

Volatile organic compounds in honey are known for their considerable impact on the organoleptic properties of honey, such as aroma, flavor, taste, and texture. The type and composition of volatile organic compounds are influenced by entomological, geographical, and botanical origins; thus, these compounds have the potential to be chemical markers. Sixty-two volatile compounds were identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry from 30 Heterotrigona itama (H. itama) honey samples from 3 different geographical origins. Hydrocarbons and benzene derivatives were the dominant classes of vola…
