Carbon Dioxide Emissions from Acid Mine Drainage Neutralization Are a Major Component of Metal Mining Carbon Footprints.

Achieving the transition to net zero human greenhouse gas emissions requires a large increase in metal production by mining. Acid mine drainage (AMD) neutralization is a potentially important but poorly quantified source of mining industry CO2 emissions. Here, we show that AMD neutralization-related CO2 emissions can be a major component of metal production carbon footprints. Data from the rivers and estuarine system draining the central and eastern Iberian Pyrite Belt show that AMD neutralization emits 32 ± 11 kt CO2/yr. Normalized to historic copper production rates, AMD-associated emissions

Conversion of municipal solid waste to carboxylic acids using a mixed culture of mesophilic microorganisms.

Waste biomass was anaerobically converted to carboxylate salts by using a mixed culture of acid-forming microorganisms. Municipal solid waste (MSW) was the energy source (carbohydrates) and sewage sludge (SS) was the nutrient source (minerals, metals, and vitamins). Four fermentors were arranged in series and solids and liquids were transferred countercurrently in opposite directions, which allows both high conversions and high product concentrations. Fresh biomass was added to Fermentor 1 (highest carboxylic acid concentration) and fresh media was added to Fermentor 4 (most digested biomass).

Biomining: metal recovery from ores with microorganisms.

Biomining is an increasingly applied biotechnological procedure for processing of ores in the mining industry (biohydrometallurgy). Nowadays the production of copper from low-grade ores is the most important industrial application and a significant part of world copper production already originates from heap or dump/stockpile bioleaching. Conceptual differences exist between the industrial processes of bioleaching and biooxidation. Bioleaching is a conversion of an insoluble valuable metal into a soluble form by means of microorganisms. In biooxidation, on the other hand, gold is predominantly

Investigations into the environmental fate and effects of iopromide (ultravist), a widely used iodinated X-ray contrast medium.

lodinated X-ray contrast media are pharmaceuticals which are biologically inert and metabolically stable during their passage through the body and are excreted almost completely within a day into waste water. They are not readily biodegradable. However, in a test system simulating sewage treatment, we were able to show that the model compound iopromide (N,N'-bis(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)-2,4,6-triiodo-5-methoxyacetylamino-N-methyliso-phthalamide) was amenable to primary degradation. The resulting degradation product (5-amino-N'N'-bis(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)-2,4,6-triiodo-N-methyliso-phthalamide) showe

Analysis of the Thermal Insulation and Fire-Resistance Capacity of Particleboards Made from Vine (Vitis vinifera L.) Prunings.

: In Europe, vine (Vitis vinifera L.) prunings are one of the most abundant types of agricultural waste. It is, therefore, essential to organize the removal of vine waste from the fields in order to prevent the spread of fires, pests, or diseases. Using plant biomass in buildings will help achieve greater energy efficiency and cause less environmental pollution. The objectives of this work were to minimize burning of agricultural waste, reduce the use of natural wood, and obtain a product by using vine pruning waste to manufacture particleboards, assessing their use as an insulating material a

Angiotensin-II-induced Muscle Wasting is Mediated by 25-Hydroxycholesterol via GSK3β Signaling Pathway.

While angiotensin II (ang II) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiac cachexia (CC), the molecules that mediate ang II's wasting effect have not been identified. It is known TNF-α level is increased in patients with CC, and TNF-α release is triggered by ang II. We therefore hypothesized that ang II induced muscle wasting is mediated by TNF-α. Ang II infusion led to skeletal muscle wasting in wild type (WT) but not in TNF alpha type 1 receptor knockout (TNFR1KO) mice, suggesting that ang II induced muscle loss is mediated by TNF-α through its type 1 receptor. Microarray analysis iden

Stabilization/solidification of hazardous and radioactive wastes with alkali-activated cements.

This paper reviews progresses on the use of alkali-activated cements for stabilization/solidification of hazardous and radioactive wastes. Alkali-activated cements consist of an alkaline activator and cementing components, such as blast furnace slag, coal fly ash, phosphorus slag, steel slag, metakaolin, etc., or a combination of two or more of them. Properly designed alkali-activated cements can exhibit both higher early and later strengths than conventional portland cement. The main hydration product of alkali-activated cements is calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) with low Ca/Si ratios or alumi

The Power of Drosophila in Modeling Cancer Cachexia.

Late-stage cancer patients often exhibit cachexia, a wasting syndrome characterized by the loss of muscle and adipose tissues. However, the extent to which these wasting effects directly contribute to mortality remains unclear. Drosophila, a well-conserved model organism, has been instrumental in demonstrating systemic energy wasting and mortality in the context of tumors, similar to mice and humans. Research in Drosophila has elucidated the underlying mechanisms by which tumor-associated secreted proteins cause muscle atrophy and lipid loss, ultimately leading to energy wasting. Nevertheless,

Migration behavior of impurities during the purification of waste graphite powders.

Metal-laden solid wastes (e.g., waste graphite powders) have attracted great attention owing to their hazardous effects on the surrounding soil and water. Additionally, the metal-bearing impurities also hinder the reutilization of waste graphite powders. Thus, it is necessary to remove these inorganic impurities and figure out the removal mechanism of impurities in the purification process. In this study, an alkaline roasting-water washing-acid leaching (AWA) method was used to upgrade the waste graphite powders, and the migration behavior of diverse impurities has been qualitatively and quant

Sponges sneeze mucus to shed particulate waste from their seawater inlet pores.

Sponges, among the oldest extant multicellular organisms on Earth,1 play a key role in the cycling of nutrients in many aquatic ecosystems.2-5 They need to employ strategies to prevent clogging of their internal filter system by solid wastes,6-8 but self-cleaning mechanisms are largely unknown. It is commonly assumed that sponges remove solid waste with the outflowing water through distinct outflow openings (oscula).3,9 Here, we present time-lapse video footage and analyses of sponge waste revealing a completely different mechanism of particle removal in the Caribbean tube sponge Aplysina arch

Novel red mud waste-derived magnetic geopolymer spheres, made without the addition of any extra iron compounds, for the removal of wastewater contaminants.

In this work, and for the first time, the production of waste-based magnetic geopolymer spheres by a simple heat treatment under a reductive atmosphere is reported. Upon heat treatment, the iron oxide present in bauxite wastes (red mud), used as a solid precursor, is reduced to magnetite, thus producing magnetic spheres without the need for the addition of any secondary magnetic materials. The magnetisation of these mm-size materials reached 5.34 A m2 kg-1, suggesting they contain up to 6 wt% magnetite. This was demonstrated to be sufficient for their magnetic separation/removal, without the n

Electronic Waste Low-Temperature Processing: An Alternative Thermochemical Pretreatment to Improve Component Separation.

The production of electronic waste due to technological development, economic growth and increasing population has been rising fast, pushing for solutions before the environmental pressure achieves unprecedented levels. Recently, it was observed that many extractive metallurgy alternatives had been considered to recover value from this type of waste. Regarding pyrometallurgy, little is known about the low-temperature processing applied before fragmentation and subsequent component separation. Therefore, the present manuscript studies such alternative based on scanning electron microscopy chara

Operating conditions for the continuous bioremediation of free cyanide contaminated wastewater using Aspergillus awamori.

Generation of cyanide-containing wastewater is a growing problem worldwide as numerous cyanide complexes are highly unstable and degrade to form free cyanide (F-CN), the most toxic form of cyanide. Agro-waste materials, such as sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) waste from the citrus industry, are rich in readily metabolisable carbohydrates that can supplement microbial activity and thus support biodegradation of toxic compounds in wastewater. This study reports on optimal operating conditions for the continuous biodegradation of F-CN in wastewater using an Aspergillus awamori isolate in a process

High-Performance Electrocatalysts of Potassium Lactate Oxidation for Hydrogen and Solid Potassium Acetate Production.

With the increasing use of polylactic acid (PLA), more attention is turning to its post-treatment. Current methods such as natural decomposition, composting, and incineration are limited by significant carbon dioxide emissions and resource waste. Here, an efficient electrocatalytic conversion approach is presented to transform PLA waste into high-value chemicals, particularly potassium acetate (AA-K). By combining experimental and theoretical calculation, a high-performance catalyst Ni(Co)OOH is developed, which exhibits a current density of 403 mA cm⁻2 at 1.40 V (vs RHE) with 96% Faraday effi

Recycling Zn Casing Waste into a ZnO-Cu-Based Electrocatalyst for Selective CO2 Electroreduction to Ethylene.

The fabrication of a nanostructured electrocatalyst was derived from zinc-carbon (Zn-C) battery waste for the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2RR). The zinc casing was converted into zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods via hydrothermal oxidation and decorated with Cu2O and CuO nanoparticles (NPs) using drop casting to form a ZnO-CuI,II casing electrocatalyst. Electrochemical CO2RR was conducted via chronoamperometric electrolysis at potentials from -1.70 to 0.00 V. The ZnO-CuI,II casing electrocatalyst exhibited selective formation of ethylene (C2H4) with a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 5.6

Efficient recovery of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus from waste activated sludge.

Carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus need to be recovered to reduce the environmental impact of waste activated sludge (WAS). In this study the improved short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production from WAS by the addition of kitchen waste to adjust the ratio of carbon to nitrogen (C/N), and the efficient recovery of nitrogen and phosphorus from the fermentation liquid were reported. Firstly, the optimum conditions for SCFA production were found to be pH 8, temperature 35 °C, C/N ratio 21 mg-C/1 mg-N, and fermentation time 6 d, using the response surface methodology. After alkaline fermentation, the s

Implications in the production of defossilized methanol: A study on carbon sources.

The transition of the current fossil based chemical industry to a carbon-neutral industry can be done by the substitution of fossil carbon for defossilized carbon in the production of base chemicals. Methanol is one of the seven base chemicals, which could be used to produce other base chemicals (light olefins and aromatics). In this research, we evaluated the synthesis of methanol based on defossilized carbon sources (maize, waste biomass, direct air capture of CO2 (DAC), and CO2 from the cement industry) by considering carbon source availability, energy, water, and land demand. This evaluati
