The Role of Rapid Automatized Naming in Children with Developmental Dysgraphia in German.

Various researchers have identified naming speed (rapid automatized naming [RAN]) as a predictor for reading skills and dyslexia. Although fewer studies investigate the connection between RAN and writing acquisition, their results suggest a connection between alphanumeric RAN tasks and spelling skills. Since the cognitive processes relevant to RAN have not yet been researched, it is unclear which components connect spelling performance and naming speed. Various authors propose a connection through orthographic and visual knowledge. This study investigated whether and how alphanumeric (letters …

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Vocabulary Interventions for Deaf/Hard of Hearing Children and Adolescents.

PURPOSE: The development of vocabulary size in deaf/hard of hearing (DHH) children and adolescents can be delayed compared to their peers due to lack of access to early language input. Complementary vocabulary interventions are reported in the literature. Our aim is to evaluate the effectiveness of intervention methods for their vocabulary improvement. METHOD: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, we searched five databases for peer-reviewed journal articles in English, published between 2000 and 2022 (inclusive), reporting vocabulary int

Morpheme-based Reading and Spelling in Italian Children with Developmental Dyslexia and Dysorthography.

Italian sixth graders, with and without dyslexia, read pseudowords and low-frequency words that include high-frequency morphemes better than stimuli not including any morpheme. The present study assessed whether morphemes affect (1) younger children, with and without dyslexia; (2) spelling as well as reading; and (3) words with low-frequency morphemes. Two groups of third graders (16 children with dyslexia and dysorthography and 16 age-matched typically developing children) read aloud and spelt to dictation pseudowords and words. Pseudowords included (1) root + suffix in not existing combinati

Phonological processing deficits as a universal model for dyslexia: evidence from different orthographies.

PURPOSE: To verify the universal nature of the phonological processing deficit hypothesis for dyslexia, since the most influential studies o … lored in studies involving several languages. More importantly, we identify studies in all types of writing systems such as ideographic, syllabic and logographic, as well as alphabetic orthography, with different levels of orthography-phonology consistency. CONCLUSION: The phonological processing hypothesis was considered as a valid explanation to dyslex …

Shallow and deep orthographies in Hebrew: the role of vowelization in reading development for unvowelized scripts.

The present study explored the speed, accuracy, and reading comprehension of vowelized versus unvowelized scripts among 126 native Hebrew speaking children in second, fourth, and sixth grades. Findings indicated that second graders read and comprehended vowelized scripts significantly more accurately and more quickly than unvowelized scripts, whereas among fourth and sixth graders reading of unvowelized scripts developed to a greater degree than the reading of vowelized scripts. An analysis of the mediation effect for children's mastery of vowelized reading speed and accuracy on their mastery

[Field notebooks and histologic drawings in the work of Salvador Gil Vernet].

Our work is based on 11 field notebooks with his notes and descriptions of macroscopic and microscopic anatomic preparations. There is also one notebook with several handmade drawings on black lead pencil, reproducing the microscopic anatomy of the bladder neck; there are also five 60 x 40 cm prints with histologic drawings, several histologic preparations, as well as several letter papers with Dr. Salvador's letterhead in his various institutional aspects.

Editor's Commentary.

PURPOSE: While spinal fusion is the standard treatment for symptomatic low-grade spondylolisthesis, evidence on motion-preserving alternatives such as decompression with interlaminar stabilization (D+ILS) remains limited. This study aims to descriptively evaluate clinical and radiological outcomes after D+ILS at L4/L5 under strict inclusion criteria, with a specific focus on dynamic spinal assessment using upright magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: This prospective observational study involved 30 patients with degenerative low-grade spondylolisthesis at L4/L5 treated with D+ILS using

Two cases of deep dyslexia in unilingual hispanophone aphasics.

This paper addresses the interaction between a particular cognitive property inherent to the human brain, i.e., the capacity to learn how to process written information in a manner such that reading words aloud can become a standard aspect of overt behavior, and some of the culture-linked characteristics of the written codes invented by the species. First, the paper reiterates that the Spanish written code is transparent to the point of entailing full graphophonemic conversion, i.e., reading behavior is possible without access to one's memory of written words (to one's "logographic lexicon").

Understanding handwriting difficulties: A comparison of children with and without motor impairment.

The nature of handwriting difficulties have been explored in children with specific developmental disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate the nature of handwriting difficulties in children with dysgraphia, a less studied group who have significant handwriting difficulties in the absence of motor control or cognitive difficulties. The performance of a dysgraphia group aged 8-14 years was compared to a group with Developmental Coordination Disorder and to typically developing (TD) controls. Participants completed two handwriting tasks on a digitizing writing tablet. The amount and ac…

A new therapeutic proposal for writer's cramp: a case report.

CONTEXT: Writer's cramp is a kind of focal hand dystonia that appears when individuals are writing. Since pharmacological treatment has not shown the desired therapeutic response, a study on immobilization of the damaged musculature was performed on two individuals with writer's cramp, using splints with the objective of reducing the handwriting abnormalities. CASE REPORT: Two patients presenting writer's cramp who had previously undergone different therapies, including botulinum toxin, without an adequate response, participated in a body awareness program, followed by immobilization of the h…

Long-term effects of preterm birth on language and literacy at eight years.

The aims of this study were to investigate whether specific linguistic difficulties in preterm children persist at eight years and to examine the interrelationships between language and literacy in this population, compared with a control group of full-term children. Sixty-eight monolingual Italian preterms and 26 chronologically matched controls were recruited. Language (grammar comprehension, lexical production and phonological awareness), literacy (reading comprehension, reading and writing) and general cognitive development were investigated. Results showed no general delay in preterms, bu…

Thinking about social situations: the moderated effects of imposing structure.

Previous research indicates that people with social anxiety disorder tend to experience escalating distress when thinking about past social situations. We investigated whether such distress could be limited by either an intervention or the participant's pre-existing abilities. Participants were 38 undergraduate students who reported problematic levels of social anxiety. Participants who endorsed a poor ability to purposefully engage with thoughts about stressful social situations reported a deterioration of mood after 25 min of unstructured writing about a recent problematic social situation, …

The selective impairment of the phonological output buffer: evidence from a Chinese patient.

We present a Chinese-speaking patient, SJ, who makes phonological errors across all tasks involving oral production. Detailed analyses of th … ported cases, SJ's deficits in oral production tasks are not accompanied by a similar impairment of writing performance. We argue that this dissociation is evidence that the phonological output buffer is not involved in writing Chinese words. Furthermore, the majority of SJ's errors occur at the onset of a syllable, indicating that the buffer has a struct …
