This paper analyses the clinical features of 8 patients with post-thrombotic obstruction of the subclavian and axillary veins demonstrated by phlebography. The classic physical signs of swelling of the arm with dilated superficial collateral veins were seen. The causes of thrombotic obstruction are discussed and the precipitating cause in this study was possibly filariasis.

Lymphatic filariasis is a vector-borne infectious disease, most commonly caused by Wuchereria bancrofti, that affects 120 million people. It invades the lymphatic system of humans, who are the definitive hosts. We compared the administration of doxycycline with intensified hygiene measures alone in patients diagnosed with bancroftian filariasis. We searched PubMed, Scopus, and Embase and included 12 randomized controlled trials. A random-effects model was used to calculate the mean difference (MD)/risk ratio (RR) and I2 for heterogeneity. The risk of bias and GRADE evaluated the certainty of e…

Lymphatic filariasis (LF), or elephantiasis, is a neglected tropical disease caused by filarial worms, primarily Wuchereria bancrofti, transmitted through mosquito bites. It often begins in childhood but may not show symptoms until later, leaving many individuals asymptomatic for long periods. LF disrupts the lymphatic system, causing severe swelling in the limbs and genitals, leading to deformities and disabilities. The World Health Organization estimates that around 51 million people are affected globally, with 36 million suffering from chronic conditions like lymphedema and hydrocele. In 20…

Lymphatic filariasis is a debilitating illness with an estimated 50 million cases as of 2018. The majority of cases are caused by the parasitic worm W. bancrofti and additional cases by the worms B. malayi and B. timori. Dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) is an established target in the treatment of cancer, bacterial, and protozoal infections and may be a potential target for drugs targeting parasitic worm infections, including filariasis. Recent studies have shown that known antifolate compounds, including methotrexate, inhibit the activity of W. bancrofti DHFR (WbDHFR). However, the absence of s

A female child hailing from South Asia, India presented with pallor, multiple petechiae and ecchymosis. Based on the clinical picture and demography, the differentials considered were pancytopenia of nutritional origin, acute leukaemia, autoimmune and infective aetiologies. After ruling these out by respective tests, a literature review was done which revealed the possibility of filariasis especially in a patient with eosinophilia which was present in our case. A repeat peripheral blood smear study with a nocturnally drawn sample revealed multiple microfilariae and a diagnosis of filariasis wa

BACKGROUND: Improved drug regimens are needed to accelerate elimination of lymphatic filariasis in Africa. This study determined whether a single co-administered dose of ivermectin plus diethylcarbamazine plus albendazole [IDA] is noninferior to standard 3 annual doses of ivermectin plus albendazole (IA) used in many LF-endemic areas of Africa.
METHODS: Treatment-naive adults with Wuchereria bancrofti microfilaremia in Côte d'Ivoire were randomized to receive a single dose of IDA (n = 43) or 3 annual doses of IA (n = 52) in an open-label, single-blinded trial. The primary endpoint was the pro…

Lymphatic filariasis has been identified as the second leading cause of permanent and long-term disability. This article is an attempt to discuss the disease spatial context in light of current interest in GIS and satellite remote sensing. Field validation of outputs obtained through the application of these technologies in the Nile Delta, Egypt is also summarized.

Lymphatic filariasis has afflicted people in the tropical areas of the world for thousands of years but even up to comparatively recent times it has been poorly understood and its importance under recognised. In the last 2 decades or so there has been a flurry of activity in filariasis research, which has provided new insights into the global problem of filariasis, the pathogenesis of filarial disease, diagnosis and control.

Mouse models of Brugia infection have provided much useful quantitative and qualitative information on the immune response elicited by different life cycle stages of filarial worms. Many parallels exist between the immune response in the mouse and the infected human and in this review we highlight areas of topical interest, including the induction of specific cytokine responses and their role in immunomodulation and protective immunity. These studies have reinforced the concept that different life cycle stages of filarial parasites each have their own mechanism of modulating responses so that

Although living adult Wuchereria bancrofti worms can be detected by ultrasound examination of the scrotal area in approximately 80% of men infected with this filarial parasite, the location of the adult worms in the remaining 20% remains unclear. To determine this, 32 individuals who had W. bancrofti microfilaraemia but no adult worms detectable on ultrasound were treated with diethylcarbarmazine (DEC), either with a single 6 mg/kg dose (n = 13) or with a 12-day course of 6 mg/kg per day (n = 19). They were then monitored with serial physical and ultrasound examinations. Thirteen (41%) subject…

A longitudinal study was conducted to explore transmission dynamics and epidemic trend of bancroftian filariasis in Huayuan Village, Shengli Township, Tancheng County, Shandong Province, a previous highly endemic area of it, from 1984, the fifth year after its preliminary eradication, to 1993, without any control measures being taken. Results showed proportions of residents with microfilaremia decreased to 0.12% in 1993 from 0.56% before the study. Eight of the nine microfilaria carriers before the study became negative spontaneously. Six new microfilaria carriers were detected during the stud

OBJECTIVE: To review the cytologic findings in 34 cases of lymphatic filariasis reported on fine needle aspiration cytology for the identification of various parasitic structures.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study of consecutive cytologically diagnosed lymphatic filariasis in a nine-year period.
RESULTS: Thirty-three cases were confirmed as filariasis; 30 had microfilariae (group 1). Three cases (group 2) showed no microfilariae. The diagnosis in group 2 was based on the identification of an adult male worm (1 case), nongravid female worm (1 case) and fertilized eggs (1 case). Thirteen cases

The paper reports the density of Culex quinquefasciatus, infection and infectivity rates, microfilariae(mf)- density and microfilaraemic persons in the colliery and non-colliery areas of Burdwan district, West Bengal. The numbers C. quinquefasciatus were significantly higher in colliery areas, as compared to non-colliery areas. The infection rate and infectivity rates of the vector were found to be higher in colliery areas. The higher vector density in colliery area is one of the major reasons of higher prevalence of filariasis in that area. However, other environmental factors like exposure o
