Widespread use of anticoagulant rodenticides in agricultural and urban environments. A menace to the viability of the endangered Bonelli's eagle (Aquila fasciata) populations.

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are one of the most toxic groups of compounds currently used worldwide for rodent pest control. Toxic baits are often, directly or indirectly, ingested by non-target animals, resulting in secondary poisoning and frequently affecting apex predators. Their presence in many species of raptors is quite common, particularly scavenger species, with some of these acting as sentinels for the presence of these substances in the environment. However, there is less data on the presence of ARs in Bonelli's eagle, one of the most endangered eagle species in Spain and which

Anticoagulant rodenticide exposure and toxicosis in bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) and golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) in the United States.

Raptors, including eagles, are geographically widespread and sit atop the food chain, thereby serving an important role in maintaining ecosystem balance. After facing population declines associated with exposure to organochlorine insecticides such as dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) have recovered from the brink of extinction. However, both bald and golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) are exposed to a variety of other toxic compounds in the environment that could have population impacts. Few studies have focused on anticoagulant rodenticide (AR) expos

Comparative biological properties of the four stereoisomers of difethialone, a second-generation anticoagulant rodenticide, in rats: development of a model allowing to choose the appropriate stereoisomeric ratio.

The current management of rodent pest populations is based on second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGAR). These molecules, of which difethialone is part, are much more efficient than the first generation. Nevertheless, this efficiency comes with a major drawback, SGARs are tissue persistent that increases the exposure of rodent predators to them. According to its chemical structure, difethialone has four stereoisomers, whose specific inhibition potency and pharmacokinetic have never been described and might be useful to design new eco-friendly rodenticides. The study aimed to investig

Bad weed: synthetic cannabinoid-associated coagulopathy.

Recent multistate outbreaks of coagulopathy caused by brodifacoum-tainted synthetic cannabinoids or "fake weed" highlight the public health impact of long-acting anticoagulant rodenticides (LAARs). Patients presenting with this syndrome have had recent exposure to synthetic cannabinoids, evidence of isolated vitamin K antagonism with or without bleeding, and detectable levels of brodifacoum and other LAARs in circulation. This article will provide information on synthetic cannabinoids, LAARs, and coagulopathic manifestations arising from use of adulterated synthetic cannabinoids and their mana

Management of intentional superwarfarin poisoning with long-term vitamin K and brodifacoum levels.

CONTEXT: Brodifacoum is a widely available superwarfarin used as a commercial rodenticide. Toxicity from long-acting anticoagulant rodenticides, primarily from uncontrolled bleeding, has been reported. Very little published toxicokinetic data are available for human brodifacoum poisoning. Management is also contentious with uncertainty over the dose, frequency, and duration of antidote treatment with vitamin K. The role of brodifacoum levels in guiding management is not entirely established. METHODS: A novel, highly sensitive method was developed for measuring all commercially available roden

Thymic cystic degeneration, pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia, and hemorrhage in a dog with brodifacoum toxicosis.

Thymic cysts with pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia are described in a 7-month-old female American Eskimo Dog that died of complications from brodifacoum poisoning. Grossly, there was hemothorax with marked cranial mediastinal hemorrhage. Histologically, thymic lobules were expanded and distorted by irregular cysts, lined by single to multiple layers of plump to slightly attenuated polygonal squamous epithelial cells supported by a basement membrane (pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia). The thymus had a paucity of lymphocytes and lacked corticomedullary differentiation. Extensive hemorrhage wit

[Impact of biochemisty on the duration of treatment for pulmonary embolus].

Can the biochemical evidence for "new thrombophilic factors" influence the duration of AVK treatment following the occurrence of a first pulmonary embolus? Certainly for the classic but very rare antithrombin defects as well as for the existence of circulating anticoagulant. Possibly for protein C and S defects. On the other hand, the existence of a heterozygotic "Leiden" mutation of factor V, or factor II, and an increase of factors VIII, IX, or XI, do not at present warrant a change in AVK prescription. In effect, in the case where the existence of a thrombogenic state implies a prolongation

[Hypersensitivity and resistance to antivitamins K].

During the initial phase or during treatment with oral anticoagulants, hypersensitivity or resistance may be observed, requiring significant changes in prescribed dosage. A thorough knowledge of the mode of action of vitamin K and its antagonists is useful to improve understanding of unexpected response to oral anticoagulant therapy. These abnormal responses may be due to poor compliance to treatment by the patient, insufficient or excessive vitamin K intake, interference with other drugs or abnormalities of the hepatic enzymes which are the target of oral anticoagulant drugs. The search for a

Coumafuryl (Fumarin) toxicity in chicks.

Coumafuryl (Fumarin) toxicity was diagnosed in chickens less than 1 week of age. Mortality rate was 100%. Necropsy showed crops and gizzards to be full of feed. There was diffuse hemorrhage and unclotted blood in the abdomen and thorax. Histological examination showed congestion and hemorrhage. Chemical analysis of crop and gizzard contents contained approximately 340 ppm coumafuryl. The source of the coumafuryl was found to be the wood-straw mats in the chick boxes.

Screening for coumatetralyl in soft drinks by solid-matrix extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection.

A method was developed for the rapid determination coumatetralyl in cola- and orange-type soft drinks, which includes extraction using solid-matrix column, clean-up by silica cartridge chromatography and reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection. The recovery of coumatetralyl from 50 ml of soft drinks was better than 80% at spiking levels down to 50 micrograms/kg (ppb).

Laboratory tests of seven rodenticides for the control of Meriones shawi.

The response of Meriones shawi to seven rodenticides was investigated in laboratory feeding tests. The species proved to be much less susceptible to anticoagulants than most other species of rodent pests. Brodifacoum (at 0.005%), although giving complete mortality after only 8 days' continuous feeding, was more toxic than warfarin (0.025%), coumatetralyl (0.0375%), difenacoum (0.005%) and bromadiolone (0.005%). Calciferol (0.1%), though toxic, was significantly unpalatable. Zinc phosphide (5.0%) presented for 2 days in a choice test against unpoisoned food gave 80% mortality and appears to be

Trials of the anticoagulant rodenticides bromadiolone and difenacoum against the house mouse (Mus musculus L.).

Laboratory and field trials were conducted to determine the efficacy of the anticoagulant rodenticide bromadiolone against the house mouse (Mus musculus). In laboratory feeding tests, family groups of warfarin-resistant mice maintained in pens and conditioned to feeding on plain foods were offered pinhead oatmeal bait containing bromadiolone at 0.005%. Overall mortality in replicated 21-day poison treatments was 55/58 or 94.8%. Six field trials were carried out, using the same poison bait, against mice infesting farm buildings. Treatment success, estimated from the results of census baitings c

Laboratory evaluation of bromadiolone as a rodenticide for use against warfarin-resistant and non-resistant rats and mice.

Laboratory feeding tests were carried out to determine the efficacy of the anticoagulant rodenticide bromadiolone against Rattus norvegicus, R. rattus and Mus musculus. Using 0.005% bromadiolone, complete kills of R. norvegicus and R. rattus not resistant to warfarin were obtained after exposure to the poison for 1 and 5 days respectively. Warfarin-resistant R. norvegicus were all killed in 4 days, and resistant M. musculus in 12 days. In general, the results resembled those obtained with difenacoum. Acceptance of bromadiolone was very good.

Field trials of brodifacoum (WBA 8119) against the house mouse (Mus musculus L.).

The anticoagulant rodenticide brodifacoum was tested against house mice (Mus musculus L.) infesting farm buildings. In six trials, treatment success was assessed from the results of census baitings conducted before and after treatment. With 0.005% brodifacoum in canary seed/corn oil bait, the control achieved ranged between 92.7% and 100%, mean 98.8%. Two mouse populations were eradicated in 3 to 4 weeks but a few individuals survived each of the other four treatments which lasted 6 weeks. The effectiveness of brodifacoum against mice is compared with that of 0.1% calciferol and 0.025% warfari

Laboratory evaluation of WBA 8119 as a rodenticide for use against warfarin-resistant and non-resistant rats and mice.

Feeding tests were carried out in the laboratory to evaluate WBA 8119 as a potential new rodenticide against wild common rats (Rattus norvegicus), ship rats (R. rattus) and house mice (Mus musculus). The results obtained are compared with data previously obtained for difenacoum, another member of the same series of 4-hydroxycoumarin anticoagulants. With warfarin-resistnat and non-resistant common rats, complete kills were obtained using a concentration of 0-0005% for 2 days, or 0-001% for 1 day: a 1-day test at 0-0005% killed 6 out of 10 and 17 out of 20 of the two types respectively.
