In a prospective population-based investigation, we measured bone mineral density (BMD) of the forearm using single-photon absorptiometry at both a distal and a more proximal site in 74 Colles'-fracture patients who were compared with controls matched for age, sex, and years after menopause. Bone mineral content of different areas of the skeleton was measured by dual photon absorptiometry in 20 children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) and compared to 20 age and sex matched healthy children. Serum, red cell, urinary and bone Mg levels have been measured in 10 post-menopausal osteoporotics. Osteoporosis was confirmed by clinical fracture, histological analysis and dual-photon absorptiometry quantification.
