Synergistic nanogel therapy for dry and nutrient-deficient wounds: biotin-loaded acacia-alginate hydrogel enhances tissue regeneration and reduces inflammation.

Dry, nutrient-poor wounds often heal slowly because inflammation persists and tissue repair is impaired. This study developed a biotin-loaded acacia-alginate nanogel (BOT-ACC-SA) to improve biotin's poor water solubility, limited skin penetration, and therapeutic performance in wound healing. Biotin was first adsorbed onto acacia gum and then incorporated into sodium alginate nanogels using sonication-assisted self-assembly. The formulation was thoroughly characterized by thermal, spectroscopic, crystallographic, microscopic, particle-size, and rheological analyses. The optimized nanogel showe…

Nanogel therapy for chronic and post-surgical wounds: a bioengineered Lactoferrin-Acacia-Alginate system enhancing tissue regeneration and inflammatory resolution.

Chronic and post-surgical wounds often exhibit poor angiogenesis, persistent inflammation, and delayed tissue remodeling. Lactoferrin (LAC), a multifunctional glycoprotein with immunomodulatory and healing properties, faces challenges like low solubility and enzymatic degradation that limit its therapeutic use. This study developed a topical nanogel system incorporating LAC, acacia gum (ACC), and sodium alginate (SA) to improve stability, local delivery, and wound healing efficacy. A LAC-ACC complex was formed through adsorption and embedded into SA-based nanogels (Formulations A-C), with Form…

A systematic review of the health effects of Acacia, Eucalyptus, and Pinus wood dust: Implications for South African occupational exposure limits.

South Africa's commercially planted timber is mainly from the non-native genera Acacia (acacia), Eucalyptus (eucalyptus), and Pinus (pine). These trees are popular because they are fast-growing, stress-tolerant, and commercially profitable. During timber processing, woodworkers can be exposed to wood dust through inhalation or dermal contact. Occupational exposure limits (OELs) have been developed to help protect workers against adverse health effects from overexposure to wood dust. In South Africa, the Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Agents of 2021 (RHCA 2021) list an inhalable OEL-maximum…

Comparative prebiotic potential of galacto- and fructo-oligosaccharides, native inulin, and acacia gum in Kenyan infant gut microbiota during iron supplementation.

Iron fortification to prevent anemia in African infants increases colonic iron levels, favoring the growth of enteropathogens. The use of prebiotics may be an effective strategy to reduce these detrimental effects. Using the African infant PolyFermS gut model, we compared the effect of the prebiotics short-chain galacto- with long-chain fructo-oligosaccharides (scGOS/lcFOS) and native inulin, and the emerging prebiotic acacia gum, a branched-polysaccharide-protein complex consisting of arabinose and galactose, during iron supplementation on four Kenyan infant gut microbiota.
