BACKGROUND: Conventionally, neural transfer of the spinal accessory nerve to the suprascapular nerve for shoulder abduction in traumatic brachial plexus injury is performed via the anterior approach. However, important advantages of the posterior approach have made it an alternative option, such as the proximity of neural coaptation to the muscle to be reinnervated and negating the effects of a second injury to the suprascapular nerve.
METHODS: Retrospective data was collected from 30 patients with brachial plexus injury who underwent spinal accessory nerve to suprascapular nerve transfer ove

The shoulder pain syndrome is the most frequent complication of lateral cervical neck dissection and may be caused by iatrogenic injury to the spinal accessory nerve, causing pain and functional limitation of the upper limb and of the cervical spine. Interdisciplinary collaboration and early rehabilitation can reduce the consequences of disability and the possible issues that can arise due to inadequate management of the problem.

Injury to the spinal accessory nerve may occur during conservation neck dissection. In supraglottic laryngectomy preservation of the internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve has largely been ignored. Cadaver dissection and diagrams are used to review the surgical anatomy of these two structures. Particularly important are the relationship of the spinal accessory nerve to the sternocleidomastoid muscle, its interaction with the cervical plexus, and its superficial path inferiorly. Landmarks for the identification of the internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve are indicated, and t

Injury to the accessory nerve results in an obvious shoulder droop, loss of shoulder elevation, and pain. Prevention of inadvertent injury to the accessory nerve is critical in neck dissection. No previous study, however, anatomically demonstrates the mechanism of the spinal accessory nerve traction injury. Anatomic determination of the location and course of the spinal accessory nerve may be helpful for a better understanding of the mechanism of the nerve injury. The accessory nerve courses obliquely across the posterior triangle on the surface of the levator scapula muscle and reaches the tr

We report an unusual case of spinal accessory nerve palsy sustained while transporting climbing gear. Spinal accessory nerve injury is commonly a result of iatrogenic surgical trauma during lymph node excision. This particular nerve is less frequently injured by blunt trauma. The case reported here results from compression of the spinal accessory nerve for a sustained period-that is, carrying a load over the shoulder using a single nylon rope for 2.5 hours. This highlights the importance of using proper load-carrying equipment to distribute weight over a greater surface area to avoid nerve com

Trapezius muscle palsy after accessory nerve injury leads to periscapular pain and shoulder motion deficit. The results of accessory nerve repair generally are good, but surgery is difficult. The difficulty consists of finding the nerve stumps that are embedded in fat and scar tissue from previous surgeries or injuries. Five patients with accessory nerve lesions had surgery and grafting of the accessory nerve. We dissected the proximal stump of the accessory nerve within the fibers of the sternocleidomastoid muscle and in the vicinity of the greater auricular nerve. To achieve dissection of th

OBJECTIVE: Nerve transfers are an alternative in the reconstruction of traumatic brachial plexus injuries. In this study, we report the results of branchial plexus reconstruction using accessory to suprascapular nerve transfer.
METHODS: Thirty-three patients with traumatic brachial plexus injuries underwent surgical reconstruction with accessory to suprascapular nerve transfers. The patients were divided into groups in which surgery was performed either within 6 months after the injury or more than 6 months after the injury. Results were assessed using the Constant score.
RESULTS: There was

Injury to the spinal accessory nerve (SAN) is most commonly of iatrogenic or traumatic origin. The incidence of SAN palsy resulting specifically from lymph node compression is difficult to ascertain, as such cases are typically reported in association with malignancies or following surgical procedures. We report the case of an adolescent who presented with clinical features consistent with SAN palsy, including spontaneous shoulder asymmetry, in the absence of prior trauma or surgical intervention to the cervical region. Surgical exploration revealed compression of the SAN by enlarged lymph nod

In order to investigate the causes, diagnosis, treatment, outcome and prevention of iatrogenic nerve injury in the neck, 8 cases with iatrogenic nerve injuries were analyzed. Among them, 5 cases were accessory nerve injury, 3 cases were brachial plexus injury. All of the cases were treated by surgical methods, including neurolysis, repair by direct suture, nerve graft and transposition. After 1-3 years follow up the effect was excellent in 2 cases who were accessory nerve injury, good in 5 cases, and poor in 1 case who was brachial plexus injury. It was concluded that high responsibility of su

BACKGROUND: Reports place the frequency of phrenic nerve injury after cardiac operations between 10% and 85%, emphasizing the importance of an accurate anatomic description of the diaphragm's innervating nerves to reduce iatrogenic injury, length of hospitalization, and associated costs. The aim of our study was to explore the anatomic variations of the accessory phrenic nerve and relate these findings to phrenic nerve injury.
METHODS: Eighty adult formalin-fixed cadavers were dissected, resulting in 160 nerve specimens. Fifty nerve specimens were also examined laparoscopically with findings

INTRODUCTION: Symptoms of the shoulder syndrome (SS) and spinal accessory nerve (SAN) impairments are well-known complications to any neck dissections (NDs). Even so, their prevalence is reported with large variations in the literature. Furthermore, marginal mandibular nerve (MMN) injuries are claimed to be underreported. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of SS, SAN and MMN injuries after different types of ND.
METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis included studies reporting SAN and MMN injuries following the three main types of ND. Pooled estimates of th

PURPOSE: Transfer of the accessory nerve to the suprascapular nerve is a common procedure, performed to reestablish shoulder motion in patients with brachial plexus palsy. We propose dissecting both nerves via a distal oblique supraclavicular incision, which can be prolonged up to the scapular notch. The results of the transfer to the suprascapular nerve are compared with those of the combined repair of the suprascapular and axillary nerves.
METHODS: Thirty men between the ages of 18 and 37 years with brachial plexus trauma had reparative surgery within 3 to 10 months of their injuries. In pa

INTRODUCTION: The spinal accessory nerve is the external terminal division of the 11th cranial nerve which passes postero-inferiorly in the neck, innervating the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles. The spinal accessory nerve is often in the field of view of neck ultrasound imaging, however, can be overlooked and underappreciated during sonographic neck imaging and ultrasound-guided lymph node biopsies.
METHOD: A scoping review of the literature was conducted to assess current knowledge regarding sonographic imaging of the spinal accessory nerve. The authors' sonographic experience and
