Laura Veschetti works in the field of microbial genomics and adaptation. In this mSphere of Influence article, she reflects on how the work of Marvig et al. on within-host evolution of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, together with long-term evolution experiments by Lenski and colleagues, reshaped her understanding of microbial identity by framing variability as a defining biological feature rather than an exception. Drawing on concepts from population genomics, pangenomics, and regulatory heterogeneity, she discusses how focusing on evolutionary processes rather than static reference genomes has influ

Tumor cells face chronic genotoxic, metabolic, hypoxic, and immune stress that shapes their evolution. While stress-response molecular pathways are well characterized, cancer biology lacks a predictive framework for how cells select among alternative adaptive strategies and how these selections interact to produce tumor-level behavior. We propose that evolutionary game theory, previously applied to cooperation in cancer, should be extended to position stress adaptation itself as the organizing principle of tumor evolution. In this framework, stress-adaptive strategies constitute frequency-depe

Traits that allow more efficient foraging for a deficient resource could increase the competitiveness of a species in resource-poor habitats. Considering the metal-nutrient mobilization ability of many allelochemicals, it is hypothesized that, along with the reported toxic effect on the neighbors, these compounds could be directly involved in resource acquisition by the allelopathic plant. Using nutrient manipulation treatments in hydroponic culture, this hypothesis was tested using Centaurea diffusa, an invasive species that produces the putative phytotoxin 8-hydroxyquinoline (8HQ). The exuda

Mirror neurons may be a genetic adaptation for social interaction. Alternatively, the associative hypothesis proposes that the development of mirror neurons is driven by sensorimotor learning, and that, given suitable experience, mirror neurons will respond to any stimulus. This hypothesis was tested using fMRI adaptation to index populations of cells with mirror properties. After sensorimotor training, where geometric shapes were paired with hand actions, BOLD response was measured while human participants experienced runs of events in which shape observation alternated with action execution

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Drug resistance in tuberculosis remains one of the major challenges to global disease control. Traditionally, its emergence has been attributed to factors such as treatment interruption, poor adherence, and the selective pressure exerted by antimicrobial agents. However, recent advances in bacterial genetics, within-host evolution, cellular persistence, and heteroresistance suggest that relevant biological processes may develop before treatment initiation. The aim of this critical integrative reflection was to explore the biological plausibility that diagnostic delay may

Transitioning between disparate environments presents new physical challenges, and metamorphosis can provide solutions. The life cycles of most amphibians involve an aquatic-to-terrestrial transition and concomitant metamorphosis, but shifts in developmental timing (heterochrony) have also produced a wide variety of aquatic-only and terrestrial-only forms. Thyroid hormone (TH) signalling can govern the timing of tissue transformation and may be a key mechanism behind the relationship between development and diversification of some metamorphic traits. Here, we show that life cycle mode and cave

Throughout the Cenozoic, the fitness benefits of the scrotum in placental mammals presumably outweighed the fitness costs through damage, yet a definitive hypothesis for its evolution remains elusive. Here, I present an hypothesis (Endothermic Pulses Hypothesis) which argues that the evolution of the scrotum was driven by Cenozoic pulses in endothermy, that is, increases in normothermic body temperature, which occurred in Boreotheria (rodents, primates, lagomorphs, carnivores, bats, lipotyphylans and ungulates) in response to factors such as cursoriality and climate adaptation. The model argue

During mating, male bed bugs (Cimicidae) pierce the female abdomen to inject sperm using their needle-like genitalia. Females evolved specialized paragenital organs (the spermalege and associated structures) to receive traumatically injected ejaculates. In Leptocimex duplicatus, the spermalege is duplicated, but the evolutionary significance of this is unclear. In Cimex hemipterus and C. lectularius, in which females normally develop a single spermalege on the right side of the abdomen, similar duplication sometimes occurs. Using these aberrant morphs (D-females) of C. hemipterus, we tested th

Much of the gnathostome (jawed vertebrate) evolutionary radiation was dependent on the ability to sense and interpret the environment and subsequently act upon this information through utilization of a specialized mode of feeding involving the jaws. While the gnathostome skull, reflective of the vertebrate baüplan, typically is bilaterally symmetric with right (dextral) and left (sinistral) halves essentially representing mirror images along the midline, both adaptive and abnormal asymmetries have appeared. Herein we provide a basic primer on studies of the asymmetric development of the gnatho

Yersinia pestis is the causative agent of plague, causing three human plague pandemics in history. Comparative and evolutionary genomics of Y. pestis are extensively discussed in this review. Understanding the genomic variability and the adaptive evolution of Y. pestis from the genomic point of view will contribute greatly to plague detection, identification, control and prevention.

The Baldwin effect is an important theoretical mechanism in evolutionary theory in which beneficial mutations follow the adoption of new behavioral adaptations in animals. This model has not been applied to fungi and other microorganisms because they cannot transmit behavioral routines between individuals within a population before they are encoded genetically. Nevertheless, a version of the Baldwin effect may drive the evolutionary trajectories of the fungi when individual mycelia make choices as they grow and branch in different directions. Through these displays of phenotypic plasticity or

Rapid adaptive evolution can increase the competitive ability of invasive species in their non-native ranges. However, whether this increase is a general response and what drives it remain uncertain because the evidence is largely based on studies with limited sampling, inadequate consideration of population co-ancestry, and oversimplified estimates of competitive ability. We conduct a large-scale glasshouse experiment testing the effects of competition and drought on 100 native and 165 non-native populations of Erigeron canadensis, all genotyped to account for co-ancestry. Plants from non-nat

The evolution of semi-independent modules is hypothesized to underlie the functional diversification of serially repeating (metameric) structures. The mammal vertebral column is a classic example of a metameric structure that is both modular, with well-defined morphological regions, and functionally differentiated. How the evolution of regions is related to their functional differentiation in the forerunners of mammals remains unclear. Here we gathered morphometric and biomechanical data on the presacral vertebrae of two extant species that bracket the synapsid-mammal transition and use the re

A number of putative adaptations for bipedalism have been identified in the hominin spine. However, it is possible that some have been overlooked because only a few studies have used 3D and these studies have focused on cervical vertebrae. With this in mind, we used geometric morphometric techniques to compare the 3D shapes of three thoracic and two lumbar vertebrae of Homo sapiens, Pan troglodytes, Gorilla gorilla, and Pongo pygmaeus. The study had two goals. One was to confirm the existence of traits previously reported to distinguish the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae of H. sapiens from thos

In a predator-prey system where both intervenients come from the same taxon, one can expect a strong selection on behavioural and morphological traits involved in prey capture. For example, in specialised snake-eating snakes, the predator is unaffetced by the venom of the prey. We predicted that similar adaptations should have evolved in spider-eating (araneophagous) spiders. We investigated potential and actual prey of two Palpimanus spiders (P. gibbulus, P. orientalis) to support the prediction that these are araneophagous predators. Specific behavioural adaptations were investigated using a

The larva of the tortoise beetle, Hemisphaerota cyanea (Chrysomelidae, Cassidinae), constructs a thatch from long filamentous fecal strands, beneath which it is totally concealed. The thatch is not discarded at molting but is enlarged by addition of strands as the larva grows. Thatch construction begins when the larva hatches from the egg. Pupation occurs beneath the thatch. Two predators, a coccinellid beetle larva (Cycloneda sanguinea) and a pentatomid bug (Stiretrus anchorago), were shown to be thwarted by the thatch. However, one predator, a carabid beetle (Calleida viridipennis), feeds on

Evolution in response to a change in ecology often coincides with various morphological, physiological, and behavioral traits. For most organisms little is known about the genetic and functional relationship between evolutionarily derived traits, representing a critical gap in our understanding of adaptation. The Mexican tetra, Astyanax mexicanus, consists of largely independent populations of fish that inhabit at least 30 caves in Northeast Mexico, and a surface fish population, that inhabit the rivers of Mexico and Southern Texas. The recent application of molecular genetic approaches combin

The extent to which species can adapt to spatiotemporal climatic variation in their native and introduced ranges remains unresolved. To address this, we examined how clines in cyanogenesis (hydrogen cyanide [HCN] production-an antiherbivore defense associated with decreased tolerance to freezing) have shifted in response to climatic variation in space and time over a 60-year period in both the native and introduced ranges of Trifolium repens. HCN production is a polymorphic trait controlled by variation at two Mendelian loci (Ac and Li). Using phenotypic assays, we estimated within-population

Cartilaginous fish are located at a pivotal point in phylogeny where the adaptive immune system begins to resemble that of other, more-derived jawed vertebrates, including mammals. For this reason, sharks and other cartilaginous fish are ideal models for studying the natural history of immunity. Insights from such studies may include distinguishing the (evolutionarily conserved) fundamental aspects of adaptive immunity from the (more recent) accessory. Some lymphoid tissues of sharks, including the thymus and spleen, resemble those of mammals in both appearance and function. The cartilaginous
