[Effects of cyaninoside chloride and Heleniene on mesopic and scotopic vision in myopia and night blindness].

A controlled, clinical trial, comparing cyaninoside chloride and Heleniene , was conducted on 31 out-patients suffering from functional disturbances of vision in low-luminance conditions. The evolution of photopic and mesopic visual acuities, electro- oculograms and adapto -electroretinograms was assessed for both treatment groups and controls. Both agents significantly improved photopic visual acuity (p less than 0.05). Only cyaninoside chloride treatment improved visual functions related to mesopic and scotopic vision (p less than 0.01). There were also significant differences between the tw

The Effect of Prism Adaptation on the Angle of Deviation in Convergence Excess Esotropia and Possible Consequences for Surgical Planning.

UNLABELLED: Convergence excess esotropia describes a heterophoria with binocular single vision (BSV) on distance viewing that becomes esotropic on accommodation upon near fixation. Prism adaptation test (PAT) is a procedure routinely used to reveal the maximum angle of deviation preoperatively for many types of strabismus and has been shown to improve surgical outcomes; however, it is not conventionally used for convergence excess esotropia. AIM: This study compares the angle of deviation at 1/3 m and 6 m before and after prism adaptation in subjects with convergence excess esotropia to deter

Adaptation to Progressive Additive Lenses: Potential Factors to Consider.

People develop presbyopia as part of the normal aging process. Most presbyopes adapt to progressive additive lens (PALs), while others do not. This investigation sought to determine whether the ability to modify disparity vergence or phoria was correlated to PALs adaptation. In experiment 1, a double-step paradigm quantified the ability to modify convergence responses in sixteen presbyopes. In experiment 2, thirty-one incipient presbyopes participated in a 5-minute sustained fixation task to evoke phoria adaptation where the magnitude and rate of phoria adaptation were measured. Then, the expe

Vergence adaptation in children and its clinical significance.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Vergence adaptation has not been well investigated in children even though it may contribute to binocular dysfunction and near work induced asthenopia. METHODS: We compared vergence adaptation in 18 children and 18 young adult subjects by assessing tonic vergence (TV) before and immediately after a period of sustained near fixation, by measuring heterophoria with a synoptophore through 0.5 mm binocular pinholes. Adaptation was induced by a reading task at 15 cm for a continuous 5 minute period. RESULTS: Mean pre-task TV values of 0.70 MA (Meter Angles) and 0.20 MA wer

The effect of monovision lenses on the near-point range of single binocular vision.

Monovision (MV) contact lenses are commonly used to provide optical correction for presbyopia. Based on their review of the literature on fusional mechanisms, Erickson and Schor predicted that monocular blur associated with MV should not be sufficient to disrupt binocular fusion. We found that fusional vergence ranges in presbyopes corrected with MV were not substantially different from those measured under full binocular nearpoint correction. There were small but statistically significant tendencies for the phoria and base-in vergences to be less exo under MV conditions. Comparisons of findin

Changes in the contrast sensitivity of an amblyopic eye after losing the other normal eye.

A man aged 17 had an amblyopic left eye with central fixation and lost his normal right eye by an accident. After the accident, spontaneous improvement of the visual acuity of the amblyopic left eye was rapid. Just after the accident, overall contrast sensitivity of the left eye was considerably less than that of a normal adult. Improvement of the contrast sensitivity was recorded first at low spatial frequencies and then at high spatial frequencies. However, the contrast sensitivity at medium spatial frequencies remained less than that of a normal adult. These results suggest that lateral inh

Freely moving pupillometry and awake vestibular recordings capture acute vestibular-autonomic signatures of motion sickness in mice.

Motion sickness (MS) in rodents is commonly inferred from behavioral and autonomic readouts, but objective measures capturing ocular and vestibular involvement remain limited. Here we implemented a multimodal framework combining freely moving pupillometry, awake vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), awake ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMPs), and behavioral assays to characterize MS-like responses in mice. We further applied vestibular habituation training (VHT) to test whether these endpoints track adaptive recovery. Rotational stimulation induced a reproducible MS-like phenotype, i

Refractive and visual function changes in twilight conditions.

PURPOSE: We investigated the effect of luminance on refraction and visual function under twilight conditions. METHODS: Twenty young adults (mean age 20.5 ± 0.5 years) without ocular diseases and 20 eyes were included in the study. Subjective and objective spherical equivalent power (SE), logMAR, pupil diameter, ocular aberration, and ocular axial length were evaluated. Measurements were conducted in a light room with high luminance (300 cd/m2) targets (photopic), in a dark room with low luminance (10 cd/m2) targets (twilight), and a dark room after 15 min of adaptation to low luminance (10 cd

Relation between vertical facial asymmetry and postural changes of the spine and ancillary muscles.

Some patients presenting with head tilt maintain binocular vision by the adaptation of the spinal position. It is suggested that in cases of hyper eye facial asymmetry, where one eye is positioned higher than the other, the head will tilt to equalize the ocular heights in order to maintain binocularity during concentrated visual tasks. This phenomenon is a subdivision of ocular torticollis. The continuous head tilt causes adaptations by the spine and its ancillary muscles. Early treatment by small vertical prisms can alleviate stress discomfort and prevent it in the future.

Effects of a vitamin-A-free diet on tissue vitamin A concentration and dark adaptation of aging rats.

Changes in serum, hepatic, and ocular vitamin A levels were followed in 9-month-old Long Evans rats fed either a vitamin-A-free or vitamin-A-sufficient diet for up to 18 months. After 18 months, hepatic total vitamin A fell exponentially from 2542 +/- 433 to 48 +/- 12 micrograms/g wet weight, but these stores maintained normal serum retinol and ocular total vitamin A concentrations in vitamin-A-deprived rats. However, retinal dark-adaptation time, a functional indicator of photoreceptor integrity, was prolonged in elderly vitamin-A-deprived rats as compared to vitamin-A-sufficient controls (p

Multidisciplinary rehabilitation and eye tracker-assisted communication in locked-in syndrome: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Locked-in syndrome (LIS) is a rare and severe neurological condition characterized by quadriplegia and anarthria with preserved consciousness. Communication impairment is a major barrier to psychosocial adaptation and long-term rehabilitation. A new rehabilitation strategy is needed to restore multi-sensory impairments. CASE PRESENTATION: A patient underwent eye tracker therapy as part of a comprehensive multidisciplinary rehabilitation program following the diagnosis of LIS, which aimed to improve ocular scanning and gaze patterns to enable the patient to communicate using ocular

Adaptive model of the aging emmetropic eye and its changes with accommodation.

A general schematic model of the optical system of the emmetropic human eye is proposed, capable of adapting to changes with age and accommodation through adjustment of the optical surfaces and the internal gradient index structure of the lens. The specific models of the cornea and lens consist of minor generalizations of previous work by assuming them to be the sum of a biconic plus three higher order Zernike modes. The internal gradient index distribution adapts to the external shape so that the analytical expression is invariant with the changes with age and accommodation. The model also in

Light, literacy and the absence of ultraviolet radiation in the development of myopia.

As the prevalence of myopia steadily increases, reaching as high as 90% in some populations, investigators continue to look for causative factors other than family history. Most current research suggests an association of axial myopia with reading or either the presence or absence of light. Even though these studies are frequently inconsistent, non-reproducible or contradictory, many clinicians utilize them in recommending treatments for children, such as bifocals or atropine. By reviewing the biologic effects of non-ionizing electromagnetic fields, we may gain insight into these discrepancies

Fixation of disparity: a steady state error of disparity-induced vergence.

Fusional vergence eye movements are controlled by a fast-acting mechanism that aligns the eyes in response to retinal image disparity and a slow-acting mechanism that sustains binocular alignment. These two control mechanisms are distinguished by their decay time constants and stimuli. Fast fusional vergence responds to retinal image disparity, and slow fusional vergence responds to the effort or output of the fast control mechanism. Fixation disparity is modeled as a steady-state error of fast fusional vergence. Fixation disparity is shown to be inversely related to prism adaptation, a manife

Physiologic indicators of vitamin A status.

Physiologic indicators reflect the functional consequences of vitamin A deficiency and may be particularly useful for detecting early perturbations in vitamin A status. In conjunctival impression cytology (CIC), epithelial morphology and the presence or absence of mucin spots and goblet cells allow samples, obtained by applying filter paper to the temporal conjunctiva, to be characterized as normal or typical of vitamin A-deficient keratinizing metaplasia. The validity of CIC has been established with reference to other indicators of vitamin A status, and a prevalence of > or =20% abnormal res
