Stress responses and Physiological Changes of Salmonella enterica Serovar Enteritidis on Short-Term and Long-Term Benzalkonium Bromide Adaptation.

Salmonella enterica is a common foodborne pathogen that poses significant safety risks across the world. And benzalkonium bromide (BK) is widely used as a disinfectant to sterilize the food processing equipment. It has been reported that sub-lethal concentration of disinfectants induced not only the homologous resistance but also cross-resistances. This work analyzed the induced resistances of Salmonella Enteritidis by short-term adaptation (STA) and long-term adaptation (LTA) to BK. We have demonstrated that inefficient sterilization exposes Salmonella Enteritidis to sub-lethal concentrations

Effects of short term forced oral breathing: physiological changes and structural adaptation of diaphragm and orofacial muscles in rats.

OBJECTIVE: We studied adaptation of diaphragm and orofacial muscles as well as hormonal responses to forced oral breathing (lasting for only 4 days) following reversible bilateral nasal obstruction performed on day 8 post-natal male rats. DESIGN: Muscle myosin heavy chain (MHC) composition and hormone levels were analysed during two periods: 1 and 3 days after obstruction (days 9 and 11 post-natal), and following 3 months recovery with nasal breathing (90 days, adult). RESULTS: Diaphragm muscle showed significant increases in adult isoforms (MHC 1, 2a) in oral breathing group versus control.

Physiological and Proteomic Analyses Reveal the Adaptive Mechanisms of Maize Genotypes Under Potassium Deficiency.

Potassium (K) deficiency severely constrains maize productivity, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying genotypic differences in K tolerance remain poorly understood. A comparative physiological and iTRAQ-based quantitative proteomic analysis was conducted on two maize inbred lines with contrasting K-deficiency tolerance (Ktm, tolerant; Ksm, sensitive) following 3 days of K starvation (0 mM K), using roots as the primary analytical target. Physiological assessments revealed that under K deficiency, Ktm exhibited higher root vitality (Ktm decreased by 16.65% vs. Ksm by 31.54%) and larger root

Cadmium exposure triggers adaptive physiological and molecular responses that undermine development in Bactrocera dorsalis.

The oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Diptera: Tephritidae), an important invasive fruit and vegetable pest, exhibits a broad host range that includes citrus, mango, and banana. Its larvae bore into fruit tissues, causing severe economic losses. Cadmium (Cd²⁺) is classified among the most toxic heavy metal contaminants, capable of accumulating in plants and biomagnifying through food chains, thereby threatening biodiversity and human health. This study assessed the effects of Cd²⁺ stress on B. dorsalis larval growth and development, alongside changes in key enzymatic activities and tran

Autoregulated macro-microcycle training enhances physiological reserve and adaptability in competitive speed skaters.

BACKGROUND: The personalization of training is one of the main pillars of performance science, but multidomain reserve modelling based on aerobic, neuromuscular, and autonomic systems remains under-researched. Unlike fixed-load models, the approach uses real-time heart rate variability (HRV) and performance load ratio (PLR) feedback to tune training and recovery, offering a new, evidence-based approach to maintaining the adaptive potential of speed skating. This study tested whether an autoregulated macro–microcycle using readiness signals improves physiological reserve versus volume-matched c

Molecular regulation of reversible cardiac remodeling: lessons from species with extreme physiological adaptations.

Some vertebrates evolved to have a remarkable capacity for anatomical and physiological plasticity in response to environmental challenges. One example of such plasticity can be found in the ambush-hunting snakes of the genus Python, which exhibit reversible cardiac growth with feeding. The predation strategy employed by pythons is associated with months-long fasts that are arrested by ingestion of large prey. Consequently, digestion compels a dramatic increase in metabolic rate and hypertrophy of multiple organs, including the heart. In this Review, we summarize the post-prandial cardiac adap

Transcriptional and physiological adaptations in nucleus accumbens somatostatin interneurons that regulate behavioral responses to cocaine.

The role of somatostatin interneurons in nucleus accumbens (NAc), a key brain reward region, remains poorly understood due to the fact that these cells account for < 1% of NAc neurons. Here, we use optogenetics, electrophysiology, and RNA-sequencing to characterize the transcriptome and functioning of NAc somatostatin interneurons after repeated exposure to cocaine. We find that the activity of somatostatin interneurons regulates behavioral responses to cocaine, with repeated cocaine reducing the excitability of these neurons. Repeated cocaine also induces transcriptome-wide changes in gene ex

Immuno-physiological adaptations confer wax moth Galleria mellonella resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis.

Microevolutionary mechanisms of resistance to a bacterial pathogen were explored in a population of the Greater wax moth, Galleria mellonella, selected for an 8.8-fold increased resistance against the entomopathogenic bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) compared with a non-selected (suspectible) line. Defense strategies of the resistant and susceptible insect lines were compared to uncover mechanisms underpinning resistance, and the possible cost of those survival strategies. In the uninfected state, resistant insects exhibited enhanced basal expression of genes related to regeneration and a

Dietary instead of pharmacological management to counter the adverse effects of physiological adaptations to space flight.

The development of pharmacological counter-measures to the adverse effects of physiological adaptation to microgravity has received relatively more attention than alternatives such as dietary management. The manipulation of dietary cation-anion balance, and its subsequent effects on acid-base metabolism, have been routinely used for some time in managing domestic animal health. More recently, dietary intake by humans of alkalinizing potassium salts has been demonstrated to exert profound beneficial effects on calcium balance, bone mineralization, predisposition to calcium oxalate nephrolithias

Physiological Differences Underlying Divergent Hypoxia Responses and Altitude Adaptations in Humans, Rats and Mice.

Hypobaric hypoxia, a defining feature of high-altitude environments, poses a considerable physiological challenge to both humans and rodents. To withstand hypoxic stress, mammals have developed cellular and systemic adaptations that not only safeguard against acute and future episodes of oxygen deprivation but may also enhance overall resilience and functional capacity. A central aim of current research is to harness these health-promoting effects of hypoxic exposure as a therapeutic strategy for a range of medical conditions. To date, much of the evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of

Skin temperature adapted physiological strain index (aPSI) predicts exertional heat illness.

Objective.Exertional heat illness (EHI) remains a challenge for those that exercise in hot and humid environments. Physiological status monitoring is an attractive method for assessing EHI risk and a critical component of recommended layered risk management approaches. While there is consensus that some combination of core body temperature, mean skin temperature, heart rate, and hydration provide an indication of heat strain, a field-feasible metric that correlates to EHI incidence has not been identified.Approach.We present a comparison of five practicable heat strain indices (skin temperatur

The involvement of sympathetic nervous system in essence of chicken-facilitated physiological adaption and circadian resetting.

AIM: The impact of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) on the regulation of circadian rhythm and physiological functions is still not clear. Previous studies have found that essence of chicken (EC) supplementation facilitated the physiological adaption and circadian resetting in rats subjected to jet lag. Herein, the effects of SNS on the circadian clock and the hypothesis that EC-induced acceleration of circadian resetting is dependent on the SNS are investigated. MAIN METHODS: Male Wistar rats with superior cervical ganglionectomy (SCGx) were used to investigate the role of the SNS in circ

Role of thermal physiology and bioenergetics on adaptation in tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri): the experiment test.

Ambient conditions, as temperature and photoperiod, play a key role in animals' physiology and behaviors. To test the hypothesis that the maximum thermal physiological and bioenergetics tolerances are induced by extreme environments in Tupaia belangeri. We integrated the acclimatized and acclimated data in several physiological, hormonal, and biochemical markers of thermogenic capacity and bioenergetics in T. belangeri. Results showed that T. belangeri increased body mass, thermogenesis capacity, protein contents and cytochrome c oxidase (COX) activity of liver and brown adipose tissue in wint

Cortical response to psycho-physiological changes in auto-adaptive robot assisted gait training.

Robot-assisted treadmill training improves motor function and walking ability in neurologically impaired patients. However, despite attention having been shown to play a role in training success, psychological responsiveness to task difficulty and motivational levels at task onset have not been measured. Seven healthy subjects participated in a robot-assist treadmill training task. Subjects engaged in a virtual task with varying difficulty levels that was shown to induce a feeling of being bored, excited and over-stressed. The participants' mental engagement was measured using the ECG-based he

Unravelling the grey zone: submaximal-to-peak stress echocardiography enhances diagnostic accuracy in differentiating early dilated cardiomyopathy from physiological adaptation.

BACKGROUND: Participation in regular endurance exercise may be associated with physiological left ventricular (LV) dilatation and concomitant low resting LV ejection fraction (LVEF), a phenotype indistinguishable from early dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) on resting imaging alone and termed the "grey zone". Stress echocardiography has emerged as a potential arbiter and has been proposed to resolve this dilemma. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of stress echocardiography in distinguishing physiological from pathological LV dilatation and assessed whether incorporating submaximal-t
