Injectable Asymmetric Adhesive-Antifouling Bifunctional Hydrogel for Peritoneal Adhesion Prevention.

Peritoneal adhesion is a common problem after abdominal surgery and can lead to various medical problems. In response to the lack of in situ retention and pro-wound healing properties of existing anti-adhesion barriers, this work reports an injectable adhesive-antifouling bifunctional hydrogel (AAB-hydrogel). This AAB-hydrogel can be constructed by "two-step" injection. The tissue adhesive hydrogel based on gallic acid-modified chitosan and aldehyde-modified dextran is prepared as the bottom hydrogel (B-hydrogel) by Schiff base reaction. The aldehyde-modified zwitterionic dextran/carboxymethyl

[Application of anti-adhesive barrier for recurrent acute adhesive intestinal obstruction].

Surgical treatment of a patient with recurrent acute adhesive intestinal obstruction is described. Seven plates of anti-adhesive barrier agent made from oxidized regenerated cellulose were applied to small bowel in order to prevent adhesions. Control examination did not reveal viscero-parietal adhesions between hollow organs and delayed passage through the gastrointestinal tract. Long-term results indicate the need for intraoperative prevention of intra-abdominal adhesions in patients with abdominal adhesive disease.

Coacervation of Interfacial Adhesive Proteins for Initial Mussel Adhesion to a Wet Surface.

Coacervation of mussel adhesive proteins (MAPs) is proposed as a potential strategy that mussels may use during secretion due to their high concentration density, lack of dispersion into seawater, and low interfacial tension. Particularly, coacervations of interfacial MAPs, foot protein type-3 fast variant (fp-3F) and type-5 (fp-5), are important in the initial mussel adhesion process due to the relationship between the easy secretion/surface wetting properties of the coacervate and primer-like surface adhesive role of interfacial MAPs, which directly contact the marine surface. To the best of

Inhibition of Focal Adhesion Kinase on Hepatic Stellate-cell Adhesion and Migration.

OBJECTIVE: Hepatic fibrosis is characterized by the activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). Focal adhesion kinase (FAK)-phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) signals participate in the activation of HSCs. We evaluated the effect of FAK-related nonkinase (FRNK) on the adhesion and migration of HSCs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Hepatic fibrosis was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats by means of bile duct ligation. Livers were harvested at 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks after the ligation; livers of sham-operated animals were harvested at 4 weeks after ligation. Histopathologic features were evaluated in liver

Adhesive small bowel adhesions obstruction: Evolutions in diagnosis, management and prevention.

Intra-abdominal adhesions following abdominal surgery represent a major unsolved problem. They are the first cause of small bowel obstruction. Diagnosis is based on clinical evaluation, water-soluble contrast follow-through and computed tomography scan. For patients presenting no signs of strangulation, peritonitis or severe intestinal impairment there is good evidence to support non-operative management. Open surgery is the preferred method for the surgical treatment of adhesive small bowel obstruction, in case of suspected strangulation or after failed conservative management, but laparoscop

Effect of time between adhesive application and photoactivation on adhesion and collagen exposure.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the influence of the time elapsed between the application and photoactivation of Single Bond 2 (SB) on microtensile bond strength (μTBS) and collagen exposure at the adhesive interface produced in the presence of intrapulp pressure. METHODS: Dentin occlusal surfaces were prepared in 72 molars, and divided into eight groups (n = 9). After acid etching, SB was applied, with or without simulated intrapulp pressure, and remained undisturbed for 0, 20, 40 or 60 seconds, before photoactivation. Three teeth/group were processed for staining with Goldner trichrome and evaluation

The involvement of adhesion molecules and lipid mediators in the adhesion of human platelets to eosinophils.

Platelet-leukocyte interactions represent an important determinant of the inflammatory response. Although mechanisms of platelet-neutrophil adhesion were studied extensively, little is known on the mechanisms of platelet-eosinophil interactions. The aim of the present study was to analyze the involvement of adhesion molecules and lipid mediators in platelet-eosinophil adhesion as compared to platelet-neutrophil adhesion. For that purpose human platelets, eosinophils and neutrophils were isolated and platelet-eosinophil and platelet-neutrophil adhesion induced by thrombin (30 mU/ml), LPS (0.01

Effect of the adhesive layer thickness on the fracture toughness of dental adhesive resins.

We investigated how the thickness of an adhesive layer between two Co-Cr alloy plates affected the mode I fracture toughness of dental adhesive resin by varying the type of resin using a double cantilever beam (DCB) test. Two typical adhesive resins (PV and SB) were used. The adhesive layers of the DCB test specimens were 20, 100 and 200 microns thick. The fracture modes of PV differed with the thickness of the adhesive layer, such as interface fracture at 20 microns thickness, and similar cohesive fracture at 100 and 200 microns thickness. In the case of SB, crack-propagating areas were obser

Adhesion controversies: pelvic pain as a cause of adhesions, crystalloids in preventing them.

OBJECTIVE: To review the clinical data that specifically address the contribution of pelvic adhesive disease to pelvic pain and the use of intraperitoneal crystalloid instillants in the prevention of postoperative pelvic adhesions. STUDY DESIGN: A review of contemporary reports that describe relevant clinical studies. RESULTS: The data on adhesions and pelvic pain suggest that adhesions can cause pelvic pain and that adhesiolysis relieves pain in 60-90% of cases. Adhesions in patients with pelvic pain are associated with restricted motion or expansibility of organs, whereas adhesions in pati

Comparison of adhesiveness between new improved surgical drapes and existing drapes during contraceptive surgery in 90 cats: a multi-center controlled clinical trial.

Plastic drapes are used prevent surgical site infections by enclosing bacteria within adhesive layers that directly contact the skin during surgery. However, these drapes often peel from the surgical edge, increasing the risk of surgical site infection. This problem has remained unresolved since the development of plastic drapes decades ago. Recently, a basic study using rat skin reported improvements in the structure of these drapes. This study indicated that drape detachment during skin incision can be suppressed by improving the flexibility of the drape base film. Furthermore, although the

The combination of the SH metabolite of erdosteine (a mucoactive drug) and ciprofloxacin increases the inhibition of bacterial adhesiveness achieved by ciprofloxacin alone.

Exposure to ciprofloxacin and other fluoroquinolone antibiotics at less than minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) reduces the production of some of the factors that contribute to bacterial virulence, particularly bacterial adhesiveness. Once metabolized, erdosteine (a mucoactive drug) produces an active metabolite (Met I) with a reducing sulfhydryl group that is capable of opening the disulfide bonds present in tracheobronchial mucins and pilins, a protein of bacterial fimbriae (adhesins). This induces stereoconformational changes that interfere with the binding of bacterial adhesins to th…

Differential modulation of cell adhesion by interaction between adhesive and counter-adhesive proteins: characterization of the binding of vitronectin to osteonectin (BM40, SPARC).

Heparin-binding forms of vitronectin, a multifunctional adhesive glycoprotein, are associated with the extracellular matrix (ECM) at different locations in the body and serve to promote cell adhesion and the regulation of pericellular proteolysis at sites of angiogenesis. In the present study we characterized the interactions of vitronectin with the counter-adhesive protein osteonectin (also termed SPARC or BM40). Osteonectin and vitronectin were both found associated with the ECM of cultured endothelial cells and were localized in vessel wall sections of kidney tissue. In vitro, the heparin-b

Adhesive Capsulitis of the Shoulder.

Adhesive capsulitis is characterized by limited range of motion (ROM) due to adhesions within the glenohumeral joint capsule. The pathophysiology is suspected to involve an inflammatory reaction progressing to fibrotic contracture. Active fibroblastic proliferation can be found on histologic analysis, with some transformation to myofibroblasts, ultimately creating collagen in the form of a thick band. Clinically, adhesive capsulitis is classified into phases: freezing, frozen, and thawing. Risk factors include diabetes, hyperthyroidism, prior fractures, shoulder and cervical spine surgery, and

Nanostructured Medical Adhesives.

Suturing has been the gold standard approach to close wounds for many decades. However, suturing causes tissue damage, which is accompanied by foreign body reaction, entry of pathogens, complications, infection, or death. In addition, the procedure is usually time-consuming, requiring manual dexterity and free moving space. Other adhesive approaches have been proposed and demonstrated with great potential, including laser-assisted tissue closure with either photothermal or photochemical reactions, application of nanoparticles, glues, constructs based on extracellular matrix (ECM), microbarbs,

Adhesion molecules in keratinocytes.

Adhesion molecules are proteins on the cell surface that are involved in the interactions between lymphocytes and antigen-presenting cells, especially in inflammatory skin diseases and autoimmune bullous disorders. Adhesion molecules include cadherins (subgroups E, N, P, M), integrins, selectins, and the immunoglobulin gene family. Cadherins E in the epidermis including desmocollin 1 and 2 and desmoglein 1 and 3 are essential transmembrane components of desmosome glycoproteins, which play a major role in bullous diseases, pemphigus in particular. Also important are integrin beta 1 alpha 1 and

Tissue adhesives in otorhinolaryngology.

A widespread network of respiratory-related neurons within the brainstem controls the regular respiratory cycle, which is dependent upon unspecific and specific drives like hypoxia or hypercapnia. This respiratory network and its respiratory drives are subjects to typical changes during the transition from wakefulness to sleep and within the various sleep states, which favor a destabilization of breathing during sleep. There is also a respiratory-related innervation of the dilating and stiffening pharyngeal muscles as well as a local reflex control of the basic tone of upper airway muscles, bo
