A parametric approach to measuring cerebral blood flow autoregulation from spontaneous variations in blood pressure.

Autoregulation maintains cerebral blood flow (CBF) almost constant in the face of changes in arterial blood pressure (ABP). Tests for impairment of this process using only spontaneous fluctuations in ABP, without provoking large variations, are of great clinical interest, and a range of different approaches have previously been applied. Extending earlier work based on linear filters, we propose a simple parametric method using a first order finite impulse response filter. We evaluate the method on ABP and CBF velocity [(CBFV), from trancranial Doppler ultrasound] signals collected in 60 patien

An in vitro study of the effectiveness of carbon dioxide flushing of arterial line filters.

Gaseous microemboli (GMEs) have been connected to neurologic impairment and other ischemic complications after surgery. The components of the extracorporeal circuit (ECC) have a large influence on GME production. This in vitro study investigates the use of carbon dioxide flushing of the 38-microm Medtronic Affinity CB351 and 38-microm Medtronic Affinity 351 arterial line filters (ALFs) to decrease GMEs and time for air to clear the ALE An adult circuit was implemented with a silicone oxygenator for vacuum-assisted gas removal and to reduce air before ALE The 48 filters were separated into four

Retrospective on the Introduction of Particle Filters to Eliminate Emissions of Nanoparticles from Engine Exhaust Gas.

The particle filter for most diesels and some petrol categories is now state of the art. The worldwide population is estimated to be >250 million vehicles with filters. The nanoparticle concentration in ambient air is thus reduced in Switzerland to one third of the status of 2005 and worldwide premature deaths by traffic related ambient air is reduced by >2 million cases annually. This success story started in 1995 when SUVA, the Swiss occupation health authority, had to guarantee safety and health in the world's largest railway transalpine tunnelling system, NEAT, scheduled to be built from t

Multistage S-Scheme Heterojunction-Modified Polylactic Acid Nanofiber Membrane: Enhancing Long-Term Stability and Achieving Synergistic Purification of Multiple Indoor Air Pollutants.

Indoor air pollution caused by particulate matter, VOCs, and pathogenic microorganisms has become more and more serious. The use of numerous petroleum-based polymer filters also causes environmental pollution. Therefore, it is urgent to develop green, degradable, and long-term-stable indoor air filters with synergistic purification of multiple pollutants. Polylactic acid nonwovens are considered candidates for the next generation of air filters because of their green and degradable properties. Herein, we developed a multistage S-scheme heterojunction (Ag3PO4/MXene/Bi2WO6, AMB)-modified PLA ele…

Forced-air warming blowers: An evaluation of filtration adequacy and airborne contamination emissions in the operating room.

BACKGROUND: Forced-air warming (FAW) is widely used to prevent hypothermia during surgical procedures. The airflow from these blowers is often vented near the operative site and should be free of contaminants to minimize the risk of surgical site infection. Popular FAW blowers contain a 0.2-μm rated intake filter to reduce these risks. However, there is little evidence that the efficiency of the intake filter is adequate to prevent airborne contamination emissions or protect the internal air path from microbial contamination buildup. METHODS: Five new intake filters were obtained directly fro

Reusable Filters Augmented with Heating Microfibers for Antibacterial and Antiviral Sterilization.

Numerous threats to human health and ecosystems on earth exist due to air pollution and the spread of fatal diseases. Airborne pollutants and particulate matter (PM) pose serious public health risks. In addition, the emergence and spread of bacterial and viral diseases constantly threaten public health and safety. Although various approaches have been implemented thus far to protect humans from air pollution and exposure to diseases, several challenges remain to be addressed. In this study, we developed a hybrid air filter consisting of filtration, heating, and thermal insulation layers. The a

A new approach to assess occupational exposure to airborne fungal contamination and mycotoxins of forklift drivers in waste sorting facilities.

The waste management industry is an important employer, and exposure of waste-handling workers to microorganisms is considered an occupational health problem. Besides fungal contamination, it is important to consider the co-occurrence of mycotoxins in this setting. Forklifts with closed cabinet and air conditioner are commonly used in waste industry to transport waste and other products within the facilities, possibly increasing the risk of exposure under certain conditions. The aim of this study was to assess the fungal contamination and mycotoxin levels in filters from the air conditioning s

Self-activating air filtration device for aerosol control during luminal instruments drying in the sterile processing department.

BACKGROUND: Luminal instruments are characterized by their slender internal lumens, which make them particularly challenging to clean and dry. A common drying method used by Sterile Processing Department (SPD) technicians involves blowing high-pressure air into one end of the lumen to expel moisture. However, this process generates a significant amount of aerosols that may contain bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms. These aerosols can increase the microbial load in the SPD environment, leading to secondary contamination of other medical devices and posing health risks to SPD staff. Cu

Evaporative coolers and wildfire smoke exposure: a climate justice issue in hot, dry regions.

Low-income families in dry regions, including in the Southwestern United States, frequently cool their homes with evaporative ("swamp") cool … that it brings in dust and air pollution. Participants were highly satisfied with air cleaners and air filters that were offered to them free-of-charge. However, a willingness to pay analysis showed that air filtration solutions would not be adopted without significant subsidies; furthermore, air filtration would be an ongoing cost to participants due to the …

Ethyl cellulose/gelatin/β-cyclodextrin/curcumin nanofibrous membrane with antibacterial and formaldehyde adsorbable capabilities for lightweight and high-performance air filtration.

Functionalization of bio-based nanofibers is the development tendency of high-performance air filter. However, the conventional structural optimization strategy based on high solution conductivity greatly hinders the development of fully bio-based air filter, and not conducive to sustainable development. This work fabricated fully bio-based nanofibrous membrane with formaldehyde-adsorbable and antibacterial capabilities by electrospinning low-conductivity solution for high-performance air filtration and applied to lightweight mask. The "water-like" ethyl cellulose (EC) was selected as the base

The detection of Coccidioides from ambient air in Phoenix, Arizona: Evidence of uneven distribution and seasonality.

Coccidioidomycosis is a debilitating fungal disease caused by inhalation of arthroconidia. We developed a novel approach for detection of airborne Coccidioides and used it to investigate the distribution of arthroconidia across the Phoenix, Arizona, metropolitan area. Air filters were collected daily from 21 stationary air-sampling units across the area: the first set collected before, during and after a large dust storm on August 25, 2015, and the second over the 45-day period September 25-November 8, 2016. Analysis of DNA extracted from the filters demonstrated that the day of the dust storm…

Efficiency of portable air purification on public buses: A pilot study.

High concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) have been frequently reported in public transit systems and can cause adverse health effect. The portable air purifier is an inexpensive solution that could potentially clean in-cabin PM2.5. This study aims to find the PM2.5 removal efficiency of portable air purifiers in a public transit bus. In various scenarios, after artificially preloading the in-cabin PM2.5 concentration to 400 μg/m3, the concentrations were measured every 10 s, with and without the intervention of air purifiers. In a test bus with a volume of approximately 62.5 m3,

Fabrication of sodium alginate nanofibrous membranes with bead-on-string structure for effective air filtration.

Airborne dust particles carrying pathogens threaten public health, driving demand for eco-friendly air filters. While sodium alginate (SA) offers sustainability advantages over petroleum-based nanofibers, its conventional smooth, densely packed membranes suffer from limited performance. Inspired by biological micro/nanostructures, we engineered bead-on-string SA nanofibers via green electrospinning. Rheological tests and SEM characterization revealed the mechanism of bead-on-string formation. The morphology transformation of SA fibers from smooth to bead-on-string structures was systematically…
