Mental health in Alberta grain farmers using pesticides over many years.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to organophosphates and certain other pesticides has been related to symptoms of mental ill-health. There is particular interest in whether exposure over many years may result in chronic ill-health. AIMS: To relate lifetime history of pesticide exposure to symptoms and medical records of mental ill-health in elderly grain farmers in Alberta. METHODS: Two populations of grain farmers were identified for study: cohort A (n = 5986), members of an Alberta farm organization in 1983; cohort B (n = 4781), grain farmers registered with the provincial department of agriculture. I…

Modeling soil acidification in the Athabasca Oil Sands region, Alberta, Canada.

Industrial activities have proliferated across Canada's Athabasca Oil Sands Region in recent years, stimulating concerns over the impact of atmospheric sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions on acid-sensitive terrain. Upland jack pine forests have been identified as possibly the most sensitive ecosystem in the region but despite high emissions of SO2, sulfur (S) deposition is relatively low across much of the region. The response of forest soils at 11 locations that exhibit low estimated weathering rates (< 10 mmol(c) x m(-2) x yr(-1)) was simulated for the period 1900-2100 using a dynamic hydrogeoche

Post-maternity outcomes following health care reform in Alberta: 1992-1996.

OBJECTIVE: The effect of Alberta's health reform on length of stay for maternity cases and on subsequent mothers' rehospitalization was examined in the present study. METHODS: The data set included all Alberta acute care hospital separation records from 1991/92 to 1996/97 inclusive. A logistic regression was applied to the data in order to examine the effects of prepartum condition, type of delivery, length of stay, maternal age, and year on the likelihood of readmission. RESULTS: Health reform proved to be associated with a dramatic decrease in length of stay for maternity cases; from 3.8 t…

Mycobacteriosis in yellow perch (Perca flavescens) from two lakes in Alberta.

Granulomatous skin lesions were identified in a population of yellow perch (Perca flavescens) from Sandy Lake (Alberta, Canada) in 1985. Severe granulomatous peritonitis and hepatitis was identified subsequently in a separate population of yellow perch from Wolf Lake (Alberta, Canada). Mycobacterium chelonae was isolated from affected fish in both epizootics. The source and route of infection were not determined in either case. The nature of the inflammatory reaction in both cases suggested a depressed immunity.

Invasive Enterovirus and Parechovirus Infections in Adults, Alberta, Canada, 2023-2025.

We conducted a retrospective, population-based laboratory surveillance study during May 2023-December 2025 in Alberta, Canada, to characterize adult invasive enterovirus and parechovirus infections and to identify groups at high risk for those infections. Of 15,621 samples tested, 162 (1.0%) were virus positive, of which 51 (31.5%) samples from 39 patients indicated invasive infections. Cerebrospinal fluid, blood, and cardiac tissue were the most frequent virus-positive specimens. The invasive enterovirus and parechovirus incidence rate was 0.37 cases/100,000 person-years; rates were higher in…

Microbiology sampling in non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis cases from northern Alberta.

Non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (NCFB) is a chronic respiratory disease resulting in chronic cough, thick sputum, and lower airway microbial colonization, akin to patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). NCFB is a common, yet under recognized entity which inflicts significant morbidity and mortality particularly to older individuals, with a rising prevalence in the developed world. Given that sputum cultures are a non-invasive method to characterize the lower airway microbiota in NCFB patients, for which pathogenic organisms are associated with worsened outcomes, we sought to characterize the mi

Epidemiology of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections in Alberta, Canada.

Most studies of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bloodstream infection (BSI) reflect a convenience sample from a single hospital or a small group of hospitals. From April 2011 to March 2013, cases of MRSA BSI diagnosed in all hospitals in Alberta, Canada were captured prospectively. Isolates were spa typed. In total, there were 299 cases of MRSA BSI, equating to 3.95 cases per 100,000 population. Community-acquired BSI accounted for 66.9% of cases, and 33.1% of cases were hospital acquired. Cases were predominantly seen in tertiary care (36.4%) and large urban hospitals (34.3%…

Risk factors and 10-year breast cancer survival in northern Alberta.

1,121 women in northern Alberta diagnosed as having breast cancer between 1971-74 were followed for 10 years. Risk factors for breast cancer were studied with respect to their possible influence on survival by comparing survival curves, using both Logrank and Cox's regression model, and controlling for intercurrent death, stage and axillary node status. A complex interaction was found between age and menopausal status and survival rates. Premenopausal women aged 45-55 had a better survival rate than postmenopausal women of the same age. However, one subgroup of premenopausal women aged 35-39 h…
