Duration and determinants of delayed diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis in Algeria.

BACKGROUND: Delay in the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis contributes to its transmission and undermines control efforts, however, these delays have not been systematically assessed in Algeria. AIM: To assess the duration and determinants of delay in the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis in Algeria. METHODS: Between June and December 2019, we reviewed paper-based medical records of, and interviewed, 323 adult patients aged ≥ 15 years at 4 tuberculosis facilities in Blida District of Algeria. The participants were newly diagnosed pulmonary TB patients registered under the r…

A Century of Epidemiological Advances in Cutaneous and Visceral Leishmaniasis in Algeria.

Leishmaniasis is a group of diseases transmitted by sandflies, affecting humans and animals, with three clinical presentations: cutaneous, mucosal, and visceral. The disease is caused by the parasite Leishmania and is a significant global health issue, with approximately two million cases annually and 350 million people at risk. The disease is endemic in 98 countries, including Algeria, which is a hotspot. In Algeria, three species of Leishmania (Leishmania major, Leishmania infantum, and Leishmania tropica) cause cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis, with the cutaneous one being highly endemi…

[Edmond Sergent (1876-1969) and the Pasteur Institute of Algeria].

Edmond Sergent, supported by a distinguished team of colleagues, directed the Pasteur Institute of Algeria for over 60 years, from 1900 to 1963. As a student of Emile Roux, Sergent had received a Pasteurian training. His institute devoted extensive study to malaria. Sergent defined the concept of prevention and extended it to other pathologies. For many years, the Institute persevered in carrying out successful antimalarial campaigns such that Algeria was freed of the disease. In 1916-1917, Sergent and his brother were called upon to organise anti-malarial efforts for the Armée d'Orient. By wa…

[Rickettsiosis and chlamydiosis in Hoggar (Republic of Algeria): epidemiological sampling].

The study was made on reservoirs of infections (rodent, sheep, goat, dromedary), vectors (louse) and human-receptors. Examinations were made on smears examined with staining and indirect-fluorescente techniques and on sera examined by complement fixation test. Chlamydia psittaci appears very often in rodent, sheep, goat, dromedary and man. Antibodies against Coxiella burneti were found present in sheep, goat but mainly in dromedary and less than 16 years old boys. Two lice were carrier of Rickettsia prowazeki; Rickettsia mooseri was detected on one louse and one mouse.

[Epidemiology of bacillary dysentery in Algeria. II. The seasonality of dysentery].

Morbidity rises during the period of summer and autumn are characteristic of bacterial dysentery in Algeria. During the last 18 years no essential changes in the seasonal character of bacterial dysentery were observed in the country taken as a whole. However, in different climatic and geographical zones of the country the seasonal character of dysentery greatly varies from one zone to another and essentially differs from the seasonal character of dysentery morbidity, typical of the country as a whole for many years. The most pronounced manifestations of seasonal rises are observed in the Sahar…

High toxoplasmosis seroprevalence among young pregnant women in Medea, Algeria.

Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease with worldwide distribution and a major public health problem. In fact, the zoonotic pathogen Toxoplasma gondii infects humans and almost all warm-blooded animals. One of the most common sources of human T. gondii infection is the ingestion of tissue cysts in raw or undercooked meat. The current epidemiological study was carried out in Medea (Algeria), from January to June 2017, using Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Antibodies against T. gondii were determined in sera of more than one thousand pregnant women. The different age groups were: 15-20,…

[News of antibiotic resistance among Gram-negative bacilli in Algeria].

Antibiotic resistance has become a major public health problem in Algeria. Indeed the past decade, we have seen a significant increase in resistance to antibiotics especially in Gram-negative bacilli. Resistance to β-lactams in enterobacteria is dominated by the production of ESBL CTX-M-3 and CTX-M-15. The strains producing these enzymes are often the cause of potentially serious infections in both hospital and community settings. Identified plasmid cephalosporinases are CMY-2, CMY-12 and DHA-1. The isolation of strains of Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa producing carbapenemases …

Equine cryptosporidial infection associated with Cryptosporidium hedgehog genotype in Algeria.

Faecal samples from two horse farms in Algeria keeping Arabian, Thoroughbred, and Barb horses were examined for the presence of Cryptosporidium in 2010-2011. A total of 138 faecal samples (16 from a farm keeping 50 animals and 122 from a farm with 267 horses) were screened for Cryptosporidium spp. infection using molecular tools. DNA was extracted from all samples. Nested PCR was performed to amplify fragments of the SSU rDNA and gp60 genes to determine the presence of Cryptosporidium species and genotypes. Sequence analyses of SSU and gp60 genes revealed four animals positive for the presence…

Prevalence rate of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in Annaba (Algeria) schoolchildren.

BACKGROUND: We studied the prevalence rate of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) in Annaba schoolchildren. No previous assessment of this syndrome had ever been done in Algeria. METHODS: EIB was evaluated using the 6 min free running test (6MFRT) on 286 children, 87.4% of whom were 10-12 years old. They performed the test in the morning, during the autumn-winter season. Peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) was measured before, and then 5 and 10 min after the 6MFRT, a 15% or more decrease in post-exercise PEFR being defined as significant. RESULTS: EIB was much more frequent in asthmatic …

Chronic childhood spinal muscular atrophies in Algeria. A genetic study.

This paper describes a genetic study of the chronic spinal muscular atrophies of late infancy and early childhood in Algeria. There were 50 index patients occurring in 44 kindreds and fourteen secondary cases. Genetic and nosological studies indicated that 52% of the patients constitute a genetically homogeneous subgroup with an age of onset between 3 and 24 months and an autosomal recessive mode of transmission. They also indicated that a large subgroup of index patients (48%) had a late age of onset, between 3 and 14 years. Such a large number of late presenting cases has not been reported i…
