We examined monocular spatial vision of strabismic amblyopes by measuring errors of relative directionalization (specifying whether or not two targets are in vertical alignment) and partitioning (equating left- and right-field spaces). Abnormally large errors were made when fixation occurred with the amblyopic eye; these errors did not attributable to reduced acuity, unsteady fixation, or eccentric fixation. From the results we infer that monocular space perception of strabismic amblyopic eyes is severely distorted and is characterized by "bending" of vertical lines of direction and by local "

Purpose: To assess the prevalence of alternate etiology/co-existing pathology among patients with amblyopia, and to characterize factors contributing to over-diagnosis of amblyopia. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed records of children (from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2019) who were initially diagnosed as "amblyopia" but later an alternate diagnosis for subnormal vision was established. Patients who had a best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of ≤20/32 (0.2 logMAR) after compliant amblyopia therapy were divided into 2 groups: those with refractory amblyopia (BCVA improvement from baseline …

Introduction Anisometropic amblyopia is a leading cause of preventable monocular visual impairment in children. Traditionally considered a cortical developmental disorder, recent advances in optical coherence tomography (OCT) have demonstrated measurable structural alterations in the retina and choroid of amblyopic eyes. These findings suggest that amblyopia may also involve retinal and choroidal components. Objective To evaluate longitudinal changes in retinal and choroidal thickness following amblyopia therapy in children with unilateral anisometropic amblyopia. Methods This prospective long…

The optimal method of treatment for a child depends on the patient's age at the time of diagnosis, the onset and type of amblyopia, and the degree of compliance attainable. In deprivation amblyopia, the cause of visual impairment (e.g., cataract, ptosis) needs to be treated first, and then the disorder can be treated such as other types of amblyopia. Anisometropic amblyopia needs glasses first. In strabismic amblyopia, conventionally amblyopia should be treated first, and then strabismus corrected. Correction of strabismus will have little if any effect on the amblyopia, although the timing of…

Past research has reported deficits on reaching and grasping tasks in adults with amblyopia and degraded stereoacuity, but less is known about visuomotor deficits in children-specifically, for complex tasks that require movement sequencing. This study therefore compared the visuomotor performance in 21 children with abnormal binocular vision (patient group) due to amblyopia and/or strabismus to that of 236 children with normal binocular vision development (control group) ages 5-14 years. Visual acuity, stereoacuity, and hand-movement kinematics on a bead-threading task were assessed. The patie…

Amblyopia is a common perceptual disorder resulting from abnormal visual input during development. The clinical presentation and visual deficits associated with amblyopia are well characterized. Less is known however, about amblyopia's impact on the central nervous system (CNS). While early insights into the neuropathophysiology of amblyopia have been based on findings from animal models and postmortem human studies, recent advances in noninvasive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques have enabled the study of amblyopia's effects in vivo. We review recent retinal and neuroimaging researc…

Aniseikonia is a difference in the perceived size or shape of images between eyes, and can arise from a variety of physiological, neurologic … rently it is not routinely assessed in most clinical settings. At least two-thirds of patients with amblyopia have anisometropia, thus we may expect aniseikonia to be common in patients with anisometropic amblyopia. However, aniseikonia may not be experienced by the patient under normal binocular viewing conditions if the image from the amblyopic eye is of …

PURPOSE: To compare the macular retinal thickness of moderately to severely amblyopic eyes with non-amblyopic eyes as controls.
METHODS: This case control study was conducted on 56 children aged 4 to 10 years old (64.3% female subjects). Twenty-eight children had unilateral amblyopia (28 amblyopic eyes as cases and 28 normal fellow eyes as internal controls) and 28 children had normal visual acuity in both eyes and were considered as external controls (n = 56 eyes). Among our cases, 14 had strabismic amblyopia and 14 had anisometropic amblyopia. Macular retinal thickness was measured using op…

Amblyopia is the most diffused form of visual function impairment affecting one eye, with a prevalence of 1-5% in the total world population. Amblyopia is usually caused by an early functional imbalance between the two eyes, deriving from anisometropia, strabismus, or congenital cataract, leading to severe deficits in visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and stereopsis. While amblyopia can be efficiently treated in children, it becomes irreversible in adults, as a result of a dramatic decline in visual cortex plasticity which occurs at the end of the critical period (CP) in the primary visual c…

Amblyopia is a cerebral visual impairment considered to derive from abnormal visual experience (e.g., strabismus, anisometropia). Amblyopia, first considered as a monocular disorder, is now often seen as a primarily binocular disorder resulting in more and more studies examining the binocular deficits in the patients. The neural mechanisms of amblyopia are not completely understood even though they have been investigated with electrophysiological recordings in animal models and more recently with neuroimaging techniques in humans. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge about the br…

Over the last 50 years, research into the developmental plasticity of the visual cortex has led to a growing understanding of first the causes and then of the underlying cellular mechanisms of amblyopia or 'lazy eye', the commonest childhood disorder of vision. While it is widely believed that amblyopia cannot be treated successfully after the age of about 7, recent animal studies have demonstrated that visual cortex plasticity can be restored or enhanced later in life, paving the way for new strategies for the treatment of amblyopia that attempt to remove molecular brakes on plasticity. In ad…

PURPOSE: To investigate an association of childhood nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO) with anisometropia and amblyopia.
METHODS: The medical records of patients from newborn to 6 years of age with a diagnosis of NLDO seen from 2000 to 2010 were retrospectively reviewed. Data collected included age at onset of NLDO, laterality of NLDO, cycloplegic refractive error, determination of clinically significant anisometropia (defined as ≥1 D), and diagnosis of amblyopia with amblyopia subtype (anisometropic vs other).
RESULTS: A total of 1,218 patients with NLDO were included. Of these, 887 cases…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence, type and distribution of astigmatism in children with amblyopia.
METHODS: A total of 2023 children with amblyopia (aged 4-11 years, 3657 eyes) were recruited. The prevalence of astigmatism was investigated.
RESULTS: Of the 3657 amblyopic eyes, 91.9% presented astigmatism (≥0.5 D). The proportion of eyes with astigmatism decreased with the increasing age. Compound hyperopic astigmatism was the most common type of astigmatism (38.8%) and its prevalence increased with the increasing age in children with amblyopia. Astigmatism with the rule was the most …

PURPOSE: It is known that information from an amblyopic eye can be strongly suppressed when both eyes are open. The authors investigated the way in which suppression influences the relative perception of suprathreshold contrast and luminance between a person's eyes under dichoptic viewing conditions.
METHODS: Stimuli consisted of four patches of luminance or four patches containing gratings. Two patches were presented to each eye. Ten amblyopes with mild suppression (six strabismic, three anisometropic and strabismic, and one deprivation; mean age, 34.5 years) and three control observers with
