[Transient global amnesia - benign memory blackout].

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a typical clinical syndrome characterized by acute, predominantly anterograde amnesia. New epidemiological data assume a significantly higher annual incidence than previously assumed, namely around 15 cases per 100,000 people. Those affected, usually over the age of 50, cannot remember new memory content for longer than 30-180 seconds and therefore ask repetitive questions about current events. All other cognitive functions are unimpaired, and everything previously learnt, e.g. driving or cooking, can be carried out. The episodes are self-limiting and by defin

Medical Procedure-Related Transient Global Amnesia.

BACKGROUND: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is an interesting clinical syndrome characterized by sudden memory loss for recent events and an inability to retain new memories usually lasting several hours and recovering spontaneously. We conducted a literature search of medical procedure-related TGA and its predisposing conditions. METHODS: We performed PubMed searches using the keyword "transient global amnesia" combined with "procedure," "test," "therapy," or various other individual medical procedures. In addition, we described 2 cases of gastroscopy-related TGA. RESULTS: Eighty-nine patien

Classical diseases revisited: transient global amnesia.

Transient global amnesia usually affects patients between the ages of 40 and 80. Patients with this condition are often described--wrongly--as being confused. It presents classically with an abrupt onset of severe anterograde amnesia. It is usually accompanied by repetitive questioning. The patient does not have any focal neurological symptoms. Patients remain alert, attentive, and cognition is not impaired. However, they are disoriented to time and place. Attacks usually last for 1-8 h but should be less than 24 h. It is possible that it may result from different mechanisms such as venous con

Transient global amnesia after general anesthesia.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is an amnestic syndrome, clinically dramatic but benign in nature. The hallmark of TGA is brief inability to form new memories and recall past memories despite otherwise normal neurological function. In a significant number of patients with TGA a stressful precipitating factor can be identified. We report two cases of TGA after uneventful general anesthesia. Anesthesia per se does not appear to be a direct trigger of TGA, as our first patient had a second anesthetic the next day without recurrence of TGA. Because the presentation of TGA can be dramatic and may mi

[Transcranial Doppler during transient global amnesia].

INTRODUCTION: Transient global amnesia is a syndrome mainly characterised by an anterograde memory deficit, which disappears in less than 24 hours without leaving any kind of sequelae. Its aetiopathogenesis is still unclear. The ischemic theory became important after hypoperfusion was observed in the mesial region of the temporal lobe using different imaging techniques, although recently the use of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging by other authors has not revealed these alterations in the cerebral blood flow. CASE REPORT: We report on a transcranial Doppler study carried out in a

[Transient global amnesia after general anesthesia].

A 61 year old male patient with left mandibular cyst, received marsupialization of the left mandible under general anesthesia. Four hours after the end of anesthesia, his memory for the past 4 months and short term memory plastisity were impaired. No neurological abnormalies were found at that time. On the 2nd postoperative day, he recovered his lost memory for the past 4 months. The memory of events between 6 hours before operation and next morning, however, remained lost. It is suggested that the memory disorder is the TGA due to various causes including transient hypertension, operative str

ED evaluation of transient global amnesia.

Transient global amnesia is an unusual syndrome involving a transient memory loss and inability to form new memories, without affecting other cognitive functions. Although the patient often lacks insight into the problem, the syndrome is very frightening for family members, who frequently present to the ED. The evaluation of the syndrome is the subject of some controversy. This review presents current understanding about the causes of transient global amnesia and an approach to the ED evaluation of the syndrome.

Transient global amnesia and thalamic hemorrhage.

A left rostral thalamic hematoma was found in a 52-year-old hypertensive man who suffered from a 10-h episode of transient global amnesia (TGA). A neuropsychological study revealed no cognitive impairment in a follow-up period for 5 years. The left rostral part of the thalamus appears to be responsible for his TGA, due probably to an interference of the mamillothalamic tract, ventroamygdalofugal pathway or dorsal noradrenergic bundle.

Probable propafenone-induced transient global amnesia.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a probable case of transient global amnesia caused by propafenone. This adverse effect has not been previously described for this agent. CASE SUMMARY: A 61-year old man with a history of sick sinus syndrome with persistent atrial fibrillation and infrequent premature ventricular contractions was admitted to the hospital for symptoms of amnesia and disorientation to time, place, and date. He began taking propafenone only 6 days prior to admission because of uncontrolled atrial fibrillation and symptoms of fatigue. His atrial fibrillation subsequently had converted to nor

[Transient global amnesia--possible aetiopathogenetic mechanisms].

Transient global amnesia is a clinically well defined syndrome, characterized by transient isolated epizodes of confusion with inability to acquire new data, repetitive quieries, retrograde amnesia and absence of other neurologic symptoms or signs. Eighteen patients who presented at admission the clinical picture of transient global amnesia were, after the examination, classified in three groups: patients with symptoms or signs of transitory focal ischemia, migraine group, and miscellaneous group. The transitory global amnesia in patients suffering from atherosclerotic changes of the vascular
