Effects of atrazine on fish, amphibians, and aquatic reptiles: a critical review.

The herbicide atrazine is widely used in agriculture for the production of corn and other crops. Because of its physical and chemical properties, atrazine is found in small concentrations in surface waters--habitats for some species. A number of reports on the effects of atrazine on aquatic vertebrates, mostly amphibians, have been published, yet there is inconsistency in the effects reported, and inconsistency between studies in different laboratories. We have brought the results and conclusions of all of the relevant laboratory and field studies together in this critical review and assessed

Terminology of gonadal anomalies in fish and amphibians resulting from chemical exposures.

Given the recent increase in the number of studies describing the ability of chemicals to exert endocrine-disrupting effects, not only in fish but in a variety of other oviparous groups such as amphibians and reptiles, there is an urgent need to harmonize the terminology currently used in describing pathological changes of the gonads. In addition to difficulties in comparing results from different studies, there is also the risk of miscommunication by using terms that imply a certain clinical relevance which may not be true for the species examined. Especially in the case of the recent and con

Control and interaction of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems in anuran amphibians.

In anuran amphibians, respiratory rhythm is generated within the central nervous system (CNS) and is modulated by chemo- and mechanoreceptors located in the vascular system and within the CNS. The site for central respiratory rhythmogenesis and the role of various neurotransmitters and neuromodulators is described. Ventilatory air flow is generated by a positive pressure, buccal force pump driven by efferent motor output from cranial nerves. The vagus (cranial nerve X) also controls heart rate and pulmocutaneous arterial resistance that, in turn, affect cardiac shunts within the undivided anur

Into the unknown: a literature review of helminths of amphibians and reptiles in Mesoamerica.

BACKGROUND: Helminths are an important but understudied component of amphibian and reptile biodiversity, particularly in Mesoamerica, a global biodiversity and cultural hotspot. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive literature review of helminth parasites reported from amphibians and reptiles across Mesoamerica, yielding 71 publications with 1195 specimen records. Data extracted from each article included geographical location of the report, co-author affiliation and country of origin, host and parasite taxonomic details, deposition in taxonomic collections, and pathological data. In addition

Contribution of pannexin channels to afterimage signals in the amphibian retina.

Pannexin 1 (Panx1) forms large-pore, single-membrane channels that connect the intracellular and extracellular environments, permitting the passage of ions and small molecules, such as ATP. Panx1 channels are involved in diverse signaling pathways that contribute to various physiological processes, including sensory processing, although their precise mechanisms of action remain incompletely understood. This study reveals a Panx1-mediated mechanism regulating visual signal processing in the amphibian retina. Using immunolabeling and confocal imaging, we localized Panx1 channels in the cone-domi

Heat stress and amphibian immunity in a time of climate change.

As a class of vertebrates, amphibians, are at greater risk for declines or extinctions than any other vertebrate group, including birds and mammals. There are many threats, including habitat destruction, invasive species, overuse by humans, toxic chemicals and emerging diseases. Climate change which brings unpredictable temperature changes and rainfall constitutes an additional threat. Survival of amphibians depends on immune defences functioning well under these combined threats. Here, we review the current state of knowledge of how amphibians respond to some natural stressors, including heat

Amphibian toxicity testing for identification of thyroid disrupting chemicals.

Both amphibian metamorphosis assay (AMA) and larval amphibian growth and development assay (LAGDA) can detect thyroid-mediated modality and adversity on the basis of morphological changes during the thyroid hormone-dependent metamorphosis. They are used for identification of thyroid hormone system disrupting chemicals (TDCs) for non-target organisms or the environment. The EU Guidance recommends that the AMA and the LAGDA should be used to address sufficient investigation of the thyroid-mediated modality and adversity, respectively. In the EU discussions over identification of TDCs, the necess

First Case of Brucellosis Caused by an Amphibian-type Brucella.

We report the first case of brucellosis caused by an isolate whose genome is identical that of a frog isolate from Texas, demonstrating the zoonotic potential of amphibian-type Brucella. Importantly, with such atypical Brucella, correct diagnosis cannot be performed using routine serological tests or identification methods.

The amphibian peptide Yodha is virucidal for Zika and dengue viruses.

Zika virus (ZIKV) has emerged as a serious health threat in the Americas and the Caribbean. ZIKV is transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito, sexual contact, and blood transfusion. ZIKV can also be transmitted to the developing fetus in utero, in some cases resulting in spontaneous abortion, fetal brain abnormalities, and microcephaly. In adults, ZIKV infection has been correlated with Guillain-Barre syndrome. Despite the public health threat posed by ZIKV, neither a vaccine nor antiviral drugs for use in humans are currently available. We have identified an amphibian host defense pepti

Human evaluation of amphibian species: a comparison of disgust and beauty.

Animals can evoke a wide range of emotions helping us to choose a quick and appropriate reaction towards them: approach or avoidance in general. This work has focused on disgust evoked by amphibians in humans as well as perceived beauty. Due to the high morphological variability of recent amphibian taxa, we examined humans' cognitive categorisation of 101 amphibian photos and the effect of stimuli characteristics on disgust evaluation or beauty perception of individual groups/species. We also explored how respondents' characteristics, e.g. gender, age and disgust sensitivity (DS-R) influence t

Innervation of amphibian reproductive system. Histological and ultrastructural studies.

In the present study we describe for the first time in anuran amphibians the histological and ultrastructural characteristics of innervation in the female reproductive organs. The observations in Rhinella arenarum revealed the presence of nerve fibers located predominantly in the ovarian hilium and in the oviduct wall. In both organs the nerves fibers are placed near blood vessels and smooth muscles fibers. In the present study the histological observations were confirmed using antibodies against peripherin and neurofilament 200 proteins. Ultrastructural analyses demonstrated that the innervat

Xenopus Bicaudal-C is required for the differentiation of the amphibian pronephros.

The RNA-binding molecule Bicaudal-C regulates embryonic development in Drosophila and Xenopus. Interestingly, mouse mutants of Bicaudal-C do not show early patterning defects, but instead develop polycystic kidney disease (PKD). To further investigate the molecular mechanism of Bicaudal-C in kidney development, we analyzed its function in the developing amphibian pronephros. Bicaudal-C mRNA was present in the epithelial structures of the Xenopus pronephros, the tubules and the duct, but not the glomus. Inhibition of the translation of endogenous Bicaudal-C with antisense morpholino oligomers (

Amphibian ocular malformation associated with frog virus 3.

During an on-going amphibian ecology study, a free-ranging American bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) metamorph was captured in a pitfall trap adjacent to a constructed farm pond at the Plateau Research and Education Center (PREC) on the Cumberland Plateau near Crossville, Tennessee, USA. Grossly, the right eye was approximately 50% the size of the left. Stereo and light microscopic examination revealed two granulomas within the orbit. Electron microscopic examination revealed virus particles scattered throughout one structure but mostly aggregated toward the center. Subsequent PCR and sequencing (G

Cloning and expression of the amphibian homologue of the human PKD1 gene.

PKD1 is the gene responsible for autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) type 1 in humans. The PKD1 gene product is likely to be a calcium channel regulator. In this paper, we describe the isolation and characterization of the Xenopus homologue of the human PKD1 gene. We isolated and cloned genomic fragments corresponding to the amphibian homologue of PKD1 from a BAC library, and after sequencing the clones, we designed primers for the amplification of the transcript and sequenced 10 kb of ORF. The sequence of the putative protein clearly demonstrated that this gene is the homolog

Presence of putative histidine-rich proteins in the amphibian epidermis.

In amphibian epidermis mucus is thought to constitute the matrix material that links keratin filaments present in cells of the corneous layer. As contrast in mammals, and perhaps in all amniotes, histidine-rich proteins form the matrix material. In order to address the study of matrix molecules in the epidermis of the first tetrapods, the amphibians, an autoradiographic and electrophoretic study has been done after administration of tritiated histidine. Histological analysis of amphibian epidermis shows that histidine is taken up in the upper intermediate and replacement layers beneath the cor

Blood pressure control in a larval amphibian, Xenopus laevis.

The regulation of arterial pressure in early vertebrate embryos and larvae with non-innervated hearts is poorly understood. We used nanoliter intravascular injections in anaesthetized Xenopus laevis larvae (stage 49-51) to assess their ability to maintain arterial pressure in the face of a volume load. Injections of saline and hetastarch (a volume expander) were made into the ventricle. Arterial pressure, end-diastolic ventricular volume, end-systolic ventricular volume and heart rate were measured. Injection of 800 nl caused a rapid rise in arterial pressure and stroke volume. There were no c

Active alkalinization by amphibian gastric fundic mucosa in vitro.

Gastric fundic mucosae in vitro from four species of frog and Necturus secrete HCO-3 at a steady-state rate of 0.25-0.55 microneq-cm-2-h-1 which corresponds to 5-10% of maximal H+ secretion. Net alkalinization was quantitated in mucosae with spontaneously resting H+ secretion or in mucosae inhibited by histamine H2-receptor antagonists or SNC-. HCO-3 secretion was inhibited by DNP (10(-4) M), CN- (10(-2) M), or anoxia. Acetazolamide inhibited alkalinization at 10(-2) M when added to the nutrient side and at 10(-4) M on the luminal side. Carbachol (10(-4) M) and DBcGMP (10(-4) M) stimulated alk

Unraveling the exposure pathways and toxicity mechanisms of representative systemic insecticides in amphibians.

Systemic insecticides, comprising neonicotinoids, systemic organophosphates, phenylpyrazoles (fipronil), and anthranilic diamides, now dominate global insecticide use. Their high water solubility and systemic translocation also drive migration into paddy fields, wetlands, and agricultural waterways and persistence in soils and sediments, the habitats amphibians depend on. Permeable skin, gill-dominated respiration, and obligate aquatic larval phases make amphibians especially vulnerable, yet assessments linking field exposure to internal toxicity remain limited. Focusing on these four classes,
