Knowledge of the cerebral cortical lobes and gyri is critical for the localization of lesions and for the correlation of radiologic findings with neurologic symptoms and signs. This article deals with the six cerebral lobes-frontal, parietal, occipital, temporal, limbic, and insula-and the fissures and imaginary lines that divide them. The major gyri and sulci of each lobe are individually considered. Anatomy and function are correlated for a few selected areas of particular clinical importance.

Various surgical approaches to the petrous apex for exposure and drainage of suppurative processes are available to the otologist. The petrous apex may be conveniently divided into anterior and posterior portions by a line in the coronal plane through the internal auditory canal. The approach to the posterior petrous apex follows fistulous tracts in the sinodural angle, the subarcuate fossa, and the infralabyrinthine tract. The anterior petrous apex may be entered by means of a radical mastoidectomy. Fistulous tracts into an infected anterior petrous apex may be found through the hypotympanum,

The optic pathway, or visual system, conveys sensory information from the retina in the globe to the visual cortex in the occipital lobe. The globe is the primary visual sensory organ responsible for gathering and focusing light and sending electrical and neural signals to the rest of the visual pathway. In the posterior globe, the retina detects incoming light from the environment and converts it into electrical and neural signals that travel along the optic nerve to be processed by the brain for visual perception. Disruptions in the optic pathway and associated clinical signs provide diagnos

The forehead is an anatomic region located between the frontal hairline cranially, the eyebrow and the glabella caudally, and the anterior border of the temporal fossa laterally on both sides. Its vertical situation, due to the telencephalon growth, is specific of the human species. From surface to deep planes, the skin and sub-cutaneous fat pads are described first. The muscular plane is constituted of the frontal muscles elevators of the forehead and the eyebrow, and the depressors which are the procerus and orbicularis oculi muscles superficially, the depressor supercilii muscle, and the co

The unique capacity, robust vascular supply, and drainage of the liver allow for surgeons to perform formal, nonanatomic, and parenchymal sparing resections for primary and metastatic hepatic lesions. Knowledge of hepatobiliary anatomy is crucial to allow for safe dissection and adequate preservation of the future liver remnant. The functional anatomy of the liver is based on Couinaud classification. Vascular, portal and biliary anatomic variations are necessary to identify on preoperative imaging to avoid unintentional injuries. Conventional common hepatic artery, hepatic arterial branches, p…

Pain-sensitive structures in the head and neck, including the scalp, periosteum, meninges, and blood vessels, are innervated predominantly by the trigeminal and upper cervical nerves. The trigeminal nerve supplies most of the sensation to the head and face, with the ophthalmic division (V1) providing innervation to much of the supratentorial dura mater and vessels. This creates referral patterns for pain that may be misleading to clinicians and patients, as described by studies involving awake craniotomies and stimulation with electrical and mechanical stimuli. Most brain parenchyma and suprat

The anatomy of the petrous face of the temporal bone, also known as the petrous pyramid, should be carefully examined to understand the location of, blood supply to, and venous drainage of meningiomas in this area (42%-59% of posterior fossa meningiomas). The petrous face is located in the skull base between the sphenoid and occipital bones. It consists of a base that joins the mastoid laterally and an apex that extends anteromedially to form the foramen lacerum. The anatomy can be divided into three surfaces: anterior/superior, posterior, and inferior. The anterior/superior surface is a conti…

The whole human body receives rich sensory innervation with only one exception and that is the brain tissue. The orofacial region is hence no exception. The head region consequently receives a rich network of sensory nerves making it special because the two types of sensory fibres, visceral and somatic overlap, especially in the pharynx. Also, different pain syndromes that affect this region are rather specific in comparison to their presentation in other body regions. With this review article we wanted to show the detailed anatomy of the peripheral sensory pathways, because of its importance …

Crucifixion was a widely used form of execution for capital crimes in antiquity. Civilizations and empires perfected the technique, leading to centuries of discussions, controversies, and questions, many of which concerned the death of Jesus Christ. To this day, much remains to be discovered in both religious and scientific realms. However, the aim of this study is to discuss such facts as are known from the medical perspectives of clinical anatomists. Nails/spikes were driven through the hands/wrists and feet of five adult cadavers, and the cadavers were then dissected to observe the anatomic

Among the carpal bones the scaphoid (Os scaphoideum) is the most important. The most frequent fracture of the carpus is a fracture of the scaphoid bone. The frequently occurring absence of healing of these fractures as well as unhealed ruptures of the ligament complex between the scaphoid and lunate, lead to the most severe biomechanical and thus the most severe clinical changes of the wrist. The detailed anatomy of the scaphoid, blood flow, ligament attachments, injury mechanisms and pathobiomechanics are described and illustrated.

Anatomy as the foundation of surgery is a concept no better exemplified than by the history of tracheal surgery. Incremental advancements in our understanding of the trachea's position, structure, blood supply and adjacent organs each allowed for stepwise improvements in the thoracic surgeon's ability to address upper airway disease. As such, the mastery of tracheal anatomy is fundamental to those clinicians responsible for treating such ailments. In this article, tracheal anatomy is reviewed and points critical to the thoracic surgeon are highlighted. The structure and location of the trachea…

Occlusal splints, also known as bite guards, oral orthotics, and oral appliances, are utilized frequently in dental practices. They are commonly used to relax jaw muscles, prevent temporomandibular jaw trauma, protect dentition, and control headaches. How well occlusal splints work is another matter. Numerous studies, when taken as a whole, suggest only a modest indication that they are useful. This review applies principles of neurophysiology to analyze the usefulness of several types of occlusal splint in relation to their design and function. A unique occlusal splint with a design based on
