Comparative analysis of the transcranial "far lateral" and endoscopic endonasal "far medial" approaches: surgical anatomy and clinical illustration.

OBJECTIVE: The main aim of our study was to analyze and compare the surgical anatomy pertinent to the dorsal transcranial transcondylar (far lateral approach) with that of the ventral endoscopic endonasal transcondylar (far medial approach) route. METHODS: Eight cadaveric specimens were dissected and analyzed bilaterally. Brainstem exposure and surgical corridor areas were measured. In addition, we present three clinical scenarios to illustrate the clinical feasibility of the proposed surgical strategies. RESULTS: The hypoglossal nerve, vertebral artery, and hypoglossal canal divide the lowe

A comparative study of cognition and brain anatomy between two neurodevelopmental disorders: 22q11.2 deletion syndrome and Williams syndrome.

BACKGROUND: 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is associated with intellectual disability, poor social interaction and a high prevalence of psychosis. However, to date there have been no studies comparing cognition and neuroanatomical characteristics of 22q11DS with other syndromes to investigate if the cognitive strengths and difficulties and neuroanatomical differences associated with 22q11DS are specific to the syndrome. Hence, it is difficult to know if the observed features of 22q11DS are simply due to a non-specific effect of having a genetic disorder or are specific to 22q11DS. METHOD

Comparative retrospective outcomes of endoscopic ultrasound-guided gastroenterostomy in patients with gastric outlet obstruction and post-surgical anatomy.

BACKGROUND: Data on endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided gastroenterostomy (EUS-GE) are mainly derived from patients with naïve anatomy. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of EUS-GE in patients with post-surgical anatomy and compare these findings with those from a cohort of patients with naïve anatomy. METHODS: A retrospective tertiary center analysis was performed of consecutive EUS-GE procedures. The wireless-EUS-GE-simplified technique (WEST) was employed for EUS-GE. Clinical success was defined as achieving a postprocedural gastric outlet obstruction scoring system score of ≥2. RES

Students' Learning Outcomes in a Virtual Microscopic Online and Face-to-Face Anatomy Course: Cross-Over Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Since 2021, the histology of organs in the microscopic anatomy course at the Department of Anatomy II of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich has been held as a hybrid course using a 3D virtual microscopy system. Evidence comparing synchronous online versus face-to-face instruction using an advanced 3D virtual slide system remains limited. In particular, it is unclear whether learning outcomes are equivalent across instructional modes, and whether individual student characteristics influence learning outcomes under these conditions. OBJECTIVE: This study systematically (1) co

Musculoskeletal architecture of the shoulder: A comparative anatomy study in bats and mice informing human rotator cuff function.

Overhead motion in humans often leads to shoulder injuries, a consequence of the evolutionary trade-off in glenohumeral joint anatomy that balances stability with mobility. Bats consistently engage in overhead motion during flight, subjecting their shoulders to substantial loading throughout their relatively long lifespan. Remarkably, despite the demands placed on a bat's shoulder, instability and rotator cuff tears, which could be fatal to bats in short order, are not observed in nature. We were thus inspired to study functional adaptations in the shoulders of bats that enable this overhead m

Comparative larval anatomy of the digestive system of three Calliphoridae (Diptera) species that cause different types of myiasis.

The Calliphoridae are one of the main Diptera families that include agents of the parasitic disease condition known as myiasis. Parasitism seems to have evolved multiple independent times within the Calliphoridae; consequently, this family includes a diversity of myiasis-causing species, varying in their obligate or facultative habits and in their specific location in the host. Larval morphological studies can provide novel and relevant insights into the biology of those species, as well as on the pathogenesis and evolution of myiasis; however, the anatomy of internal organs and structures -pa

Comparative three-dimensional jaw muscle anatomy of marsupial carnivores (Dasyurus spp.) and the termite-eating numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus).

Among marsupials, the endangered numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus) is the only obligate myrmecophage with a diet comprised strictly of termites. Like many other specialised myrmecophagous mammals, numbats have a gracile and highly specialised skull morphology with an elongated rostrum and small braincase. Myrmecobiidae is one of four taxonomic families within the Australasian marsupial order Dasyuromorphia, and to date, the muscular anatomy of any member of this group is relatively poorly known. We utilised microdissection and contrast-enhanced microcomputed tomography scanning to provide the fir

Unveiling the vulnerability of the human abducens nerve: insights from comparative cranial base anatomy in mammals and primates.

The topographic anatomy of the abducens nerve has been the subject of research for more than 150 years. Although its vulnerability was initially attributed to its length, this hypothesis has largely lost prominence. Instead, attention has shifted toward its intricate anatomical relations along the cranial base. Contrary to the extensive anatomical and neurosurgical literature on abducens nerve anatomy in humans, its complex anatomy in other species has received less emphasis. The main question addressed here is why the human abducens nerve is predisposed to injury. Specifically, we aim to perf

Comparative anatomy and morphology of the knee in translational models for articular cartilage disorders. Part I: Large animals.

BACKGROUND: The human knee is a complex joint, and affected by a variety of articular cartilage disorders. Large animal models are critical to model the complex disease mechanisms affecting a functional joint. Species-dependent differences highly affect the results of a pre-clinical study and need to be considered, necessitating specific knowledge not only of macroscopic and microscopic anatomical and pathological aspects, but also characteristics of their individual gait and joint movements. METHODS: Literature search in Pubmed. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: This narrative review summarizes the m

Comparative anatomy of the human and canine efferent tear duct system--impact of mucin MUC5AC on lacrimal drainage.

PURPOSE: To investigate the histomorphology of the canine tear drainage system and to show the distribution of mucin MUC5AC within the tissue. METHODS: Conjunctiva and tear drainage systems of 19 long-nosed dogs were investigated histologically and ultrastructurally. The tissues were stained with eight different antibodies reactive against less glycosylated and highly-glycosylated MUC5AC. Results were compared with findings in human tissue received from 12 body donors. RESULTS: Except for a distinctly longer nasolacrimal duct and several accessory openings of the duct into the nasal cavity,

Anatomy, histology, and morphology of fish gills in relation to feeding habits: a comparative review of marine and freshwater species.

This systematic review highlights the similarities and variations in gill morphology, histology, and anatomical structure between differing fish species. The gill system consists of mainly four pairs of gill arches in most teleost fishes, such as sea bass, sea bream, grouper, and red porgy, etc., while it consists of three pairs of gill arches in pufferfish and striped-red mullet fish. However, Clarias gariepinus had five pairs, including an additional rudimentary fifth-gill arch. The gill structure consisted of gill arches, gill rakers, gill filaments, and secondary lamellae with varied shape

Evolutionary traces of miniaturization in a giant-Comparative anatomy of brain and brain nerves in Bathochordaeus stygius (Tunicata, Appendicularia).

Appendicularia comprises 70 marine, invertebrate, chordate species. Appendicularians play important ecological and evolutionary roles, yet their morphological disparity remains understudied. Most appendicularians are small, develop rapidly, and with a stereotyped cell lineage, leading to the hypothesis that Appendicularia derived progenetically from an ascidian-like ancestor. Here, we describe the detailed anatomy of the central nervous system of Bathochordaeus stygius, a giant appendicularian from the mesopelagic. We show that the brain consists of a forebrain with on average smaller and more

Comparative Analysis of Sectional Anatomy, Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance of the Cadaveric Six-Banded Armadillo (Euphractus sexcintus) Head.

In this research, we examined the head of the six-banded armadillo (Euphractus sexcintus) using advanced imaging techniques, including computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, and correlated these findings with the anatomical cross sections. For this, we analyzed three adult specimens. By integrating imaging data with anatomical cross-sections, we present a detailed description of the structures that constitute the head of this species, highlighting its most distinctive features. Therefore, a well-developed tympanic cavity was observed. The masticatory muscles, including the tempora

Anterior Petrosectomy vs. Retrosigmoid Approach-Surgical Anatomy and Navigation-Augmented Morphometric Analysis: A Comparative Study in Cadaveric Laboratory Setting.

BACKGROUND: Different lateral and postero-lateral cranial approaches to the petroclival region and to the mid-upper brain stem have been described so far, some of which require extensive osseous demolition and possible damage of neurovascular structures. Neuronavigational systems are now extensively available for preoperative planning and intraoperative navigation to assist the surgeons in choosing the optimally invasive approach for each pathology. Herein, we describe a detailed navigation-augmented morphometric analysis to bring insight into the usefulness of an anterior petrosectomy (AP) to
