Segmental aplasia of the left uterine horn in a multiparous Holstein cow was diagnosed by palpation and ultrasonography. Treatment with prostaglandin was unsuccessful in eliminating the fluid from the distended uterine horn. Segmental aplasia should be included in the list of differential diagnoses for cows with nonresponsive uterine enlargement.

We tested the hypothesis that daily FSH surges are correlated with the anestrous condition in adult Turkish hamsters. Blood samples were collected from anestrous hamsters on short (12L:12D) and long photoperiods (16L:8D) by cardiac puncture. Ovaries, fetuses and plasma were collected from zebra mares shot in the Etosha National Park in Namibia between 15 and 25 August 1983. Ovarian weight was affected by reproductive status and most of the non-pregnant mares were anoestrous. The number of follicles varied between individuals and only pro-oestrous/oestrous mares had follicles larger than 20 mm in diameter. The largest follicle in pregnant mares was only 9 mm in diameter. Over a period of approx. 15 months, post-mortem (PM) examinations were made on genital organs (34 gilts and 81 sows) from a sow-pool with reproductive disturbances. Serum estradiol, progesterone, LH, and FSH were determined by RIA in 20- to 30-month-old constant estrous (CE), irregular pseudopregnant (PP), and anestrous (AS) female rats and from 4- to 5-month-old cycling female rats.
