Animal colonization and infection models are frequently used to investigate host-pathogen interactions and disease progression. Here, we describe an effective model to investigate the ability of the newly emerged fungal pathogen Candida auris to persistently colonize the gut of immunocompetent mice. In our model, mice are inoculated by gavage and are subsequently monitored for colonization by determining daily fungal stool burdens. At the end of the experiment, mice are culled, and their spleen, liver, kidneys, lungs, heart, and caecum harvested to determine the fungal burdens in order to inve

Twin pregnancies are an economically unwanted phenomenon in dairy cattle, not only because they increase pregnancy losses, but also because antibiotics usage and culling rate of the dam are also dramatically increased due to them, furthermore animal welfare issues are also affected through them. In cattle, under field conditions using an early pregnancy determination tool, the first accurate diagnosis from the pregnancy status is available from around day 28, although further confirmations of pregnancy are required. Twin pregnancy diagnosis is available either by rectal palpation or ultrasonog

Hoof disorders in dairy cows reduce productivity and increase culling risk, causing economic losses and animal welfare concerns. The coronet score is a 5-point indicator of hoof health (1 = healthy; 5 = severe) that may be useful in breeding programs. However, genetic relationships between coronet score and type traits remain unclear. We estimated genetic correlations between coronet score and type traits related to hoof and body size in Holstein dairy cows. Data from 24,174 first-lactation Holstein cows were analyzed. Coronet scores were obtained from test-day records, whereas type traits wer

The stamping-out policy for the control of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) in countries that are free from FMD without vaccination has a dramatic socio-economic impact, huge animal welfare issues and may result in the loss of farm animal genetic resources. As an alternative to pre-emptive culling or emergency vaccination we further explore the possibility to use antiviral drugs in the event of an FMD outbreak. In the present study, we tested the in vitro cytotoxicity and anti-FMDV activity of 1,2,4,5-tetrahydro-[1,4]thiazepino[4,5-a]benzimidazole. The molecule was shown to inhibit the repl

In recent years, there has been increasing recognition of the value of multiple data sources available to fulfill surveillance objectives, and the use of these has been applied to address many questions relating to animal health surveillance. In Ireland, we face a slightly different problem, namely, best use of an existing surveillance resource (serological samples collected over many years from cull cows at slaughter), which has been used to substantiate freedom from Brucella abortus following its successful eradication in 2009. In this study, we evaluate a sampling methodology to use this re

The age structure of the dog population is essential for planning and evaluating control programs for zoonotic diseases. We analyzed data of an owned-dog census in order to characterize, for the first time, the structure of a dog population under compulsory culling in a visceral leishmaniasis endemic area (Panorama, São Paulo State, Brazil) that recorded a dog-culling rate of 28% in the year of the study. Data on 1,329 households and 1,671 owned dogs revealed an owned dog:human ratio of 1:7. The mean age of dogs was estimated at 1.73 years; the age pyramid indicated high birth and mortality ra

Small ruminant lentiviruses (SLRVs) have been recognized throughout the world for decades. SLRVs are a heterogenous group of viruses that can infect sheep, goats, and wild ruminants. Evidence supports cross-species infection. These viruses cause lifelong infections where they target specific organs, which can result in production losses due to diminished milk production, consequential increases in neonatal death and diminished growth, and premature culling of prime age animals. No vaccine or treatments have proved effective. Control programs rely on an understanding of viral transmission and a

The Canadian Animal Health Surveillance System (CAHSS) is a collaborative network that gathers and uses surveillance data to monitor animal health, reduce disease impacts, and inform national priorities. Beef cattle practitioners, industry professionals, and veterinary epidemiologists collaborated to establish the primary animal health and welfare surveillance priorities for the beef sector over the next 5 y. A 4-step process with meetings, surveys, and a modified DISCONTOOLS rubric was used to set surveillance goals and to prioritize diseases and other issues for the Canadian beef industry. I

To assess interest in implementing a California dairy quality assurance program, practices and opinions of dairy producers and industry leaders were surveyed by a mailed questionnaire and by focus groups. The majority of the 55 participants in the focus group were dairy producers; processor marketing executives, extension dairy advisors, packinghouse executives, and dairy veterinarians were represented. The consensus among the focus groups was that a quality assurance program should be voluntary, be managed by creameries, and confer an economic advantage to participants. Focus group members li

Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat a variety of gram-positive and gram-negative infections, such as infections of the ear, nose, and throat, genitourinary tract, skin, and lower respiratory tract; gonorrhea; and Helicobacter pylori. The prophylactic benefit of both amoxicillin and Augmentin (amoxicillin-clavulanate for use against β-lactamase-expressing bacteria) was evaluated for inhalation anthrax in cynomolgus macaques in 2 studies. A pilot study on amoxicillin-clavulanate that used a portion of the study animals demonstrated empirically that dosing twice a day was eff

(1) Background: Transboundary notifiable infectious viral diseases, such as lumpy skin disease (LSD), highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), and foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), continue to severely disrupt Europe's animal health and welfare, food security, and the multi-burdened livestock sector. (2) Methods: Through an extensive literature search, with data collected from the scientific literature, outbreak notifications, and European Union (EU) policy reports, this study synthesises evidence on the economic and societal impacts of preventive mass vaccination compared with stamping out for l

In this paper the economic impact of controlling the Q fever epidemic in 2007-2011 in the Netherlands is assessed. Whereas most of the long-term benefits of the implemented control programme stem from reduced disease burden and human health costs, the majority of short-term intervention costs were incurred in the dairy goat sector. The total intervention cost in agriculture amounted approximately 35,000 Euro per DALY occurred. By culling of infected animals, breeding prohibition and vaccination, the epidemic seems to be under control. As the dairy goat vaccination programme continues, future e

The clinical signs are described of Venezuelan encephalomyelitis virus (VEEV) infection in mice after both airborne and subcutaneous (s.c.) challenge. Group clinical scores reflected the known pathogenesis of infection by both s.c. and airborne challenge, and with epizootic and enzootic strains of VEEV. This observation confirms the specific relationship of the observed clinical signs to VEEV infection. Within an experiment, those who are assessing the animals for clinical signs must have a common understanding of their appearance, including severity, and should be unaware of the allocation of

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) remains a lethal parasitic disease, disproportionately affecting resource-limited regions where sustained control measures are often economically and logistically impractical. Consequently, cost-effective and sustainable strategies tailored to seasonal transmission patterns are urgently needed. Because temperature and rainfall strongly influence sandfly populations, aligning control efforts with seasonal transmission dynamics may enhance effectiveness while reducing costs. This study proposes an impulsive control strategy within a temperature- and rainfall-dependent

Twenty-seven neonate piglets (range from 0.35 to 1.17 kg) were evaluated for the effectiveness of blunt force trauma as a method of on-farm cull. Brainstem function, brain injury, and hemorrhage scores (increasing from 0 to 3) were assessed after striking the head against a concrete floor. Electroencephalograms (EEG) from a subset of 15 piglets were recorded before and after blunt force trauma for electrophysiological assessments. Blunt force trauma was performed by a single experienced farmer in a commercial farm by holding the piglet by its both hind legs and striking the head against the co

Leishmaniasis is a vector-borne disease of worldwide distribution, currently present in 98 countries. Since late 2010, an unusual increase of human visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis cases has been observed in the south-western Madrid region, totaling more than 600 cases until 2015. Some hosts, such as human, domestic dog and cat, rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), and hare (Lepus granatensis), were found infected by the parasite of this disease in the area. Hares were described as the most important reservoir due to their higher prevalence, capacity to infect the vector, and presence of the sa

Lameness in sows is an emerging disease condition with major effects on animal welfare and economics. Yet the direct impact on reproduction results remains unclear. The present field study investigated the impact of lameness and claw lesions throughout the reproductive cycle on (re)production results of sows. In five farms, a total of 491 group-housed sows were followed up for a period of one reproductive cycle. Sows were assessed for lameness every time they were moved to another area in the farm. Claw lesions were scored at the beginning and at the end of the cycle. Reproduction results incl

The bison population in the Bialowieza Forest in Poland has now grown to approximately 300, while the herds in the Belarusian part of the forest total about 240 bison. The first signs of a health problem in these herds appeared in 1980, when two cases of balanoposthitis were detected in two bulls (2 and 5 years of age). Since 1980 research has been conducted to explain the cause of diseases, particularly balanoposthitis, and to monitor the health of bison in Bialowieza Forest. A total number of 614 bison (294 male and 320 female) of different ages was eliminated between 1980 and 2000. Not all

Influenza viruses remain a persistent threat to both human and animal health, whereas current countermeasures-vaccination and livestock culling-offer only delayed, partial, or economically burdensome protection. Here, we describe the development of a mucosal nanotherapy based on chromosome-free minicells derived from Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, engineered to surface-display a broadly reactive anti-hemagglutinin nanobody. These therapeutic agents, termed "neutralizing nanosomes" present nanobody molecules anchored on the minicell surface that retain full binding functionality against a broad

Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) is a retrovirus of cattle that infects approximately 45% of all US dairy cattle, with about 90% of US dairy herds having at least one infected animal. Studies have found BLV infection to be associated with multiple measures of decreased immune function, which may explain the observed economic losses from milk production, decreased cow longevity, and predisposition to lymphoma and other diseases. Our objective was to measure the association between BLV infection and cow longevity in dairy cow operations. Ninety-one dairy herds from 9 US states volunteered to particip
