Ultrasound images of the ascending aorta of anesthetized northern fur seals and Steller sea lions confirm that the aortic bulb maintains continuous blood flow.

The increased size and enhanced compliance of the aortic bulb-the enlargement of the ascending aorta-are believed to maintain blood flow in pinnipeds during extended periods of diastole induced by diving bradycardia. The aortic bulb has been described ex vivo in several species of pinnipeds, but in vivo measurements are needed to investigate the relationship between structure and function. We obtained ultrasound images using electrocardiogram-gated transesophageal echocardiography during anesthesia and after atropine administration to assess the relationship between aortic bulb anatomy and car

Essential requirement for nicastrin in marginal zone and B-1 B cell development.

γ-secretase is an intramembrane protease complex that catalyzes the proteolytic cleavage of amyloid precursor protein and Notch. Impaired γ-secretase function is associated with the development of Alzheimer's disease and familial acne inversa in humans. In a forward genetic screen of mice with N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea-induced mutations for defects in adaptive immunity, we identified animals within a single pedigree exhibiting both hypopigmentation of the fur and diminished T cell-independent (TI) antibody responses. The causative mutation was in Ncstn, an essential gene encoding the protein nicas

Organotropism of methylmercury in fish of the southeastern of Brazil.

This is one of the first studies to evaluate the effect of biometric variables (total length and weight), diet, and abiotic matrices (sediment and water column) on the bioaccumulation of methylmercury in tissues (muscle, liver, and gills) of four fish (two carnivore-invertivores, Pimelodus fur and Pachyurus adspersus; one carnivore-piscivore, Oligosarcus hepsetus; and one omnivore, Pimelodella lateristriga) in the lower section of a river in southeastern Brazil. Samples of fish (n = 120), water (n = 5) and sediment (n = 5) were collected at five sites characterized by pollution with mercury du

Mercury concentrations decline with age in the fur of females of an insectivorous terrestrial mammal (Myotis lucifugus).

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a toxic form of mercury that bioaccumulates in organisms and biomagnifies through food webs. MeHg concentrations can be high in aquatic environments, and this puts high trophic-level predators who derive energy originating from aquatic environments at risk of toxic effects. Due to the potential for bioaccumulation of MeHg over an individual's life, the risk of MeHg toxicity may increase as animals age, and this risk may be especially high in species with relatively high metabolic rates. Total mercury (THg) concentrations were measured from the fur of adult female little

Epizootiology of Brucella infection in Australian fur seals.

Novel members of the bacterial genus Brucella have recently emerged as pathogens of various marine mammal species and as potential zoonotic agents. We investigated the epizootiology of Brucella infection in Australian fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus) by establishing demographic and temporal variations in antibody prevalence, attempting isolation of the causative agent, and determining whether this potential pathogen is involved in frequent abortions observed in this pinniped species. Two competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (cELISAs), an indirect ELISA, and a fluorescence

Na+,K(+)-ATPase activities are increased in brain in both congenital and acquired hyperammonemic syndromes.

Activities of Na+,K(+)-ATPase were measured in brain regions of experimental animals with either congenital or acquired hyperammonemia. In the sparse-fur (spf) mutant mouse, with a genetic X-linked deficiency of ornithine transcarbamylase, an animal model of congenital hyperammonemia, Na+,K(+)-ATPase was increased in frontal cortex (by 57%, P < 0.001), cerebellum (by 61%, P < 0.001), brainstem (by 71%, P < 0.001) and striatum (by 48%, P < 0.01). Four weeks following portacaval anastomosis in the rat, Na+,K(+)-ATPase activities were increased in cerebellum and striatum (by 19%, P < 0.01) and in

Antimicrobial resistance analysis of Escherichia coli isolated from foxes in China.

Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a common gut commensal and an important opportunistic pathogen in humans and animals. Here, we investigated antimicrobial resistance (AMR), virulence traits, and dissemination potential of E. coli from farmed foxes raised for fur production in northern China. From 248 fecal samples collected in Liaoning, Hebei, and Shandong, 109 E. coli isolates were recovered. We first performed phenotypic screening using four clinically important sentinel antibiotics (meropenem, polymyxin B, tigecycline, and ceftazidime) and then conducted in-depth characterization of the 34 scr

Lessons from the 2024 avian influenza vaccination campaign in Finland: a qualitative inquiry.

Highly pathogenicity avian influenza H5N1 (HPAI H5N1) viruses cause a continuous threat to wild avian populations. During recent years, spillover to both wild and domestic mammals has occurred with an increasing frequency. As a consequence of the recent developments in the epidemiological situation, the human-animal interface with the risk of human exposure to HPAI H5 has expanded. In 2024, Finland became a global forerunner to offer H5 vaccine to occupational risk groups, specifically fur and poultry workers, following an extensive HPAI H5N1 outbreak in 2023 in fur-farmed minks and foxes. Des

B-cell small lymphocytic lymphoma in a free-ranging South American fur seal (Arctocephalus australis).

Lymphomas are malignant neoplasms of the hematopoietic system arising from lymphocytes with highly variable biologic behavior. B-cell small lymphocytic lymphoma (B-SLL) is a non-Hodgkin lymphoma infrequently described in domestic and wild animals. The present study describes a case of B-SLL in a free-ranging adult male Arctocephalus australis in Brazil. The main necropsy findings included poor body condition, generalized lymphadenomegaly, severe and diffuse splenomegaly, and multiple, white to yellow nodules in the kidneys and small intestine. Histologically, these organs were partially or tot

Dirofilaria immitis in pinnipeds and a new host record.

BACKGROUND: Dirofilaria immitis is a mosquito-borne pathogen that is spreading worldwide, and the associated infection (i.e. dirofilariosis) is becoming a threat to animals and humans living in endemic areas. Little is known about the occurrence and risk of infection of D. immitis in pinnipeds. Here we report dirofilariosis by D. immitis in several pinniped species kept in captivity in Portugal. METHODS: Animals were housed in an oceanographic park located in Algarve, southern Portugal, a geographical area endemic for canine dirofilariosis. To assess the occurrence of D. immitis, blood was co

The marginal male hypothesis explains only small amounts of spatial variation in density in pinnipeds.

The marginal male hypothesis is a mechanism proposed to explain gregariousness in pinnipeds. Here, we explore whether this mechanism, combined with density-dependent pup survival, can also account for heterogeneity in density across colonies, as observed in Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella). We built a discrete-time matrix model inspired by the Antarctic fur seal to investigate how differences in density between two colonies can emerge through mate choice and density-dependent pup mortality. Our model assumes a heritable male colony preference that is coupled to competitive ability,

Fur Seals Suppress REM Sleep for Very Long Periods without Subsequent Rebound.

Virtually all land mammals and birds have two sleep states: slow-wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep [1, 2]. After deprivation of REM sleep by repeated awakenings, mammals increase REM sleep time [3], supporting the idea that REM sleep is homeostatically regulated. Some evidence suggests that periods of REM sleep deprivation for a week or more cause physiological dysfunction and eventual death [4, 5]. However, separating the effects of REM sleep loss from the stress of repeated awakening is difficult [2, 6]. The northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) is a semiaquatic mammal [7

Variable activity of disophenol against hookworms and lice of northern fur seal pups on St. Paul Island, Alaska.

Six critical tests with disophenol were conducted in July, 1978, in fur seal pups (Callorhinus ursinus) naturally-infected with adult hookworms, Uncinaria lucasi, and infested with various stages of two species of sucking lice, Proechinopthirus fluctus (Ferris) and Antarctophthirus callorhini (Osborn). Disophenol at a dose rate of 12.5 mg/kg was administered subcutaneously to each of six pups. Each pup was contained in an individual cage for 60 h posttreatment at which time pups were exmained at necropsy. Efficacy against hookworms ranged from 2% to 88% and of both species of lice ranged from

Furuncular myiasis caused by the human bot-fly Dermatobia hominis in a domestic cat from Brazil.

This paper reports a case of furuncular myiasis caused by the human bot-fly Dermatobia hominis in a domestic cat from Brazil. A crossbred shorthaired female cat of approximately 3 years old, presented with three boil-like cutaneous lesions at the left cranioventral region of the neck. These were diagnosed as furuncular myiasis. The animal was sedated, and after shaving the fur, bot-fly larvae were removed from the lesion by digital compression. Afterwards, the wounds were treated with 10% iodine solution and also with wound-healing cream containing sulfanilamide, urea and beeswax. Maggots were

Cotinine as a Sentinel of Canine Exposure to Tobacco Smoke.

The adverse health effects of both active and passive tobacco smoke have been well-known in humans for a long time. It is presumable that even pets, which intimately share the owner's lifestyle, may be exposed to the same risks. This study aimed to detect and quantify cotinine (a metabolite of nicotine) in the serum and hair of dogs using a specific commercial ELISA immunoassay kit. A total of 32 dogs, 16 exposed and 16 unexposed to the owner's smoke, were enrolled. The cotinine concentration was higher in the exposed than the unexposed group in both matrices (p < 0.001), with greater values i

Detoxification mechanism of heavy metals in marine mammals and seabirds: interaction of selenium with mercury, silver, copper, zinc, and cadmium in liver.

Subcellular distribution of mercury, selenium, silver, copper, zinc, and cadmium was determined in the liver of northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus), black-footed albatrosses (Diomedea nigripes), and Dall's porpoises (Phocoenoides dalli). Mercury, selenium, and silver were preferentially accumulated in nuclear, lysosomal, and mitochondrial fraction with an increase in their hepatic concentrations, whereas copper, zinc, and cadmium were accumulated mainly in cytosol with an increase in the hepatic concentrations for all three species. To gain insight into the existing state of the metals, t
