Molecular changes associated with migratory departure from wintering areas in obligate songbird migrants.

Day length regulates the development of spring migratory and subsequent reproductive phenotypes in avian migrants. This study used molecular approaches, and compared mRNA and proteome-wide expression in captive redheaded buntings that were photostimulated under long-day (LD) conditions for 4 days (early stimulated, LD-eS) or for ∼3 weeks until each bird had shown 4 successive nights of Zugunruhe (stimulated, LD-S); controls were maintained under short days. After ∼3 weeks of LD, photostimulated indices of the migratory preparedness (fattening, weight gain and Zugunruhe) were paralleled with up

The effect of bone morphogenetic protein-2 on osteosarcoma metastasis.

PURPOSE: Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 (BMP-2) may offer the potential to enhance allograft-host osseous union in limb-salvage surgery following osteosarcoma resection. However, there is concern regarding the effect of locally applied BMP-2 on tumor recurrence and metastasis. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the effect of exogenous BMP-2 on osteosarcoma migration and invasion across a panel of tumor cell lines in vitro and to characterize the effect of BMP-2 on pulmonary osteosarcoma metastasis within a xenograft model. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: The effect of BMP-2 on in vitro tumor grow

Indomethacin treatment reduces microglia activation and increases numbers of neuroblasts in the subventricular zone and ischaemic striatum after focal ischaemia.

Neuroblasts from the subventricular zone (SVZ) migrate to striatum following stroke, but most of them die in the ischaemic milieu and this can be related to exacerbated microglial activation. Here, we explored the effects of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory indomethacin on microglial activation, neuronal preservation and neuroblast migration following experimental striatal stroke in adult rats. Animals were submitted to endothelin-1 (ET-1)-induced focal striatal ischaemia and were treated with indomethacin or sterile saline (i.p.) for 7 days, being perfused after 8 or 14 days. Effects of L1 adhesion molecule agonistic mimetics on signal transduction in neuronal functions.

The L1 cell adhesion molecule plays an essential role in neural development and repair. It is not only a 'lock and key' recognition molecule, but an important signal transducer that stimulates regenerative-beneficial cellular functions such as neurite outgrowth, neuronal cell migration, survival, myelination, and synapse formation. Triggering L1 functions after neurotrauma improves functional recovery. In addition, loss-of-function mutations in the L1 gene lead to the L1 syndrome, a rare, X-linked neurodevelopmental disorder with an incidence of approximately 1:30,000 in newborn males. To use

Human disease-associated extracellular matrix orthologs ECM3 and QBRICK regulate primary mesenchymal cell migration in sea urchin embryos.

Sea urchin embryos have been one of model organisms to investigate cellular behaviors because of their simple cell composition and transparent body. They also give us an opportunity to investigate molecular functions of human proteins of interest that are conserved in sea urchin. Here we report that human disease-associated extracellular matrix orthologues ECM3 and QBRICK are necessary for mesenchymal cell migration during sea urchin embryogenesis. Immunofluorescence has visualized the colocalization of QBRICK and ECM3 on both apical and basal surface of ectoderm. On the basal surface, QBRICK

Application of Ultrasound in Detecting and Removing Migrating Grass Awns in Dogs and Cats: A Systematic Review.

Migrating grass awns are an important cause of disease in dogs and cats. Plant awns can migrate into several body tissues and cavities because of their fusiform shape and backward-pointing barbs. Their migration causes inflammatory tissue reaction and clinical signs depend upon their localization. Ultrasound has been described as a useful, noninvasive, and readily available tool to identify and guide vegetal foreign bodies removal in animals. The aim of this systematic review was to summarize current knowledge on the application of ultrasonography in the identification and removal of grass awn

[Ultramicroscopic study of the invasion of the mucosa of the colon by Entamoeba histolytica in axenic cultures].

Animal models have been utilized to study experimentally produced intestinal amebiasis. The guinea pig has been the animal of choice to study the mechanisms by which trophozoites of E. histolytica produce colonic lesions. The purpose of this study was to produce lesions in the colon of newborn guinea pigs by the injection of E. histolytica, HM-1 IMSS, strain grown axenically, and to characterize the early changes with the light and electron microscopes. A total of 35 guinea pigs, one to two days old, were inoculated into the cecum with one and a half million of trophozoites of E. histolytica.

Involvement of NO in the failure of neutrophil migration in sepsis induced by Staphylococcus aureus.

1. Sepsis induced by S. aureus was used to investigate whether neutrophil migration failure to infectious focus correlates with lethality in Gram-positive bacteria-induced sepsis in mice. 2. By contrast with the sub-lethal (SL-group), the lethal (L-group) intraperitoneal inoculum of S. aureus caused failure of neutrophil migration (92% reduction), high CFU in the exudate, bacteremia and impairment of in vitro neutrophil chemotactic activity. 3. Pre-treatments of L-group with adequate doses of aminoguanidine prevented the neutrophil migration failure and improved the survival of the animals (pr

PM2.5 promotes migration of hepatocellular carcinoma by targeting miR-25.

BACKGROUND: Studies have identified a correlation between fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure and the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), though the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigates the regulatory effects of PM2.5 on HCC migration. METHODS: Wound healing assays were conducted to evaluate the invasion and migration capabilities of liver cancer cells. Western blot and immunohistochemistry were employed to assess E-cadherin and Vimentin expression levels. Reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was used to measure miR-25

Effects of heavy metals imission on the cellular immunity of guinea pigs with experimental ascariosis.

A study was performed on the short-term effects of industrial heavy metals imission (Hg, Cu, Pb, Zn), collected at 5 km from a mercury-producing plant, on T- and B-lymphocytes and peritoneal macrophages of guinea pigs with experimental ascariosis (Ascaris suum). Administration of the imission for 5 days showed a significant decrease in T- and B-cell population and in macrophage phagocytic ability during the migration phase of Ascaris suum when compared with an infected but untreated group of animals. This was also manifested by an eight-fold increase in the density of migrating ascaris larvae

Macrophage migration inhibition studies of lymphocytes taken from guinea-pigs suffering from experimental polymyositis.

An experimental form of polymyositis, induced in guinea-pigs by means of injections of rabbit muscle homogenate in Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA), had been investigated with a view to the analysis of the role of cellular immune response in this disease. We have used the direct macrophage migration inhibition test on peritoneal exudate cells taken from myositic animals, so as to identify those components of muscle against which lymphocytes of myositic animals are sensitized. These lymphocytes were found to be sensitized principally against the myofibrillar fraction of muscle. Moreover, when t

Licochalcone B alleviates pulmonary vascular remodeling via inhibiting Furin/TGF-β1 in pulmonary hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is characterized by pulmonary vascular remodeling, and Furin, a proprotein convertase critical for TGF-β1 activation, has shown promise as a novel therapeutic target for PH. However, its specific role in PH pathogenesis and potential inhibitors have remained unexplored. PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the role of Furin in PH-associated vascular remodeling and evaluate the therapeutic potential of the newly discovered Furin inhibitor, Licochalcone B (LicoB), in PH. METHODS: We assessed Furin expression levels in multiple PH animal models and ev

Evaluation of a new self-expandable silicone stent in an experimental tracheal stenosis.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To assess the usefulness of an animal model for testing new tracheobronchial stents. SETTING: Animal laboratory of a university hospital. ANIMALS AND INTERVENTIONS: In a series with 12 mini-pigs, we induced a stable fibromalacic tracheal stenosis that was 50% to 70% of the normal tracheal diameter. After dilation we inserted a 16 x 40-mm self-expandable silicone stent into the stenotic part of the trachea in 10 of the mini-pigs. Five of the stents had a smooth outer surface, and five had additional silicone retaining spikes. Because of a long stenosis in two of the mini-pig

[Zoonoses with wildlife reservoirs: a threat to public health and the economy].

The world is experiencing an increase in emergent infections as a result of anthropogenic changes of the biosphere and globalization. Global warming unrestricted exploitation of natural resources such as forests and fisheries, urbanization, human migration, and industrialization of animal husbandry cause environmental destruction and fragmentation. These changes of the biosphere favor local emergence of zoonoses from their natural biotopes and their interaction with domestic animals and human populations. Subsequently, international commerce, human and animal migration and travel, favor the di…

Experience with auto suture surgical stapling instruments. Fate of enterically applied staples.

Inverting serosa-to serosa staple applications may lead to intraluminal extrusion of staples. The possible clinical pathological consequences of such a migration are examined. Technical maneuvers designed to prevent errors and expedite safer handling of automatic stapling devices are presented. Automatic stapling instruments, both in the animal model and in the clinical situation, have produced eminently satisfactory results for us.

Human monkeypox expansion from the endemic to non-endemic regions: Control measures.

The recent monkeypox outbreak in non-endemic countries is a rare event. It is a zoonosis with clinical features similar to smallpox, transmitting from animal to human and human to human. Since 2000, the number of monkeypox cases in humans had increased in African countries, resulting in its spread to the other parts of the world. On May 26, 2022 World Health Organization has confirmed 120 cases of monkeypox in 23 non-endemic countries. The decreased immunity to the Orthopoxviruses, human migration from endemic to non-endemic regions, genetic mutations in the viral genome, and reduced surveilla

IL-15 promotes immune escape, invasion, and metastasis of pancreatic cancer by upregulating PD-L1 expression via the JAK1/STAT1/IRF1 pathway.

The expression of Programmed Death-Ligand 1 (PD-L1) in tumor cells is regulated by multiple factors, and this expression further affects the immune function of the microenvironment. However, the effect of Interleukin 15 (IL-15) cytokine on PD-L1 expression in pancreatic cancer and its related mechanisms remain unclear. Bioinformatics databases suggest a close correlation between IL-15 and PD-L1. WB, qPCR, and flow cytometry experiments confirmed that IL-15 upregulates PD-L1 expression in pancreatic cancer cells.
