Antitumor and hepatoprotective effect of Cuscuta reflexa Roxb. in a murine model of colon cancer.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Cuscuta reflexa Roxb. (C. reflexa) is a well-known traditional herbal plant, with numerous inherent therapeutic potentials including anticancer, antitumor, antibacterial, analgesic, anthelmintic, laxative and others. Moreover, the anticancer and antitumor potentials of this herb are ongoing with several trails, thus an attempt was made to assess the anticancer and hepatoprotective potentials of traditional C. reflexa herbs. METHOD: The dried ethanolic extract of C. reflexa was tested for acute oral toxicity in the treated animals subsequently their behavioral,

Isolation and Identification of Staphylococcus Species Obtained from Healthy Companion Animals and Humans.

The close contact between people and their pets has generated the exchange of skin microbiota, accompanied by bacteria that present resistance to antibiotics. Staphylococcus spp., opportunistic pathogens present in the skin and mucosa of mammals, have had their importance recognized in human and veterinary medicine. The objectives of this study were to identify Staphylococcus spp. present in isolates from the nostrils of healthy humans, dogs and cats as well as to determine their phenotype of resistance to methicillin. Strain identification was performed by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and anti

Evaluation of ELISA for detection of rabies antibodies in domestic carnivores.

Serological tests of pets have increased as many rabies-free countries have amended their quarantine measures and adopted a scheme requiring rabies vaccination followed by a serological test. A European directive requires the measurement of neutralising antibodies as proof of protection to allow the free movement of pets within the European Union and between third countries non listed in the list C of regulation 998/2003 and European countries. At present, the recommended neutralisation tests (FAVN test or RFFIT) are time-consuming, expensive and require highly trained technicians as well as s

Application of a One-Health Approach for Dermatophyte Infections.

Dermatomycoses pose significant zoonotic and public health challenges, involving interactions among fungal agents, host immunity, and environmental reservoirs. Eight cases of dermatophyte infection involving five humans, two cats and one dog were investigated in the Umbria region applying a One-Health approach, as recommended by the CDC. Fungal isolates were identified by mycological and molecular methods as Microsporum canis (n = 4), Nannizzia gypsea (n = 3), and Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes genotype III* (n = 1). The source of infection was identified in four cases enablin

Bacterial cellulase from the intestinal tract of the sugarcane borer.

Cellulolytic enzymes have wide use in several industrial segments (e.g. biofuels, pulp and paper, food, and cosmetics). However, one of the challenges is their large-scale production with high specific activity to eliminate the dependence of the purchase of enzymatic cocktails produced by commercial parties. The aims of this study were (1) isolation, selection, and partial characterization of bacterial cellulases present in the intestinal tract of the sugarcane borer and (2) to identify cellulase-producing bacteria by analyzing the 16S rDNA gene. Cellulase production and purification assays re

Chemical hazards faced by animal handlers.

A number of chemical hazards are associated with the care and handling of animals. A variety of pesticides are used to control fleas, ticks, and other insects. Rodenticides often are used in animal housing facilities. Veterinarians and their helpers may be exposed to anesthetic gases, pharmaceuticals, including antineoplastic agents, disinfectants such as phenol and formaldehyde, and sterilants such as ethylene oxide. Great care must be taken to minimize occupational exposures to chemical hazards.

Skin Uptake of 131I in a Veterinary Practice.

Accidental trace 131I skin contamination resulted in an intake to a veterinary nuclear medicine technician at Colorado State University (CSU). The resulting dose to the technician was determined through an in-vivo measurement of radioactivity in the thyroid. Inhalation and ingestion of the isotope were ruled out due to the chemical nature of the 131I, as determined by a previous study. The CSU Radiation Control Office performed measurements of the technician's thyroid daily and then weekly to quantify the uptake [2.2 kBq (60.1 nCi)] as well as the effective half-life of 131I (7.61 days) for th

Distribution and antimicrobial resistance profiles of bacterial species in stray cats, hospital-admitted cats, and veterinary staff in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance is becoming increasingly important in both human and veterinary medicine. According to the One Health concept, an important step is to monitor the resistance patterns of pathogenic bacteria. In this study, the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns and trends of bacteria isolated from stray cats, hospital-admitted cats, and veterinary staff in South Korea between 2017 and 2018 were investigated. RESULTS: The minimum inhibitory concentrations of different antibiotics for Staphylococcus spp., Enterobacteriaceae, and Enterococcus spp. were determined to establ

Occupational allergy to animals.

This chapter reviews the epidemiology, manifestations, etiologic agents, and exposure controls related to occupational allergies from animals and insects, including both respiratory and dermatologic responses. The overall prevalence of allergic respiratory symptoms in exposed workers is about 23% 4-9% of exposed individuals develop asthma. Symptom development is related to duration and intensity of exposure. The most prevalent dermatologic findings are contact urticaria and eczematous dermatitis. While a history of atopy is associated with the risk of symptom development, this factor has poor

Anaphylaxis in laboratory workers because of rodent handling: two case reports.

INTRODUCTION: Occupational allergy to rodents among laboratory animal workers is common. Most patients generally experience allergic symptoms after the first few years of work. Associated symptoms are usually mild, such as rhinoconjunctivits, urticaria, and asthma. Anaphylaxis, although rare, could be severe and life threatening. METHODS: We have described in this study two cases of laboratory workers that developed skin and respiratory reactions following laboratory rat and mouse bites, consistent with anaphylaxis. RESULTS: Skin testing was found positive for rat epithelium in the patient w

Respiratory allergy to rats: exposure-response relationships in laboratory animal workers.

Laboratory animal workers are at high risk of developing occupational allergy. Little is known about the relationship between levels of exposure and the risk of developing laboratory animal allergy. A cross-sectional study was performed in 540 workers at eight facilities to quantify the exposure-response relationship for allergy to rats, while controlling for determinants like atopy, gender, and smoking. All participants completed a questionnaire, underwent skin prick testing with common and occupational allergens, and total IgE as well as occupational allergen-specific IgE antibodies were ser

Q Fever: Who Is at Risk? A Serological Survey in the General Population and Occupationally Exposed Individuals in Northern Italy.

BACKGROUND: Q fever is a zoonotic disease caused by the intracellular bacterium Coxiella (C.) burnetii. In ruminants, it mainly leads to reproductive disorders. In humans, transmission typically occurs through direct contact with infected animals or inhalation of contaminated aerosols. Although it is a notifiable disease in the European Union for both humans and certain animal species, the actual incidence is likely underestimated due to the non-specific nature of clinical symptoms. Domestic ruminants are considered the main reservoirs of C. burnetii, placing farmers and veterinarians at incre

A participatory rapid ethnographic assessment protocol for studying human-animal-material interactions in veterinary clinical practice.

Veterinary clinical practice involves complex interactions among clinicians, learners, clients, animals, material objects, and built environments. These interactions shape how care is delivered, how students learn, and how practitioners respond to changing circumstances in real time. However, existing qualitative and ethnographic methods often lack a replicable protocol for capturing how human, animal, and material contributions jointly shape clinical practice as it unfolds. This methodology article presents a participatory Rapid Ethnographic Assessment protocol designed for veterinary educato

First case report of neurobrucellosis associated with hydrocephalus.

Brucellosis is a common zoonosis in many parts of the world, including Mediterranean and Middle Eastern countries. The disease is primarily related to occupations at risk, such as veterinarians, farmers, laboratory technicians, abattoir workers, and others working with animals and their products. Neurologic complications of brucellosis are quite rare, ranging from 1.7 to 10% of those infected. To date, no cases of neurobrucellosis with hydrocephalus have been reported. A 38-year-old right-handed farmer complained of headaches, nausea, vomiting, gait disturbance, and sweating for 2 days. He als

[Unanticipated outbreak of Q fever during a study using sheep, and its significance for further projects].

Effective measures for protection of laboratory staff against infections due to experiments with pathogens are a challenge for safeguarding against hazards. Investigations on limited epidemic infections and their causes are of high relevance. During an experiment with pregnant sheep 5 of 7 persons who took part in the operation procedures developed Q fever 10 to 24 days after exposure. One sheep aborted spontaneously 3 days after the third experiment. Examinations of the aborted material revealed Coxiella burnetii, Chlamydophila psittaci, and Staphylococcus chromogenes. Coxiella burnetii and C
