CT findings of gastric and intestinal anisakiasis.

PURPOSE: To illustrate the CT findings of gastrointestinal anisakiasis. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The Institutional Review Board approving this retrospective study waived the requirement for informed consent. Review of our emergency department's clinical records from September 2008 to January 2012 identified 41 consecutive patients who were diagnosed with gastrointestinal anisakiasis. 20 patients were diagnosed with gastric anisakiasis with endoscopically proven Anisakis larvae, and 21 patients were diagnosed with intestinal anisakiasis with positive test results for anti-anisakidae antibody and …

A case of duodenal anisakiasis with duodenal ulcer.

Humans can be incidentally parasitized by third-stage larvae of Anisakis species following the ingestion of raw or undercooked seafood. Acute gastric anisakiasis is one of the most frequently encountered complaints in Korea. However, duodenal anisakiasis with duodenal ulcer had not been reported in Korea, despite the habit of eating raw fish. In this case, a 47-year-old man was hospitalized because of sharp epigastric pain and repeated vomiting after eating raw fish 3 days previously. On admission, esophagogastroduodenoscopic examination revealed an active duodenal bulb ulcer. At 5 mm away fro…

Immune reactions and allergy in experimental anisakiasis.

The third-stage larvae (L3) of the parasitic nematode, Anisakis simplex, have been implicated in the induction of hyperimmune allergic react … mals may constitute a good model system for further exploration of immune mechanisms and allergy in anisakiasis of humans.

Asymptomatic gastroduodenal anisakiasis as the cause of anaphylaxis.

A great number of parasites have been reported in fish, but only a few of them are capable of infecting human beings. Anisakiasis or anisakidosis is caused by sea nematodes of the genus Anisakis, with the main implicated species being Anisakis simplex. Infection with Anisakis causes a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations, ranging from symptoms related to the upper and occasionally lower digestive tract to allergic manifestations, mainly urticaria and anaphylaxis. We report a case of asymptomatic gastroduodenal anisakiasis presenting as severe anaphylaxis.

[A new case of gastric and peritoneal anisakiasis].

A further case of anisakiasis is reported, its originality residing in the discovery of two localizations of the affection, gastric and then peritoneal, at four months' interval. This digestive disease is provoked by the larvae of nematodes that are parasites of marine mammals and for which human contamination is due to ingestion of raw or incompletely smoked fish.

Human and experimental anisakiasis in the United States.

In the past 13 years, 24 cases of anisakiasis have been reported in the United States. Of these, 14 were infections by Phocanema sp. and found in California and Alaska, and most were of the tissue non-invasive type. The remaining 10 cases were infections by larvae of anisakis type I (L3 and L4). Of these 10 cases, 4 were found on the west coast, 5 were on the east coast and one was in Hawaii. In 3 of the 10 cases, the parasite invaded the digestive tract. A characteristic symptom of the throat named "tingling throat" was manifested in 16 of the 24 cases, and this symptom was found to be due to…

Anisakiasis in the Upper Esophagus: A Case Report.

Anisakiasis is caused by consuming raw fish contaminated with Anisakis sp. larvae and is extremely rare, especially when originating in the esophagus. We present a case of esophageal anisakiasis in a 61-year-old male who experienced severe precordial pain and radiating discomfort to the neck after consuming raw fish sashimi. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed the presence of a larva in the upper esophagus. On the basis of anatomo-morphological features, the worm was provisionally identified as Anisakis sp. and was easily extracted with forceps, which led to a prompt improvement in the p…

Anisakiasis of the Terminal Ileum Removed by Colonoscopy.

A 35-year-old Japanese man with no significant medical history presented to the emergency department complaining of abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting 35 h after ingesting raw horse mackerel, sardines, and tuna. Computed tomography of the abdomen with intravenous contrast revealed significant thickening of the terminal ileum with mild proximal dilatation and moderate ascites. On colonoscopy, an actively moving anisakis larva was discovered in the terminal ileum. The larva was removed with endoscopic forceps. The patient's symptoms resolved quickly following the procedure.

First case of human anisakiasis in Poland.

Consumption of raw or inadequately processed marine fish may result in anisakidosis - a zoonotic disease caused by larvae of the parasitic nematodes of the family Anisakidae (anisakiasis when caused by members of the genus Anisakis (Nematoda: Anisakidae)), commonly found in a variety of marine fish species all over the world. Most cases of anisakidosis have been detected in the residents of Japan and South Korea, which results from the tradition of eating raw and semi-raw fish dishes. However, the disease is now increasingly often diagnosed in other parts of the world, including Europe (mainly…
