Macrocyclic lactone anthelmintics are widely used to control invertebrate pests in livestock, such as sheep. While anthelmintic effects on non-target animals, such as dung-dwelling insects, are well studied, effects on seed germination are largely unknown. Seeds can come into contact with anthelmintics either during passage through the gastro-intestinal tract of grazing animals or when anthelmintics are excreted with their dung into the environment, which may result in changed germination patterns. We used four commonly applied macrocyclic lactones to assess their effects on germination: moxid…

The in vitro-grown parasitic stages of Cooperia punctata were used to evaluate 28 compounds with different kinds and degrees of in vivo activity. Using presumptive and confirmatory tests, it was possible to establish a group order of in vitro potency that compared favorably with an order based on established in vivo use of these compounds. The procedure lends itself to evaluating activity against a given parasitic growth stage and gives a quantitative estimate (range) of the concentration that produces 50% nematode kill. The system was most successful in detecting compounds with in vivo activi

BACKGROUND: The highland community of Napu in Poso Regency, Central Sulawesi, possesses unique traditional and supernatural knowledge and practices for managing helminthiasis, locally known as Kekaindoro. Helminthiasis is considered a dangerous condition, even though it does not directly cause death.
AIM: This study aimed to explore the community's understanding of helminthiasis, their use of medicinal plants (MPs), and perceptions of the efficacy of these treatments.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study design was employed, with data collected through in-depth interviews. Qualitative ethnomedic

Bacillus thuringiensis crystal (Cry) proteins have been expressed in commercial transgenic crops for nearly 30 years, providing safe and effective control of insect pests and significantly reducing the application of hazardous chemical pesticides. B. thuringiensis crystal proteins have also been shown to target parasitic nematodes, including plant parasitic nematodes. Recently, transgenic soybean crops expressing Cry14Ab have been shown to provide control against the soybean cyst nematode Heterodera glycines, marking the first time a crystal protein is being commercialized in transgenic crops

Ailments caused by helminth parasites are global causing different types of clinical complications with permanent and long term morbidity in humans. Although huge advances have been made in medical sciences the effectiveness of available anthelmintics are still quite limited. Starting from the 50's, most importance was given to synthetic compounds for developing remedies from them, however, the traditional knowledge of medicine of different countries continued to provide us clues against this widespread health problem. Natural products or structural analogs with diverse structures are always b…

There is a need for standardised guidelines for evaluating the efficacy of anthelmintics against porcine cysticercosis, and more efficacy studies are needed since the conclusions so far are based on a limited number of studies using few infected pigs.

The reports deals with the results of testing seven new antihelminthics for Fasciola hepatica in the experimentally invaded Wistar rat. The greatest influence on juvenile flukes (2 and 4 weeks of age) was exerted by diamphenetid (Coriban) applied in a single dose of 100 mg kg-1. Hexachlorophene applied in the dose of 50 mg kg-1 showed the highest effect on sexually mature flukes. All the tested antihelminthics of the halogenated salicylanilide group were ineffective on juvenile stages and only slightly effective on mature F. hepatica flukes. It follows from the results that the effectiveness o

Helminths or Parasitic worms of humans may cause chronic and sometimes deadly diseases, considered as neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) that infect around two billion people worldwide. Plants have been used as anthelmintics from ancient times. This review is a compilation of plants as source of anthelmintic drug. All information presented in this review article regarding the anthelmintic activities of plants from 2005 and has been acquired by approaching various electronic databases, including Scopus, Google scholar, Web of science and PubMed. Literature was surveyed for anthelmintic activity…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The anthelmintic drug praziquantel has been used as a standard treatment for schistosomiasis for over 40 years. This study aimed to repurpose praziquantel to treat psoriasis.
EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Psoriasis-like skin inflammation was induced in mice (C57 and Balb/C) by topical application of imiquimod or intradermal injection of recombinant IL-23. Praziquantel was either orally or topically administered during the psoriasis induction period.
KEY RESULTS: Mice treated with either oral or topical praziquantel exhibited markedly improved psoriasiform skin symptoms when

Here we tell the story of ivermectin, describing its anthelmintic and insecticidal actions and recent studies that have sought to reposition ivermectin for the treatment of other diseases that are not caused by helminth and insect parasites. The standard theory of its anthelmintic and insecticidal mode of action is that it is a selective positive allosteric modulator of glutamate-gated chloride channels found in nematodes and insects. At higher concentrations, ivermectin also acts as an allosteric modulator of ion channels found in host central nervous systems. In addition, in tissue culture,

Anthelmintic resistance is a threat to global food security. In order to alleviate the selection pressure for resistance and maintain drug efficacy, management strategies increasingly aim to preserve a proportion of the parasite population in 'refugia', unexposed to treatment. While persuasive in its logic, and widely advocated as best practice, evidence for the ability of refugia-based approaches to slow the development of drug resistance in parasitic helminths is currently limited. Moreover, the conditions needed for refugia to work, or how transferable those are between parasite-host system
