Settlement patterns of the coral Acropora millepora on sediment-laden surfaces.

Successful recruitment in corals is important for the sustenance of coral reefs, and is considered a demographic bottleneck in the recovery of reef populations following disturbance events. Yet several factors influence larval settlement behaviour, and here we quantified thresholds associated with light attenuation and accumulated sediments on settlement substrates. Sediments deposited on calcareous red algae (CRA) directly and indirectly impacted coral settlement patterns. Although not avoiding direct contact, Acropora millepora larvae were very reluctant to settle on surfaces layered with se

Coral diseases near Lee Stocking Island, Bahamas: patterns and potential drivers.

The number of coral diseases, coral species they infect, number of reported cases, and range over which these diseases are distributed have all increased dramatically in the past 3 decades, posing a serious threat to coral reef ecosystems worldwide. While some published studies provide data on the distribution of coral diseases at local and regional levels, few studies have addressed the factors that may drive these distributions. We recorded coral disease occurrence, prevalence, and severity along with temperature, sedimentation, and coral population data (species abundance and colony size) o

Coral stone landscape and pterygia; is there an association?

The author examined 753 adults from 5 atolls that form a part of "Outer Islands" region of Republic of Marshall Islands (RMI), during his supervisory tour (July -Nov 2002); the visit aimed at providing primary health care services to the communities of outer islands region. Only the pterygia are highlighted in the following text. Each individual had a detailed interrogation followed by physical examination and glucometer assay of fasting blood. The dominant ocular pathologies included pterygia (14.5%), cataract (12%) and aphakia (1.5%). Of these 109 cases of clinically asymptomatic pterygia, 9

Antioxidant and Phytoplankton-Enriched Microparticle Diets Mitigate Thermal Stress in the Reef-Building Coral Stylophora pistillata.

The global coral crisis continues to intensify the urgent need for conservation and restoration interventions. Heatwaves are the primary driver of coral declines, triggering coral bleaching by disrupting the symbiosis with the dinoflagellates that provide corals with essential nutrients and energy. Since oxidative stress and nutrient disruption are key processes associated with coral bleaching, we developed a novel, low-cost bioengineering approach to deliver antioxidant support to corals. We used the reef-building model coral Stylophora pistillata to test microparticle feeds containing antiox

Coral-associated denitrification is seasonally variable and species-specific.

Nitrogen (N) plays a critical role in coral growth, but maintaining an N-limited state is essential for coral-algal symbiosis stability. Coral-associated denitrifiers may help regulate excess N, though denitrification in corals remains poorly quantified. To better understand species-specific and environmental effects on the denitrification pathway, we investigated year-long denitrification dynamics in four Red Sea corals, using acetylene inhibition assays alongside physiological and environmental measurements. All species exhibited measurable denitrification activity, ranging from 0 - 0.8 nmol

Stronger Together: Isograft Fusion Accelerates Recovery and May Facilitate Heat-Evolved Symbiont Transmission in Bleached Adult Corals.

Experimentally evolved, heat-tolerant algal symbionts (heat-evolved; HE) offer a promising means of enhancing coral holobiont thermotolerance under warming oceans. However, translating their benefits into restoration practices requires scalable delivery methods. Coral tissue fusion may provide one such pathway by facilitating HE symbiont transfer to wild corals; however, its feasibility remains largely untested. As an initial test, we paired adult isografts of Galaxea fascicularis and Psammocora columna hosting HE Cladocopium proliferum (SS8) with chemically bleached, SS8-naive recipients. Fus

Reducing consumer pressure increases community dissimilarity leading to coral- or algal-dominance on a coral reef.

In many ecosystems, anthropogenic influences are altering the strength of top-down (e.g., herbivory and predation by consumers) and bottom-up (e.g., nutrients) processes through the exploitation of consumers and increasing anthropogenic nutrient inputs. Altered top-down and bottom-up processes may significantly change ecological communities, resulting in shifts in the abundance or composition of primary producers, or shifts in ecosystem states. An often-overlooked consequence of altered top-down and bottom-up process is how these forces shape community variability, especially following disturb

Microbial pollution disables the chemical defenses of sea fans.

In coastal ecosystems, chemically rich species like gorgonians rely on specialized metabolites and symbiotic microbes for health and defense. In the Southwestern Atlantic, the elephant ear coral Phyllogorgia dilatata builds structurally complex forests and provides habitat for several species. Recent declines in cover have been linked to widespread disease, fouling, and necrosis. The loss of chemical defense due to anthropic perturbation has never been reported in the marine environment. We investigated whether pollution-driven stress could lead to a dysfunctional holobiont and impairment of i

Holding time or fixative formulation has no obvious effect on histology of Porites evermanni and Montipora capitata.

Collection of coral for histologic examination requires holding of samples in seawater for a time before they are fixed for histologic processing. This could adversely affect the interpretation of morphologic changes during histologic examinations. We evaluated the microscopic morphology of Porites evermanni and Montipora capitata held (0-120 minutes) in seawater prior to fixation in Z-Fix formulated with raw or artificial seawater. We saw no evident effects of treatments on microscopic morphology. However, among 88 statistical comparisons, and after accounting for false discovery rate, holdin

Diversity and dynamics of multiple symbionts contribute to early development of broadcast spawning reef-building coral Dipsastraea veroni.

Sexual reproduction and recruitment enhance the genetic diversity and evolution of reef-building corals for population recovery and coral reef conservation under climate change. However, new recruits are vulnerable to physical changes and the mechanisms of symbiosis establishment remain poorly understood. Here, Dipsastraea veroni, a broadcast spawning hermaphrodite reef-building coral, was subjected to settlement and juvenile growth in flow-through in situ seawater at 27.93 ± 0.96°C. Symbiosis of Symbiodiniaceae, bacteria, and/or archaea by horizontal acquisition and/or hypothetical vertical t

Robustness of gametogenesis in the scleractinian coral, Tubastraea aurea, in the shallow-water hydrothermal vent field off Kueishan Island, northeastern Taiwan.

Understanding the reproductive resiliency of scleractinian corals is imperative as ocean acidification and rising sea surface temperatures threaten the foundation of coral reef ecosystems. However, the limited temporal scales of laboratory and transplantation-based methods fail to consider evolutionary time frames offered by natural analogues of future climate conditions, like hydrothermal vents (HV). Accordingly, we characterized the presence of scleractinians surrounding a major shallow-water HV near Kueishan Island in northeastern Taiwan, identified a candidate species, Tubastraea aurea, an

Different impact of a severe storm on two gorgonian species.

Extreme events influence ecosystem dynamics, but their effects on coastal marine habitats are often poorly perceived compared to their terrestrial counterparts. The detailed study of changes in benthic communities related to these phenomena is becoming urgent, due to the increasing intensity and frequency of hurricanes recorded in recent decades. Slow-growing benthic sessile organisms are particularly vulnerable to mechanical impacts, especially the large long-lived species with branched morphology that structure Mediterranean coralligenous assemblages. The present study evaluates the effects

Do cold water corals provide an essential habitat for Helicolenus dactylopterus (Delaroche, 1809) in the Northwest Africa?

Cold water corals (CWC) provide habitats for many organisms including demersal fish. Bottom trawl observations have indicated a co-occurrence of the fish Helicolenus dactylopterus with CWC reefs, but a detailed understanding of this relation is lacking. To better understand the nature of this relation we have analyzed 85 video-lines from ROV dives conducted at 25-1700 m depth off Morocco, Mauritania, and Senegal in 2020 and 2021. We annotated abundance, size, and behavior of the 552 specimens observed (32% juveniles and 68% adults), of these 82% occurred in CWC habitats at 400-600 m depth. Bot

Daily accumulation rates of floating debris and attached biota on continental and oceanic island shores in the SE Pacific: testing predictions based on global models.

BACKGROUND: Long-distance rafting on anthropogenic marine debris (AMD) is thought to have a significant impact on global marine biogeography and the dispersal of non-indigenous species. Therefore, early identification of arrival sites of AMD and its epibionts is crucial for the prioritization of preventive measures. As accumulation patterns along global coastlines are largely unstudied, we tested if existing oceanographic models and knowledge about upstream sources of litter and epibionts can be used as a simple and cost-efficient approach for predicting probable arrival sites of AMD-rafting b

Underwater Impact and Intention-Behaviour Gap of Scuba Divers on Coral Communities in Hong Kong SAR, China.

Recreational diving, under the continual growth of the scuba diving industry, may escalate coral reef damage as one of the substantial anthropogenic impacts and is of pressing concern. Besides unregulated and excessive diving activities, accidental contact with corals by inexperienced divers can cause recurring physical damage and heighten the pressure on coral communities. Understanding the ecological impacts of underwater contact with marine biota will thus be crucial to develop more sustainable scuba diving practices in Hong Kong. To probe the scuba diving impacts of divers' contact with co

Effects of elevated temperature and copper exposure on the physiological state of the coral Galaxea fascicularis.

The co-occurrence of elevated seawater temperature and local stressors (heavy metal contamination) affects the ecophysiology of phototrophic species, and represents a risk to the environmental quality of coral reefs. Therefore, we investigated the effects of both Cu alone and Cu in combination with elevated temperature (ET) on the physiology of the coral Galaxea fascicularis, and measured the parameters related to the photo-physiology and oxidative state. G.fascicularis is one of the dominant coral species in the South China Sea which exhibits strong adaptability to environmental stress. We ex

Genetic variation in released gametes produces genetic diversity in the offspring of the broadcast spawning coral Acropora tenuis.

All coral species in the genus Acropora are broadcast-spawning hermaphrodites. Fertilization in the ocean requires sufficient numbers of gametes from conspecifics and the contact time for fertilization is thought to be limited by the rapid diffusion of sperm. Many studies have reported a positive correlation between sperm concentration and fertilization success, but it is not clear how gametes diffuse in seawater to produce mixtures of gametes from many colonies, leading to fertilization that improves genetic diversity. To elucidate this, we analyzed the changes in sperm concentration of A. te

Coral and Seawater Metagenomes Reveal Key Microbial Functions to Coral Health and Ecosystem Functioning Shaped at Reef Scale.

The coral holobiont is comprised of a highly diverse microbial community that provides key services to corals such as protection against pathogens and nutrient cycling. The coral surface mucus layer (SML) microbiome is very sensitive to external changes, as it constitutes the direct interface between the coral host and the environment. Here, we investigate whether the bacterial taxonomic and functional profiles in the coral SML are shaped by the local reef zone and explore their role in coral health and ecosystem functioning. The analysis was conducted using metagenomes and metagenome-assemble

Coral reef carnivorous fish biomass relates to oceanographic features depending on habitat and prey preference.

Carnivorous fish are a key part of the Indonesian human population sustenance, and it is important to design marine protected areas that include environmental features that allow these species to thrive. Many studies report the role of coral cover and habitat complexity in determining fish distribution on coral reefs but broader environmental factors such as current velocity and productivity are less studied. Southern Indonesia is characterised by upwellings and strong currents, stemming from the tidal cycle and the Indonesian Throughflow. In this study we investigate how current velocity, chl

Divergent expression of hypoxia response systems under deoxygenation in reef-forming corals aligns with bleaching susceptibility.

Exposure of marine life to low oxygen is accelerating worldwide via climate change and localized pollution. Mass coral bleaching and mortality have recently occurred where reefs have experienced chronic low oxygen events. However, the mechanistic basis of tolerance to oxygen levels inadequate to sustain normal functioning (i.e. hypoxia) and whether it contributes to bleaching susceptibility, remain unknown. We therefore experimentally exposed colonies of the environmentally resilient Acropora tenuis, a common reef-building coral from the Great Barrier Reef, to deoxygenation-reoxygenation stres
