Associations of anthropogenic activity and tributaries with the physicochemical, nutrient and microbial composition of the Ganga (Ganges) River, India.

The Ganga River (known internationally as the Ganges) is one of the world's most prominent rivers, running from the Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal and supporting the livelihoods of > 40 % of India's 1.4 billion population. The Ganga River is regionally and globally important, supporting agriculture and industry, yet faces potentially detrimental water quality challenges arising from runoff and discharge from increasing urbanization, industry and agriculture. A ∼ 2700 km longitudinal survey of the nutrient and microbial water quality, including phytoplankton composition, of the Ganga River was

Direct hearing measurements in a baleen whale suggest ultrasonic sensitivity.

Predicting and mitigating the impacts of anthropogenic ocean noise on marine animals is hindered by a lack of information on hearing in these species. We established a catch-and-release program to temporarily hold adolescent minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) for hearing tests during their summer migration. In 2023, two minke whales provided measures of the auditory brainstem response and data on the frequency range of their hearing. Results show that minke whales are sensitive to sound frequencies as high as 45 to 90 kilohertz. These tests provide information on the types of anthropoge

Relationship between water quality, heavy metals and antibiotic resistance genes among three freshwater lakes.

Urban recreational lakes are impacted by consistent anthropogenic activities and are significant sources of heavy metals and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). In this study, three urban lakes of varying size and anthropogenic impact in Nanjing, China, were investigated for the abundance of ten ARGs, six physicochemical factors and four heavy metals. Correlations between heavy metals and physicochemical parameters against ARGs were performed to investigate the presence of ARGs in the lakes. The water quality data indicated that the lakes were on par with levels 3 and 4 of the Chinese surface

Study of antibiotic resistance in freshwater ecosystems with low anthropogenic impact.

This study aimed to investigate the bacterial diversity and the background level of antibiotic resistance in two freshwater ecosystems with low anthropogenic impact in order to evaluate the presence of natural antimicrobial resistance in these areas and its potential to spread downstream. Water samples from a pre-Alpine and an Apennine river (Variola and Tiber, respectively) were collected in three different sampling campaigns and bacterial diversity was assessed by 16S sequencing, while the presence of bacteria resistant to five antibiotics was screened using a culturable approach. Overall ba

Assessing recent anthropogenic carbon dioxide and acidification in the Ross Sea, Antarctica.

Over the past decade, the East Ross Sea has experienced a significant decline in sea ice, enabling direct observational studies of regional carbon dynamics. The accumulation rate of anthropogenic CO2 in the East Ross Sea is up to six times higher than the long-term Industrial Era mean due to the inflow of seawater from the Amundsen Sea by accelerated glacial melting. In contrast, the West Ross Sea exhibited comparatively smaller changes. Measurements of dissolved inorganic carbon and stable carbon isotope indicate that, over the period 2011-2020, changes in δ13C (Suess effect) and anthropogeni

Anthropogenic activities enhance mercury methylation in sediments of a multifunctional lake: Evidence from dissolved organic matter and mercury-methylating microorganisms.

Multifunctional lakes are highly susceptible to anthropogenic influences, potentially introducing exogenous pollutants or nutrients into aquatic sediments. This, in turn, affects the mercury (Hg) methylation in the sediments. This study was conducted in the Changshou Lake, a representative multifunctional lake in southwestern China, with a specific focus on investigating the Hg variations, the potential of Hg methylation, and the influential factors affecting the methylation process within sediments across different functional areas. The results revealed significant variations in total Hg conc

Longitudinal wastewater metagenomics reveals distinct environmental and anthropogenic associations with resistance, virulence, and viral communities.

Urban wastewater systems are reservoirs of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) and virulence factor genes (VFGs), increasingly recognized as emerging environmental pollutants. However, longitudinal evidence linking tourism-related human mobility to its dynamics remains limited in the Southern Hemisphere. We evaluated whether tourism seasonality, used as a proxy for transient population load, is associated with changes in the wastewater resistome, virulome, and virome in Natal (Northeast Brazil). Using year-long shotgun metagenomics (June 2021-May 2022) of 24 monthly pooled metagenomes (12 co

Combined use of stable isotopes and heavy metal analysis of Microlophus atacamensis reveals anthropogenic impacts in the coastal upwelling zone, Northern Chile.

This study evaluates the utility of the tail of the lizard Microlophus atacamensis as a biomonitor for assessing variation in heavy metals contamination (lead, copper, nickel, zinc and cadmium) using non- or minimally invasive methods that do not require sacrificing animals. Sampling was conducted at three coastal sites in Antofagasta (Atacama Desert) that differ in the degree of human impact. Three matrices were analyzed: soil, lizard tails (biological tissue) and the lizard putative prey. Lizard trophic ecology was characterized using stomach contents and the longer-term stable isotope ratio

Application of equilibrium passive sampling to assess the influence of anthropogenic activities and bioturbation on the distribution of hydrophobic organic chemicals in North Sea sediment cores.

The pollution state in the German Bight was investigated by determination of pollutant concentrations of sediment samples using equilibrium passive sampling. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were determined in the pore water of North Sea sediment. The freely dissolved pore water concentration (Cfree) was measured applying Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME) by using PDMS-coated glass fibers. The obtained results show that the North Sea contamination level with the investigated pollutants is relatively low. However, the stations close to the sediment-du

An overview of fish bioacoustics and the impacts of anthropogenic sounds on fishes.

Fishes use a variety of sensory systems to learn about their environments and to communicate. Of the various senses, hearing plays a particularly important role for fishes in providing information, often from great distances, from all around these animals. This information is in all three spatial dimensions, often overcoming the limitations of other senses such as vision, touch, taste and smell. Sound is used for communication between fishes, mating behaviour, the detection of prey and predators, orientation and migration and habitat selection. Thus, anything that interferes with the ability o

Impact of Anthropogenic Activities on the Dissemination of ARGs in the Environment-A Review.

Over the past few decades, due to the excessive consumption of drugs in human and veterinary medicine, the antimicrobial resistance (AR) of microorganisms has risen considerably across the world, and this trend is predicted to intensify. Many worrying research results indicate the occurrence of pools of AR, both directly related to human activity and environmental factors. The increase of AR in the natural environment is mainly associated with the anthropogenic activity. The dissemination of AR is significantly stimulated by the operation of municipal facilities, such as wastewater treatment p

The impact of COVID-19 on urban PM2.5 -taking Hubei Province as an example.

In January 2020, China implemented strict lockdown measures due to the invasion of the new coronavirus, which led to a sharp decline in the contribution of anthropogenic fine particulate matter (PM2.5). The special period of COVID-19, especially in Hubei where the epidemic was the most severe, provides excellent research conditions for studying the contribution of anthropogenic activities to PM2.5 concentrations. We used an optimized deep learning model to predict PM2.5 concentration during the epidemic period in the cities of Hubei Province. The contributions of local anthropogenic activities

Monsoon-driven nutrient pollution assessment and source tracking in tropical mountain headwaters using positive matrix factorisation.

Tropical mountain ecosystems, driven by monsoonal hydrology and escalating land use, are highly vulnerable to nutrient enrichment, which threatens downstream water quality. This study investigates the spatiotemporal variability and quantitative source apportionment of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), phosphorus (DIP), and silica (DSi) across surface water and groundwater in the Munnar Critical Zone Observatory (CZO), Western Ghats, India. Seasonal monitoring over three monsoon cycles revealed extremely elevated DIN/DIP ratios (up to 299:1), indicating severe phosphorus (P) limitation, refle

Characteristics of fluoride migration and enrichment in groundwater under the influence of natural background and anthropogenic activities.

Excessive enrichment of fluoride threatens ecological stability and human health. The high-fluoride groundwater in the Chagan Lake area has existed for a long time. With the land consolidation and irrigation area construction, the distribution and migration process of fluoride have changed. It is urgent to explore the evolution of fluoride under the dual effects of nature and human. Based on 107 groundwater samples collected in different land use periods, hydrogeochemistry and isotope methods were combined to explore the evolution characteristics and hydrogeochemical processes of fluoride in t

Human occupation, not forest structure, determines sand fly abundance in the Amazon.

BACKGROUND: Across Amazonian deforestation frontiers, phlebotomine sand flies transmit Leishmania spp., the causative agents of American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL). Landscape modification can alter vector ecology and transmission risk, yet the relative roles of forest cover, landscape configuration, and deforestation timeline remain poorly understood. We evaluated how landscape composition and configuration, assessed across multiple spatial scales, and deforestation timeline influence sand fly abundance and Leishmania infection in Cruzeiro do Sul, Acre, Brazil. METHODS: Sand flies were col

Multi-scaled response of groundwater nitrate contamination to integrated anthropogenic activities in a rapidly urbanizing agricultural catchment.

Anthropogenic activities have a significant contribution to groundwater nitrate contamination at multiple spatial scales in urbanizing agricultural catchments, while how to derive the optimal researching scale and explore the relative importance among anthropogenic activities for groundwater nitrate contamination still remains challenging. In this study, 165 perched groundwater and 120 shallow groundwater samples were collected in two urbanizing agricultural catchments, to explore anthropogenic activity effects on groundwater nitrate contamination crossing multiple spatial scales, integrating

Ecological forensic testing: Using multiple primers for eDNA detection of marine vertebrates in an estuarine lagoon subject to anthropogenic influences.

Many critical aquatic habitats are in close proximity to human activity (i.e., adjacent to residences, docks, marinas, etc.), and it is vital to monitor biodiversity in these and similar areas that are subject to ongoing urbanization, pollution, and other environmental disruptions. Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding is an accessible, non-invasive genetic technique used to detect and monitor species diversity and is a particularly useful approach in areas where traditional biodiversity monitoring methods (e.g., visual surveys or video surveillance) are challenging to conduct. In this study,
