Leishmaniasis is a disease caused by Leishmania species and transmitted via sandflies. Current control strategies against reservoir hosts and vectors are not eco-friendly. Intralesional injection of pentavalent antimonials is a recommended treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). We describe an allergic response to meglumine antimoniate after intralesional treatment of a CL lesion. INTRODUCTION:: Intralesional treatment for cutaneous leishmaniasis has been applied for over 30 years at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, Rio de Janeiro, with good therapeutic results and without relevant systemic toxicity.
METHODS: Meglumine antimoniate was injected subcutaneously, using a long medium-caliber needle (for example, 30mm × 0.8mm); patients received 1-3 injections, with 15-day intervals.
RESULTS: The technique is described in detail sufficient to enable replication.

Pentamidine was compared with meglumine antimoniate (Glucantime) for 80 patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis due to Leishmania braziliensis in Peru. Data on the efficacy and safety of pentavalent antimony in the treatment of visceral leishmaniasis during pregnancy are scanty. A case of visceral leishmaniasis in a 39-year-old woman in the second trimester of pregnancy is reported here.
