The Brazilian contribution to ant toxinology: challenges and perspectives.

Ant toxinology in Brazil is a small but growing field that has revealed wide biochemical diversity and clear potential for bioprospecting therapeutic molecules. This review compiles the Brazilian contribution, focusing on advances in the characterization of venoms from medically and ecologically important species of Dinoponera, Solenopsis, Paraponera, Pachycondyla, Neoponera, and Ectatomma. Brazilian groups applied omics approaches, including transcriptomics and proteomics, to resolve the composition of these venoms and identified peptide-rich arsenals with antimicrobial, antiparasitic, antitu

Ocular Injury Caused by the Asian Weaver Ant.

This report presents a rare case of ocular injury caused by an Asian weaver ant (Oecophylla smaragdina) in a 29-year-old male. The patient sustained a direct ant bite to the conjunctiva, with the ant's mandibles deeply embedded in the tissue. The unique clinical presentation and subsequent surgical removal of the ant en bloc with surrounding conjunctival tissue are described. Postoperative management with topical antibiotics, topical steroids, and oral antibiotics resulted in complete recovery without visual impairment. This case underscores the importance of meticulous foreign body removal in

Stinging Ant Anaphylaxis: Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment.

Stinging ants represent a wide range of over 200 different species across the world, of which Solenopsis, Myrmecia, Pogonomyrmex, and Brachyponera genera account for a substantial economic and healthcare burden. S. invicta (red imported fire ant [IFA]) and M. pilosula (jack jumper ant [JJA]) are 2 species of high clinical importance, known to cause anaphylaxis in humans, with numerous reported fatalities. Diagnostic testing should be performed in patients with a history of a systemic reaction with skin testing and/or in vitro specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) testing. In vitro testing is commerc…

Effects of the Argentine ant venom on terrestrial amphibians.

Invasive species have major impacts on biodiversity and are one of the primary causes of amphibian decline and extinction. Unlike other top … L. humile on an ant trail. In the lab, when a juvenile amphibian came in contact with L. humile the ants reacted quickly to spray pygidial-gland venom onto the juveniles. Iridomyrmecin was the toxic compound in the spray. Following absorption, it accumulated in brain, kidney, and liver tissue. Toxic dose for amphibian was species dependent. Worldwide, …

Ant Lion Optimization algorithm for kidney exchanges.

The kidney exchange programs bring new insights in the field of organ transplantation. They make the previously not allowed surgery of incompatible patient-donor pairs easier to be performed on a large scale. Mathematically, the kidney exchange is an optimization problem for the number of possible exchanges among the incompatible pairs in a given pool. Also, the optimization modeling should consider the expected quality-adjusted life of transplant candidates and the shortage of computational and operational hospital resources. In this article, we introduce a bio-inspired stochastic-based Ant L

Weaver ant role in cashew orchards in Vietnam.

Cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) is a very important source of income for more than 200,000 farmer households in Vietnam. The present cashew productivity in Vietnam is low and unstable, and pest damage is partly responsible for this. Cashew farmers rely on pesticides to minimize the damage, resulting in adverse impacts on farm environment and farmers' health. Weaver ants (Oecophylla spp) are effective biocontrol agents of a range of cashew insect pests in several cashew-growing countries, and these ants are widely distributed in Vietnam. The aim of this study is to evaluate the potential of …

Anaphylaxis to weaver ant eggs: a case report.

The weaver ants (Oecophyllas maragdina), the tropical ants commonly found in Asia and Australia, can produce eggs which become the expensive delicacies for Thai people especially in the northern and northeastern part of Thailand. Anaphylactic reaction can occur from the most common triggers of ingested foods and drugs. Some hidden and newly recognized foods are now described as the triggers of anaphylaxis. This is the case report of anaphylaxis to the weaver ant eggs of after ingesting them for 2 hours and produced anaphylactic reactions, including generalized urticaria, angioedema, wheezing a…

The organization of foraging in the fire ant, Solenopsis invicta.

Although natural selection in ants acts most strongly at the colony, or superorganismal level, foraging patterns have rarely been studied at that level, focusing instead on the behavior of individual foragers or groups of foragers. The experiments and observations in this paper reveal in broad strokes how colonies of the fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), allocate their available labor to foraging, how they disperse that force within their territory, and how this force changes with colony size, season and worker age. Territory area is positively related to colony siz…

Ant navigation: priming of visual route memories.

Ants travelling to and fro between their nest and a foraging area may follow stereotyped foodward and homeward routes that are guided by different visual and directional memory sequences. Honeybees are known to fly a feeder-to-hive or hive-to-feeder vector according to whether or not they have recently fed--their feeding state controls which compass direction they select. We show here that the feeding state of the wood ant Formica rufa also determines the choice between an outward or inward journey, but by priming the selective retrieval of visual landmark memories.

Evolution of male morphology in the ant genus Cardiocondyla.

The ant genus Cardiocondyla is characterized by a striking male polymorphism, with wingless, local fighter males (ergatoid males) with life-long spermatogenesis, and winged, peaceful disperser males with limited sperm supply. We examined the evolution of male morphology by reconstructing the phylogeny of Cardiocondyla from sequences of the mitochondrial COI/COII and 16S RNA genes from 13 of the 15 species, of which males are known. Data suggest that male polymorphism is ancestral and that winged males were lost convergently in several taxa, such as C. elegans, C. batesii, and C. mauritanica. S

Ante litteram description of atypical parkinsonian cases.

We have searched in the neurological literature for cases of atypical parkinsonism published before the epidemic encephalitis era. Some of these cases can be recognized. Therefore the epidemic encephalitis has no etiological importance in these clinical syndromes.

Ante-and postnatal evaluation of the Dandy-Walker syndrome.

In three cases an antenatal diagnosis of isolated Dandy-Walker cyst was made at 22-28 weeks of gestation by ultrasound examination. Biparietal growth and the relative severity of the anomaly remained constant, so that all cases could be safely delivered at term. Postnatally, the diagnosis was confirmed during the first days of life by ultrasound and computed tomography (CT). Early neonatal shunting procedures were performed. Dual shunts were inserted in all three cases, and mental and physical development were observed to be normal during a follow-up of from 1.5 to 4.5 years. Early antenatal d

Breaking trait scaling via the evolution and regulation of dimorphic decoupling in ants.

The evolution of allometry, changing how morphological traits scale to body size, has fueled adaptive radiations. In ants, allometry has facilitated the repeated evolution of a worker-soldier caste system. Here, we reveal an unexpected morphological pattern and its superorganismal regulation within the hyperdiverse genus Pheidole. We uncovered that antennal sizing between the small worker and the big soldier is identical, lacking intercaste scaling (antennae-body scaling is decoupled) yet retaining intracaste scaling. Furthermore, we have pinpointed the evolutionary origin of this decoupling. …

Context-dependent influence of path integration on nest plume following in desert ants.

The desert ant Cataglyphis fortis forages individually for dead arthropods in the Tunisian saltpans. Homing ants return to their nest by following a path integration (PI) derived home vector and finally pinpoint the nest entrance by tracking the nest's carbon dioxide plume. However, as long as PI tells the homing ant that it has not reached its nest's vicinity yet, plume following is inhibited. This avoids an ant entering foreign nests en route. If homing ants cannot find their nest, they begin a systematic search that results in the formation of a search-derived PI vector pointing toward the …

First Test of a Potential Biological Control Agent of Argentine ants (Linepithema humile).

The Argentine ant (Linepithema humile), listed among the world's 100 worst invasive alien species, is notoriously difficult to control due mainly to its formation of large, expansive supercolonies. Despite the drawbacks of chemical control, biological alternatives have not been previously explored for this species. In this study, we evaluated six native entomopathogenic fungal strains against Argentine ants from four behaviorally distinct supercolonies, identified through aggression assays and collected from both urban and natural sites within the species' native range. Ants were inoculated wi…
