Effects of prenatal exposure to methadone or buprenorphine and maternal separation on anxiety-like behavior in rats.

BACKGROUND: The use of medications for opioid use disorder such as methadone or buprenorphine is increasing among pregnant women. However, long-term effects of this treatment on the children's health are not well understood. A key challenge is distinguishing the effects of opioid exposure from other confounding factors associated with human opioid use, such as reduced maternal care. In this study, we therefore used a multi-risk factor design to examine anxiety-like behavior in rats prenatally exposed to methadone or buprenorphine, with or without maternal separation the first two weeks after b

Trait rumination and social anxiety separately influence stress-induced rumination and hemodynamic responses.

We aimed to investigate stress-reactive rumination in response to social stress and its association with social anxiety and trait rumination. From previous investigations we know that people with a certain vulnerability to rumination show increased stress-reactive rumination. However, up to date the possible influence of social anxiety on this relationship is still unclear. Therefore, we reanalyzed the data of two of our previous studies assessing healthy low and high trait ruminators and depressed patients performing the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). We measured cortical oxygenation using

Do children separated from fathers have higher anxiety levels? A comparative analysis.

BACKGROUND: There is limited literature from India on effect of fathers' deployment on the mental health of children. This cross-sectional analytical study investigates the difference in anxiety levels of children whose fathers are deployed in a field location and compares it with children currently located with their fathers. METHOD: Data were collected in an army school from 200 children aged 10-17 years with fathers deployed in field locations (n = 99) and fathers currently residing with the children (n = 105) via interviewer administered and self-completed Screen for Child Anxiety-Related

Anxiety sensitivity: another reason to separate dental fears from blood-injury fears?

Although dental phobia is classified under the heading of blood-injury phobia, studies show differences between the two conditions in terms of frequency of fainting and gender distribution. Anxiety sensitivity (AS), which refers to discomfort and negative attributions to bodily anxiety sensations, was useful in differentiating panic anxiety from other phobic anxieties. No study has compared dental phobia with blood-injury phobia directly. We examined 61 subjects, working at a military aircraft factory, using measures on demographics, dental fears (MDAS - Modified Dental Anxiety Scale) and bloo

The Adult Separation Anxiety Questionnaire (ASA-27): reliability of the German translation, factor structure, and concurrent validity with anxiety sensitivity and agoraphobic cognition.

BACKGROUND: Separation anxiety disorder (SEPAD) is characterized by pronounced fear or anxiety concerning separation from attachment figures. Despite its high lifetime prevalence, adult SEPAD often remains undetected due to a lack of diagnostic tools in multiple languages. The Adult Separation Anxiety Questionnaire (ASA-27) is a key instrument for assessing symptoms of SEPAD in adults. However, no validated German version is available. OBJECTIVES: This study addressed the translation and validation of the ASA-27 in a German-speaking population to introduce the first German questionnaire asses

Responses to voluntary hyperventilation in children with separation anxiety disorder: implications for the link to panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Biological theories on respiratory regulation have linked separation anxiety disorder (SAD) to panic disorder (PD). We tested if SAD children show similarly increased anxious and psychophysiological responding to voluntary hyperventilation and compromised recovery thereafter as has been observed in PD patients. METHODS: Participants were 49 children (5-14 years old) with SAD, 21 clinical controls with other anxiety disorders, and 39 healthy controls. We assessed cardiac sympathetic and parasympathetic, respiratory (including pCO2), electrodermal, electromyographic, and self-report

The separate and interactive effects of drinking motives and social anxiety symptoms in predicting drinking outcomes.

PURPOSE: Our goal was to test the separate and interactive effects of drinking motives and social anxiety symptoms in predicting drinking-related consumption and problems. METHODS: Participants (N=730; 59.7% female) were undergraduate college students who completed measures of social anxiety symptoms, drinking motives, alcohol consumption, and drinking problems. RESULTS: Greater social anxiety symptoms were significantly associated with less alcohol consumption, and there was some evidence that greater social anxiety symptoms were also associated with greater alcohol-relevant problems. Comorbidity of dependent personality disorder and separation anxiety disorder in addictive disorders and in healthy subjects.

The aim of the study was to determine the comorbidity of dependent personality disorder (DPD) and separation anxiety disorder (SAD) in large nonclinical and clinical samples. Using a cross-sectional method, the relationship between these disorders was studied in 784 healthy subjects and in 708 subjects presenting with various addictive behaviors. DPD was significantly associated with SAD in healthy subjects, alcoholics, drug abusers and anorectic and bulimic patients. The comorbidities of SAD and DPD suggest that specific therapeutic strategies could be discussed. Moreover, longitudinal studie

Enriched environment alleviates adolescent visceral pain, anxiety- and depression-like behaviors induced by neonatal maternal separation.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal maternal separation (NMS), a major kind of early life stress, increases the risk of visceral pain, anxiety- and depression-like behaviors in adulthood. An enriched environment (EE) has been shown to successfully rescue the brain from various early life psychological stressors. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether NMS induces visceral pain, anxiety- and depression-like behaviors in adolescents and to evaluate the impact of EE in infancy on these symptoms. METHODS: Male C57BL/6 J mice that had been subjected to NMS were used in this study. The visceral pain th

The relationships among separation anxiety disorder, adult attachment style and agoraphobia in patients with panic disorder.

Epidemiological studies indicate that separation anxiety disorder occurs more frequently in adults than children. It is unclear whether the presence of adult separation anxiety disorder (ASAD) is a manifestation of anxious attachment, or a form of agoraphobia, or a specific condition with clinically significant consequences. We conducted a study to examine these questions. A sample of 141 adult outpatients with panic disorder participated in the study. Participants completed standardized measures of separation anxiety, attachment style, agoraphobia, panic disorder severity and quality of life.

Forced choice reaction time paradigm in children with separation anxiety disorder, social phobia, and nonanxious controls.

Cognitive distortions refer to cognitive processes that are biased and therefore yield dysfunctional and maladaptive products (e.g., interpretation bias). Automatic aspects of information processing need to be considered and investigating these aspects requires forms of assessment other than self-report. Studies focussing on the specificity of cognitive biases across different types of anxiety disorders in childhood are rare. Thus, a forced choice reaction time paradigm with picture stimuli was used to assess the interpretation bias in anxious children online. The study investigated disorder-s

Exploring childhood separation anxiety in resource-limited contexts: a mixed-methods study with children and caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Separation anxiety (SA) is a common childhood experience that, when persistent, can interfere with development and elevate the risk for future anxiety disorders. However, research on SA in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) remains scarce, especially among rural children with limited access to mental health services. We examined age and gender differences in SA scores among Colombian children from rural, low-income households, alongside caregivers’ experiences and strategies for managing their children’s anxiety. METHODS: We employed a sequential explanatory mixed-methods des

Neonatal maternal separation affects metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 expression and anxiety-related behavior of adult rats.

Exposure to early life stress leads to long-term neurochemical and behavioral alterations. Stress-induced psychiatric disorders, such as depression, have recently been linked to dysregulation of glutamate signaling, mainly via its postsynaptic receptors. The role of metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) in stress-induced psychopathology has been the target of several studies in humans. In rodents, blockade of mGluR5 produces antidepressant-like actions, whereas mice lacking mGluR5 exhibit altered anxiety-like behaviors and learning. In this study, we used well-known rodent models of early

Low-intensity energy shock wave therapy modulates bladder function and anxiety-like behavior in maternal separation rats.

AIMS: To investigate whether low-intensity energy shock wave therapy (LiESWT) applied to the bladder can alleviate maternal separation (MS)-induced lower urinary tract dysfunction and anxiety-like behavior in a rat model. METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rat pups were divided into normal, MS, and MS + LiESWT groups. MS was performed on postnatal days 2-14. At 6 weeks of age, the MS + LiESWT group received shock wave therapy (0.12 mJ/mm2, 2 Hz, 200 shocks per session, nine sessions) in the bladder region. At 9 weeks of age, all groups underwent anxiety-like behavior assessment using the elevated plus m

Recurrent nightmares, aggressive doll play, separation anxiety and witnessing domestic violence in a 9 year old girl.

Sarah is a 9 year old girl who was brought to her pediatrician with sleep difficulties and repetitive nightmares. Her mother reported that Sarah had problems falling asleep for several years with recurrent nightmares about her mother getting hurt. Sarah also had difficulties with separation from her mother and refused to sleep in her own bed. Sarah was described by her mother as "irritable with poor concentration," and easily startled. The mother denied any recent stressful events or changes in the home environment. The parents had been divorced for two years; there was a prior history of dome

Psychometric evaluation of separate anxiety and depression item banks - potential supplements to the EORTC CAT Core.

PURPOSE: The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer's computerized adaptive test instrument, the EORTC CAT Core, provides dynamic, individualised assessment across 14 health-related quality of life domains, including emotional functioning (EF), which encompasses anxiety and depression. When one of these symptoms is of primary interest, separate scores may better support clinical decision-making and increase measurement sensitivity. The aim here was to evaluate separate item banks for anxiety and depression as potential supplements to the EORTC CAT Core. METHODS: Responses

The Role of Maladaptive Behaviors and Adjustment Disorders in Linking Separation Anxiety to Depression in Primary School Students.

OBJECTIVE: Children who experience prolonged separation anxiety may develop "avoidance" patterns of emotional regulation that manifest in stressful behavioral responses. This study tests whether maladaptive habits and adjustment disorders mediate the link between separation anxiety and depression in primary school students. METHODS: In November 2022, we conducted a cross-sectional survey of 4474 students from elementary schools in Qionghai and Dongfang cities, Hainan Province, China, using stratified cluster sampling. Parents completed the Mental Health Rate Scale for Pupils. Data were analyz
