Vitreous fluorophotometry was performed on 63 patients undergoing cataract extraction. Pre- and postoperative studies demonstrated that this procedure always induces alterations in the blood-aqueous barrier. A correlation was found between the degree of this alteration and the frequency of cystoid macular edema.

Many different designs have been produced for aphakic power spectacle lenses. Two lenses are described which have a common design aim--to produce a lens of uncut diameter but reasonable cosmetic appearance and weight. These lenses both utilize a continuous aspheric surface on the front surface, which enables them to have a stabilized central power zone and a near plano peripheral flange, but without the disadvantages of the traditional lenticular construction.

Report on examinations of the retinal periphery with a three-mirror contact lens during the first year following cataract operation. Latent retinal defects found in six out of 169 eyes were submitted to active detachment prophylaxis. In two eyes manifest retinal detachment was discovered and treated successfully. During the same period we saw seven patients with aphakia and retinal detachment who had undergone cataract surgery up to 13 years previously. Tesicon, one of the commercially available 'silicone rubber' lenses, was used in the correction of aphakic patients. In 74% of cases the lenses were considered successful for a daily wear regimen by the patient. Furthermore, a small number of patients could wear this lens without interruption for 3 to 6 days at a time. Despite this good acceptance by patients, corneal problems (mainly staining) and lens problems (dry surfaces) were frequently encountered.

The peripheral retina of 150 aphakic eyes with uncomplicated extraction was studied with the Goldmann three-mirror contact lens. The patients were examined 1 month to more than 2 years after cataract extraction. In addition to degenerations which are descirbed everywhere and are seen both in phakic and aphakic eyes, the authoris have emphasized lesions which they consider to be specific of aphakia. The implanatation of an intraocular lens into the contralateral eye of non-implanted monocular aphakic patients is reviewed. The specific indications, contraindications, and advantages are discussed. The results of a series of 31 cases are presented and analyzed. The generally good results and specific advantages of this technique, when utilized under proper conditions, indicate that it merits inclusion in the ever expanding spectrum of options available to the modern cataract surgeon.
