From the archives of MD Anderson Cancer Center: Crystal-storing histiocytosis associated with B-cell lymphoma.

Crystal-storing histiocytosis (CSH) is rare morphologic manifestation of disease histologically characterized by benign histiocytes, usually numerous, filled with cytoplasmic eosinophilic crystals. More than 200 cases have been reported in the literature. In most CSH cases, affected patients also have a plasma cell neoplasm or B-cell lymphoma. We report a 61-year-old man with a remote history of resected colon adenocarcinoma. As part of surveillance imaging he was found to have a 5.5 cm right ureteral/periureteral mass causing hydronephrosis, multi-station lymphadenopathy and splenomegaly. CT-

From the archives of the AFIP: tumors and tumorlike lesions of the testis: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Testicular carcinoma represents only 1% of all neoplasms in men, but it is the most common malignancy in the 15-34-year-old age group. Germ cell tumors constitute 95% of all testicular tumors. Germ cell tumors are a varied group of neoplasms whose imaging features reflect their underlying histologic characteristics. Seminomas are generally well-defined homogeneous lesions, whereas the nonseminomatous tumors (embryonal carcinoma, yolk sac tumor, choriocarcinoma, teratoma, and mixed germ cell tumor) have a much more varied appearance. Germ cell tumors follow a predictable pattern of spread via t

Linking The Cancer Imaging Archive and GenBank to the National Clinical Cohort Collaborative.

OBJECTIVE: This project demonstrates the feasibility of connecting medical imaging data and features, SARS-CoV-2 genome variants, with clinical data in the National Clinical Cohort Collaborative (N3C) repository to accelerate integrative research on detection, diagnosis, and treatment of COVID-19-related morbidities. The N3C curated a rich collection of aggregated and de-identified electronic health records (EHR) data of over 18 million patients, including 7.5 million COVID-positive patients, seen at hospitals across the United States. Medical imaging data and variant samples are important dat

A Clinical Outcomes Data Archive for a Comprehensive Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Center.

INTRODUCTION: Data on near- and long-term clinical outcomes are critical for the care of all maternal-fetal patients presenting to a fetal center. This is especially important since physiologic and neurodevelopmental attributes do not manifest until later childhood when multilevel (e.g., individual, family, policy) factors have a direct influence on health outcomes. Electronic health records (EHRs) create opportunity for efficient data collection. However, documentation structures are not designed for acquisition of key attributes, and changes over time and between-clinician differences can af

The two decades brainclinics research archive for insights in neurophysiology (TDBRAIN) database.

In neuroscience, electroencephalography (EEG) data is often used to extract features (biomarkers) to identify neurological or psychiatric dysfunction or to predict treatment response. At the same time neuroscience is becoming more data-driven, made possible by computational advances. In support of biomarker development and methodologies such as training Artificial Intelligent (AI) networks we present the extensive Two Decades-Brainclinics Research Archive for Insights in Neurophysiology (TDBRAIN) EEG database. This clinical lifespan database (5-89 years) contains resting-state, raw EEG-data co

Trans architecture and the prison as archive: "don't be a queen and you won't be arrested".

Most incarceration settings around the world are governed by strong cisnormative policies, architectures, and social expectations that segregate according to a person's legal gender (i.e. male or female). This paper draws on the lived experiences of 24 formerly incarcerated trans women in Australia and the U.S. to elucidate the way in which the prison functions according to Lucas Crawford's theory of trans architecture, alongside Jacques Derrida's notion of archive fever. The paper displays how the cisnormative archive of the justice system and its architectural constructs impact trans women i

Understanding Aging in Bipolar Disorder by Integrating Archival Clinical Research Datasets.

OBJECTIVE: Although 25% of people with bipolar disorder (BD) are over age 60, there is a dearth of research on older age bipolar disorder (OABD). This report describes an initial effort to create an integrated OABD database using the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health Data Archive (NDA). Goals were to: 1) combine data from three BD studies in the United States that included overlapping data elements; 2) investigate research questions related to aims of the original studies; and 3) take an important first step toward combining existing datasets relevant to aging and BD. METHODS: Data wer

Assessing fractional hair cell survival in archival human temporal bones.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Histopathological analysis of hair cell survival in human temporal bone sections has historically been binarized such that each hair cell row is rated as either present or absent, thereby greatly underestimating the amount of hair cell loss. Here, we describe and validate a technique to reliably assess fractional hair cell survival in archival sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) using high-resolution light microscopy and optical sectioning. STUDY DESIGN: Technique validation. METHODS: Hair cell counts in archival temporal bone slide sets were performed by

Archival Isolates Confirm a Single Topotype of West Nile Virus in Australia.

West Nile virus is globally wide-spread and causes significant disease in humans and animals. The evolution of West Nile virus Kunjin subtype in Australia (WNVKUN) was investigated using archival samples collected over a period of 50 years. Based on the pattern of fixed amino acid substitutions and time-stamped molecular clock analyses, a single long-term lineage (or topotype) was inferred. This implies that a bottleneck exists such that regional strains eventually die out and are replaced with strains from a single source. This was consistent with current hypotheses regarding the distribution

Fibrinogen Demonstration in Oral Lichen Planus: An Immunofluorescence Study on Archival Tissues.

BACKGROUND: Lichen planus is a premalignant condition with minimal diagnostic aids. This study is an attempt to use paraffin embedded sections of lichen planus with immunofluorescein stain and to evaluate the immunofluorescent sections to establish pattern of fibrinogen deposition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-five paraffin embedded sections of old and new cases of oral lichen planus (study group) and five normal oral mucosa (control group) were chosen. Two sections of each (H & E) case were taken, one was stained with hematoxylin and eosin and another with fluorescein isothiocynate conjugat

Picture archiving and communications systems: a study of reliability of orthodontic cephalometric analysis.

The objectives of this study were to investigate the possibility of using a picture archiving and communications system (PACS) for basic chairside cephalometric analysis and to compare PACS with hand-tracing and on-screen digitization using a commercial program (Dolphin Imaging Plus Version 10.0). One hundred digital lateral cephalometric radiographs were selected and analysed using the Eastman analysis. Angular and linear measurements were recorded and a single operator traced each radiograph twice, using each of the following methods: PACS, hand-tracing, and Dolphin Imaging. The British Stan

My favorite tips from the "clinical interviewing tip of the month" archive.

The "Interviewing Tips of the Month" on the Website of the Training Institute for Suicide Assessment and Clinical Interviewing are supplied by visitors to the Website or by participants in the author's workshops. Each month the author chooses a favorite tip for posting and then adds the past month's tip to the "Tip Archive." This article describes eight effective tips for uncovering sensitive material such as antisocial behavior, substance abuse, and physical violence as well as a technique for improving medication adherence.

Mutation detection in tumor suppressor genes using archival tissue specimens.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a neurocutaneous syndrome characterized by seizures, mental retardation, and benign tumors of many organs, including the brain, kidneys, skin, retina, and heart. TSC is caused by mutations in the TSC1 and TSC2 tumor suppressor genes. The genes follow the two-hit model for tumorigenesis, with germline mutations inactivating one allele and somatic mutations inactivating the remaining wild-type allele. Allelic loss (also called loss of heterozygosity [LOH]) in the 9q34 and 16p13 regions has been found in many tumor types from TSC patients. Cardiac rhabdomyomas

Detection of Coccidioides immitis in Archived Soils from Madera County, California.

In the 1970s, archaeologists excavating sites in Madera County, California, which is now submerged by Hensley Reservoir, contracted coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever), a fungal disease caused by Coccidioides immitis. Soil samples from these sites were archived but not processed due to concerns about infectious arthroconidia. This study investigates whether these decades-old samples, stored at room temperature, still contain Coccidioides and pose a risk to researchers and collections managers. We analyzed 176 subsamples using molecular and culture-based methods, with DNA extractions performed in

How to Look at Sexology: Towards a Meta-archive of Queer Medical Photography.

This article offers a metatheoretical analysis of contemporary research on sexology from and beyond the late nineteenth century. We draw attention to the use of (pseudo)medical photography in this scholarship and the diverse methods developed by researchers to engage with this sensitive material-from the black bar, to description in lieu of reproduction, to affective speculation. Our article equips queer medical humanities researchers with a critical account of the modes of 'looking' we employ in our study of queer history. We demonstrate how the sexological visual archive has become increasin

Characterisation and restoration of a severely damaged paper archive from the Qing Dynasty.

In this study, a severely damaged official document produced in the Qing Dynasty (1911 A.D.), was characterized using a range of techniques and subsequently restored using the traditional Chinese conservation methods. The pH and crystalline index of the paper were measured using a pH meter, attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy. The results indicate that the paper archive is acidic and degraded, which is also supported by the broken fibres as observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Then, the properti

Cerebrospinal fluid microbiome revisited: no evidence of resident bacteria in archived samples.

UNLABELLED: DNA from oral bacteria has been detected in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD). We hypothesized that examination of archived CSF samples from donors with variable cognitive status would reveal evidence of a resident microbiome. 176 CSF samples harvested from community-dwelling individuals (77% between 61 and 80 years old) were analyzed; 57% originated from donors with impaired cognitive status. DNA was extracted after adding microbial spike-in controls, and libraries were prepared and sequenced on an Illumina-MiSeq pla
