Takayasu and temporal arteritis are primary large-vessel vasculitides. Ultrasound directly depicts the inflamed vessel wall, which is homogenously and circumferentially thickened. Furthermore, stenoses and occlusions occur. Ultrasound almost completely depicts the whole length of the common superficial temporal arteries, including the frontal and parietal ramus. Takayasu arteritis is the commonest cause of renovascular hypertension in India. The clinical and radiological features, complications and course of 83 patients (51 females, 32 males) seen during the period from 1972-1990 are described in this study. The age of the patients ranged from 5 to 53 years with the mean +/- SD of 26.9 +/- 9.7. Thirty consecutive patients with severe scleritis or episcleritis were admitted as in-patients to the Medical Ophthalmology Unit and assessed for systemic disease. There were seventeen women and thirteen men. The mean age was 53 with a median of 57 (range 23-83).
