Ergot alkaloids (EAs) are a class of secondary metabolites produced by fungi. These compounds are predominantly synthesized by Ascomycota, with variations in types and biosynthetic pathways among different fungal species. The EA synthesis has minimal impact on the normal growth and development of most EA-producing fungi, but serves as a virulence factor that influences the biocontrol functions of entomopathogenic fungi and symbiotic fungi in plants. In the medical field, EAs have been widely used for treating neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease. However, the biosynthetic pathway…

The influences of combination of garbage enzyme and biochar on total organic carbon (TOC) degradation, humification and the fungal successio … ectively decreased the relative abundance of Unclassified_k_Fugni, while increased the abundance of Ascomycota and Basidiomycota compared with control. The four genera, Pseudeurotium, Talaromyces, Trichoderma, and Penicillium, were the main fungi for the humification. Comparatively, the combined of BC and GE showed the optimal performance for TOC degradation …

Aspergilli play major roles in the natural turnover of elements, especially through the decomposition of plant litter, but the end catabolis … ecific genes in this fungus. Our findings disclose the genetically encoded potential of saprophytic Ascomycota fungi to utilise this pathway and provide means to untie associated regulatory networks, which are vital to heightening their ecological significance.

Geoglossomycetes is a class within the phylum Ascomycota that accommodates a single order and a single family, comprising nine genera. Geoglossomycetes is traditionally referred to as "earth tongues". The class is characterised by tongue-shaped to clavate, stipitate, black ascomata covered with or without black setae, a swollen ascigerous portion, a cylindric stipe, filiform, septate paraphyses, cylindrical-clavate, 4-8-spored asci, and filiform or falciform, multi-septate, dark brown to hyaline ascospores. In this study, we examined 34 samples from four genera in China. Based on ecological co…

The outbreak of fungal meningitis associated with contaminated methylprednisolone acetate has thrust the importance of fungal infections into the public consciousness. The predominant pathogen isolated from clinical specimens, Exserohilum rostratum (teleomorph: Setosphaeria rostrata), is a dematiaceous fungus that infects grasses and rarely humans. This outbreak highlights the potential for fungal pathogens to infect both plants and humans. Most crossover or trans-kingdom pathogens are soil saprophytes and include fungi in Ascomycota and Mucormycotina phyla. To establish infection, crossover f…

Pneumonia frequently causes mass mortality in raccoon dogs, resulting in significant economic loss. Additionally, raccoon dogs carry various zoonotic pathogens. This study systematically assessed pulmonary pathogens in raccoon dogs and their potential public health implications utilizing 2bRAD microbiome sequencing (2bRAD-M) and viral metagenomics. We analyzed 30 lung tissue samples for microbial composition. Sequencing revealed Pseudomonadota, Ascomycota, and Actinobacteria as dominant phyla and Acinetobacter, Escherichia, and Klebsiella as predominant genera. The most abundant species were A…

Olive branch dieback, which is caused mainly by fungal species in Neofusicoccum genus (Botryosphaeriaceae), leads to branch death and irreversible damage. This re-emerging disease in rainfed olive orchards in Spain is linked to crop intensification, the prohibition of the burning of pruning residues and drought. Lepra disease, caused by Phlyctema vagabunda (Desm.) Höhn, is another re-emerging disease associated with shoot dieback in high-density olive orchards. In this study, the behavior of Neofusicoccum mediterraneum Crous, M.J. Wingf. & A.J.L. Phillips, Neofusicoccum parvum (Van Niekerk & C

UNLABELLED: Rock-inhabiting fungi thrive in subaerial oligotrophic environments, such as desert rocks, solar panels, and marble monuments, where organic carbon and nitrogen are scarce. We tested whether the rock-inhabiting fungus Knufia petricola showed a preference regarding nitrogen ([Formula: see text] or [Formula: see text]) and carbon (glucose or sucrose) sources, and whether it was sensitive toward carbon and nitrogen limitation. As this fungus produces the carbon-rich, nitrogen-free 1,8-dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN) melanin, we tested whether a melanin-deficient mutant would be less sensit

Forests are an indispensable resource for human existence in the different regions of the world. Forests are often concentrated in a few parts and vary in size. The most important and extensive green reserve on Earth is the Amazon rainforest. Unfortunately, the forests are continually suffering massive losses due to abiotic stresses and deforestation to obtain other arable lands and microbial diseases, particularly those caused by pathogenic fungi. Pathogenic fungi play an important role in inducing oak decline, which is one of the most relevant forest diseases globally. The pathogens also aff

LysM proteins are widely distributed in fungi of diverse lifestyles, including pathogens of humans and animals. Using bioinformatic methods, LysM proteins have been identified in representative yeasts of medical importance. However, LysM proteins have been found in only four ascomycete yeasts (Candida subhashii, C. tropicalis, Debaryomyces fabryi, and D. hansenii). In contrast, almost all basidiomycete yeasts contain at least one LysM effector but lack subgroup C chitinases. Notably, a unique LysM effector is highly conserved among all the lipid-dependent Malassezia species. The repertoire of

Background: Scedosporium/Lomentospora species are human pathogens that are resistant to almost all antifungals currently available in clinical practice. Methods: The effects of 16 1,10-phenanthroline (phen)/1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione/dicarboxylate chelates containing Cu(II), Mn(II) and Ag(I) against Scedosporium apiospermum, Scedosporium minutisporum, Scedosporium aurantiacum and Lomentospora prolificans were evaluated. Results: To different degrees, all of the test chelates inhibited the viability of planktonic conidial cells, displaying MICs ranging from 0.029 to 72.08 μM. Generally, Mn(I

Most of the currently known fungal laccases show their maximum activity under acidic environmental conditions. It is known that a decrease in the activity of a typical laccase at neutral or alkaline pH values is the result of an increase in the binding of the hydroxide anion to the T2/T3 copper center, which prevents the transfer of an electron from the T1 Cu to the trinuclear copper center. However, evolutionary pressure has resolved the existing limitations in the catalytic mechanism of laccase, allowing such enzymes to be functionally active under neutral/alkaline pH conditions, thereby giv

Powdery mildew disease caused by Podosphaerapannosa is the most widespread disease in global cut-rose production, as well as a major disease in garden and pot roses. In this study, the powdery mildew resistance of different wild rose varieties was evaluated. Rose varieties with high resistance and high sensitivity were used for cytological observation and transcriptome and expression profile analyses to study changes at the morphological and molecular levels during the interaction between Rosa multiflora and P. pannosa. There were significant differences in powdery mildew resistance among thre

The present study reports a new occurrence of Rhinocladiella similis isolated as an endophytic fungus in the Caatinga dry tropical forest in Brazil and describes its antifungal susceptibility. The isolate R. similis URM 7800 was obtained from leaves of the medicinal plant Myracrodruon urundeuva. Its morphological characterization was performed on potato dextrose agar medium and molecular analysis using the ITS rDNA sequence. The antifungal susceptibility profile was defined using the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) protocol M38-A2. The colony of isolate URM 7800 showed slow
