BACKGROUND: Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are detoxifying enzymes that contribute to the glutathione-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) antioxida … TM1 (P = 0.04) and GSTT1 (P = 0.01) but not for GSTP1 (P = 0.83). The odds ratio (95% CI) for serum ascorbic acid deficiency (<11 micromol/L) was 3.20 (1.88, 5.44) for subjects who did not meet the Recommended Dietary Allowance of vitamin C compared with those who did. The corresponding odds ratios (95% CIs) were 2.17 (1.10, 4.28) and 12.28 (4.26, 33.42), respectively, fo …

We examined whether prolonged marginal ascorbic acid deficiency induces oxidative stress in the retina of guinea pigs. Male guinea pigs aged four weeks were given a scorbutic diet (20 g/animal per day) with either marginally deficient ascorbic acid (0.5 mg/animal per day) or adequate ascorbic acid (1 g/animal per day) in drinking water for three and six months. The retinal contents of the reduced form of ascorbic acid in the deficient group at three and six months were 68.1 and 43.5%, respectively, of that in the corresponding adequate group. The retinal contents of the oxidized form of ascorb…

Dehydroascorbic acid, the oxidized form of vitamin C, is transported into mammalian cells via facilitative glucose transporters and hypergly … ment of atherosclerosis and endothelial cells may be particularly affected by hyperglycemia-induced ascorbic acid deficiency as they line the interior of blood vessels. In addition, we discuss evidence of several other mechanisms by which vitamin C status may affect the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, particularly its inverse relationship to multipl …

Young rhesus macaques housed in outdoor corn cribs and fed a commercially prepared primate diet became weak, depressed, were reluctant to mo … adius/ulna. Other, less obvious changes were noted on radiographs. Anemia was a consistent finding. Ascorbic acid deficiency was suspected and therapy was initiated that consisted of vitamin supplements, diet change, cage rest, and support bandages. Feed samples were submitted to a laboratory for analysis and were confirmed deficient in vitamin C. Follow-up radiographs sh …

Methylmercury dicyandiamide (MMD) when given intraperitoneally at a dosage of 4 mg/kg of body weight at weekly intervals for 3 weeks resulte … or 38 days whereas the ascorbic acid deficient controls survived for 47 days. Results indicate that ascorbic acid deficiency can be a factor in the location and severity of clinical signs and lesions of MMD.

The influence of experimentally induced subclinical ascorbic acid deficiency upon antipyrine metabolism was assessed in five healthy male volunteers maintained in a hospital metabolic ward and fed a controlled diet deficient in ascorbic acid. Antipyrine pharmacokinetic parameters were determined four times during the study: at the end of an initial control period, after 28 and 63 days of depletion, and at the end of a second control period. No differences in antipyrine metabolism were observed despite the fact that the subjects had plasma ascorbate levels indicative of vitamin C deficiency (i.…

The ascorbic acid content of guinea pig leukocytes is reduced by a factor of 16:1 between normal and scorbutic guinea pigs. Ascorbic acid deficiencies do not appear to affect phagocytic activity but do change leukocyte morphology. A deficiency of this vitamin appears to significantly interfere with the in vitro bactericidal effectiveness of circulating leukocytes against ingested, cell-associated, and extracellular bacterial cells of the oral pathogen, Actinomyces viscosus. Leukocytes from scorbutic guinea pigs killed 13% of ingested and cell-associated Actinomyces viscosus compared to 83% kil

Copper deficiency was studied in mice to investigate an interaction between copper and ascorbic acid. Twelve-day-old mutant brindled mice that exhibited signs of copper deficiency were compared to their normal brothers as well as to age-matched suckling mice that were copper deficient (-Cu) because their dams were consuming a copper-deficient diet throughout gestation and lactation, and a fourth group of copper-supplemented ( + Cu) suckling mice that served as dietary controls. Dietary copper deficiency was also produced in older mice by beginning the treatment at birth and continuing for 7 wk

The effect of feeding a magnesium (Mg)-deficient diet for 9-34 days to weanling and young male rats on urinary and tissue ascorbate levels were studied. The concentrations of ascorbic acid in the liver and kidney were significantly reduced in the rats receiving a Mg-deficient diet as compared to those receiving a Mg-supplemented diet. The response to trichloro-2-methyl-2-propanol stimulation of urinary ascorbic acid was found to be considerably suppressed by dietary deficiency of Mg, suggesting that the decrease was not due to feed intake. In in vitro studies, the enzymatic synthesis of the vi
