The ability to cause persistent infection is one of the major characteristics of all chlamydial species in their appropriate hosts. Persistent infection with Chlamydia trachomatis and Chlamydia pneumoniae has been implicated in the pathogenesis of many chronic diseases, some initially not thought to be infectious, including pelvic inflammatory disease, arthritis, asthma, and atherosclerosis. Chlamydiae have a unique developmental cycle with morphologically distinct infectious and reproductive forms: elementary (EB) and reticulate bodies (RB). Chlamydiae appear to circumvent the host endocytic

Meteorological data show that disastrous floods are increasingly frequent and more severe in recent years, perhaps due to climatic changes such as global warming. During and after a flood disaster, traumatic injuries, communicable diseases, chemical exposures, malnutrition, decreased access to care, and even mental health disorders dramatically increase, and many of these have dermatological manifestations. Numerous case reports document typical and atypical cutaneous infections, percutaneous trauma, immersion injuries, noninfectious contact exposures, exposure to wildlife, and exacerbation of

This case report describes an immunocompetent female with recurrent subcutaneous emphysema and refractory soft tissue infections involving multiple non-contiguous sites-bilateral breasts, chest wall, and upper limb-over seven years, consistent with disseminated nocardiosis. Initial presentations mimicked bacterial mastitis, with localized swelling, erythema, crepitus, and elevated inflammatory markers. Despite repeated incision and drainage procedures, antibiotic therapies, and bilateral mastectomies, symptoms recurred persistently. Conventional microbial cultures repeatedly failed to identify

First described in 1885, Escherichia coli gradually achieved recognition as a cause of diarrhoea. Strains of E. coli which belonged to a limited number of O-serogroups and had been associated with outbreaks of diarrhoea in hospitalised children were designated 'enteropathogenic' E. coli (EPEC) to distinguish them from E. coli strains that cause other types of infection. The discovery that some strains of E. coli can produce toxins or invade epithelial cells in a similar fashion to established pathogens, such as Vibrio cholerae and Shigella species, shed new light on E. coli virulence. As EPEC

Leg ulcers are a chronic condition. Healing can be long for venous ulcers and the risk of complications is significant. Infection is the most severe complication and can occur in the form of easily diagnosed acute bacterial dermohypodermitis that generally responds well to antibiotic treatment if given at an appropriate dose or in the form of localized infection that is more difficult to diagnosis. Indeed, no consensus has been reached in the literature on the clinical criteria to retain for the diagnosis of localized infection. Similarly, the most appropriate treatment remains to be establish

A forty year old man was seen in 1984 with a four year history of a painful vasculitis that responded transiently to plasma exchange. Diagnosis was revised to atypical pyoderma gangrenosum with further temporary benefit from lamprene and continuing maximally tolerated corticosteroids. The course fluctuated over the next ten years with gradual and increasing soft-tissue damage coupled with superimposed skin infections. A variety of organisms were isolated from the ulcerated areas, with each episode successfully managed on the basis of local debridement and appropriate antibiotic administration.

INTRODUCTION: Doxycycline acts against a broad range of gram-positive, gramnegative and 'atypical' bacteria as well as some protozoan pathogens such as malaria. In this era of increasing multidrug-resistance, recycling of old antimicrobials should be considered and need more focus in this domain of research. We, therefore, aimed to assess the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of commonly isolated pathogens against doxycycline, azithromycin, cefuroxime, and amoxicillin from common clinical specimens by using laboratory-based diagnostic data from western India.

Rats are rodents commonly found in Thailand that carry various zoonotic pathogens. Bacterial zoonosis can occur in a shared environment between humans and rats, especially in human communities and agricultural areas. Escherichia coli, particularly pathogenic and multidrug-resistant strains, is a significant public health concern that is transmitted by rats. This study aimed to investigate the antibiotic resistance (ABR) and biofilm formation of E. coli in caught rodents from Nakhon Si Thammarat province, Thailand. Captured rats were dissected to collect intestinal content for E. coli isolation

INTRODUCTION: Treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has changed with the release of more efficient disease-modifying anti-inflammatory drugs (DMARDs) and biologicals, such as methotrexate, leflunomide and TNF blockers, respectively. However they are prone to trigger potential pulmonary side effects. STATE OF KNOWLEDGES: Diffuse interstitial pneumonitis with alveolar lymphocytosis are induced by methotrexate. This drug increases also the risk of opportunistic infections (Pneumocyctis carinii) and of delayed lymphomas. Many intracellular bacterial infections, about 80 cases of diffuse pneumonit

The rapid spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) represented the most serious issue to public health globally. Hematological patients as immunocompromised hosts are vulnerable to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. There is little information available regarding the clinical features of hematological patients concomitant with COVID-19. In this study, 9 concomitant patients were analyzed for their clinical manifestations, laboratory data, radiological findings, and immunologic features. The median age was 50 years (range, 17-68 years) and 6 patients we

Haemophilus influenzae tends to form part of the usual respiratory flora in adults, especially if they have a chronic underlying disease or are smokers. Pneumonia due to H. influenzae is frequently involved in respiratory infections and its level of resistance to ampicillin has remained stable over the last five years. Most of the literature on the subject was published more than 10 years ago. In this study, we describe the clinical features and evolution of 58 adult patients admitted to hospital for pneumonia due to H. influenzae over a 2-year period, with this group accounting for 6.5% o

Toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems use diverse strategies to control bacterial growth and represent attractive therapeutic targets to fight pathogens. Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium responsible for human tuberculosis, encodes one of the largest repertoires of TA systems. Here, we applied a bioinformatic pipeline to predict candidate TA systems in mycobacterial genomes and identified Rv2663-Rv2664 (RelS-RelI) as a previously undetected system in M. tuberculosis. We show that the RelS toxin is highly toxic and is inhibited by a unique antitoxin, RelI. The 1.70 Å X-ray crystallographic struc

Tomato Atypical Receptor Kinase 1 (TARK1) is a pseudokinase required for postinvasion immunity. TARK1 was originally identified as a target of the Xanthomonas euvesicatoria effector protein Xanthomonas outer protein N (XopN), a suppressor of early defense signaling. How TARK1 participates in immune signal transduction is not well understood. To gain insight into TARK1's role in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) immunity, we used a proteomics approach to isolate and identify TARK1-associated immune complexes formed during infection. We found that TARK1 interacts with proteins predicted to be associ

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is an immune reaction to heparin. It often causes severe thrombosis which may lead to limb gangrene and thrombosis-associated death. The concept of its pathogenesis has been evolving during the past five decades. Initially, HIT was thought to be caused by disseminated intravascular coagulation. Later it became clear that HIT was mediated by an immune mechanism whereby an IgG antibody induced platelet aggregation, release of procoagulant materials and consequently thrombus formation. The antigen comprises Platelet Factor 4 (PF4) and heparin which have a te

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) causes disease in children, presenting as chronic diarrhea that can impair physical and cognitive development. The attachment of typical EPEC (tEPEC) to the gut epithelium via bundle-forming pili (BFP) is a key factor in its virulence. Yet, infections by atypical EPEC (aEPEC), which lack BFP, have become increasingly common. To investigate how aEPEC recover host-attachment in the absence of BFP, we performed experimental evolution using a non-adherent E. coli, constructed to mimic the ancestor of aEPEC, and selected adherent progeny. Highly adherent var

BACKGROUND: Metallo-β-lactamases are bacterial enzymes that provide resistance to carbapenems, the most potent class of antibiotics. These enzymes are commonly encoded on mobile genetic elements, which, together with their broad substrate spectrum and lack of clinically useful inhibitors, make them a particularly problematic class of antibiotic resistance determinants. We hypothesized that there is a large and unexplored reservoir of unknown metallo-β-lactamases, some of which may spread to pathogens, thereby threatening public health. The aim of this study was to identify novel metallo-β-lact

Bacillus subtilis subsp. natto is a specialized functional group essential for fermented soybean production. Despite its industrial importance, genetic differentiation of this lineage remains challenging because of its high genomic similarity within the B. subtilis species complex. Here, we developed and validated a high-precision quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assay targeting the comQ gene-a core component of the quorum-sensing system. Comparative genomic analysis of 70 bacterial genomes, including 9 B. subtilis strains newly sequenced in this study, revealed that the
