Factors predicting patient perception of dysphonia caused by benign vocal fold lesions.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To assess factors that may be predictive of patient perception of dysphonia severity, as quantified by the Voice Handicap Index (VHI) score. We hypothesize that 1) level of vocal demand; 2) auditory-perceptual evaluation of dysphonia severity; and 3) vocal function, as defined by phonatory glottal closure and mucosal wave vibration, are the most significant predictors of VHI score. STUDY DESIGN: : Retrospective review of 100 patients with benign vocal fold lesions. METHODS: Variables assessed for predictive value to VHI score are level of vocal demands, auditory-percep

Alice in Wonderland syndrome following adenovirus infection, manifesting with biphasic perceptual disturbances.

This report presents a rare case of a boy in middle childhood who developed Alice in Wonderland syndrome (AIWS) after an adenovirus infection. During the febrile phase, he experienced persistent auditory hallucinations that continued into the post-febrile period and gradually attenuated, followed by visual perceptual distortions. Neurological examination, electroencephalography and brain imaging revealed unremarkable findings. He had pre-existing hyperactivity, talkativeness and delayed task performance, which were identified after presentation and led to a diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyper

Visual and auditory socio-cognitive perception in unilateral temporal lobe epilepsy in children and adolescents: a prospective controlled study.

AIM: A high rate of abnormal social behavioural traits or perceptual deficits is observed in children with unilateral temporal lobe epilepsy. In the present study, perception of auditory and visual social signals, carried by faces and voices, was evaluated in children or adolescents with temporal lobe epilepsy. METHODS: We prospectively investigated a sample of 62 children with focal non-idiopathic epilepsy early in the course of the disorder. The present analysis included 39 children with a confirmed diagnosis of temporal lobe epilepsy. Control participants (72), distributed across 10 age gr

[Auditory phenomena as differential diagnostics to tinnitus].

INTRODUCTION: In the auditory system, subjective tinnitus is known as phantom perception. Humans also report illusionary misperceptions of real listening impressions and complex scene-like acoustic fantasies without external hearing stimulus. The exact pathophysiological relationships of the auditory phenomena are still unclear. Important comorbidities include hearing loss, brain disease and mental disorders. METHODS: In a literature search in the PubMed database, publications were evaluated until March 2021 on the search terms tinnitus, palinacousis, pareidolia, synesthesia, aura, acoustic h

An imbalance of excitation and inhibition in the multisensory cortex impairs the temporal acuity of audiovisual processing and perception.

The neural integration of closely timed auditory and visual stimuli can offer several behavioral advantages; however, an overly broad window of temporal integration-a phenomenon observed in various neurodevelopmental disorders-could have far-reaching perceptual consequences. Non-invasive studies in humans have suggested that the level of GABAergic inhibition in the multisensory cortex influences the temporal window over which auditory and visual stimuli are bound into a unified percept. Although this suggestion aligns with the theory that an imbalance of cortical excitation and inhibition alte

Does Implicit Racial Bias Affect Auditory-Perceptual Evaluations of Dysphonic Voices?

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to understand the role of implicit racial bias in auditory-perceptual evaluations of dysphonic voices by determining if a biasing effect exists for novice listeners in their auditory-perceptual ratings of Black and White speakers. METHOD: Thirty speech-language pathology graduate students at Boston University listened to audio files of 20 Black speakers and 20 White speakers of General American English with voice disorders. Listeners rated the overall severity of dysphonia of each voice heard using a 100-unit visual analog scale and completed the Harvard

[Synesthesia and autism spectrum disorder : journey on a sensory möbius strip].

In autism spectrum disorder, aphantasia-the absence of mental imagery-and synesthesia-the automatic interaction of sensory systems in response to an external stimulus-mark the extremes of a perceptual spectrum, like a Möbius strip. Synesthesia can link letters and colors, sounds and shapes, words and tastes, spatial mapping and proprioception. More common in this population, it has prompted research into its genetic, neurobiological, cognitive, perceptual and cerebral bases, revealing hyperconnectivity and convergences with sensory overloads of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Stimuli can activ

Auditory cortex and beyond: Deficits in congenital amusia.

Congenital amusia is a neuro-developmental disorder of music perception and production, with the observed deficits contrasting with the sophisticated music processing reported for the general population. Musical deficits within amusia have been hypothesized to arise from altered pitch processing, with impairments in pitch discrimination and, notably, short-term memory. We here review research investigating its behavioral and neural correlates, in particular the impairments at encoding, retention, and recollection of pitch information, as well as how these impairments extend to the processing o

Are text and tune of familiar songs separable by brain damage?

The recognition of text and tune in songs was examined in a music-agnosic patient and five matched controls. Listeners had to focus on one component of the song at a time (text or music) and had to decide whether the component was familiar or unfamiliar. Songs were either matched (i.e., an original familiar or an original unfamiliar song) or mismatched (a combination of a familiar component with an unfamiliar one). Normal listeners displayed response patterns that are congruent with those obtained previously in different experimental settings and which showed that text and tune are difficult t

Visual processing and learning disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Many children are seen by ophthalmologists because of scholastic difficulties in school initially attributed to eyesight when, in fact, the problem often is a result of a disorder of the brain processing vision. A number of neuropsychological conditions predisposing and affecting children with learning disorders will be described. Visual processing is the main brain function allowing normal perception of what is being viewed. Ophthalmologists as well as patients must realize that with normal 20/20 eyesight interpretation of what is seen may be dysfunctional because of faulty

Functional neuroimaging of human central auditory processing in normal subjects and patients with neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders.

Auditory sensory processing in the human cerebral cortex is disturbed in several neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders, ranging from devastating perceptual deficits in neuropsychological syndromes such as cortical deafness and auditory agnosia to the problem of involuntary hallucinatory perception in schizophrenia. With modern non-invasive functional imaging techniques (e.g., PET, fMRI, and MEG), the normal auditory cortical functional anatomy can now be studied in humans in vivo, as well as its disruption in pathological conditions. This article will summarize current knowledge on human

Electrophysiological Testing for an Auditory Processing Disorder and Reading Performance in 54 School Students Aged Between 8 and 12 years.

BACKGROUND Learning to read and write depends on the effective functioning of various sensory systems, including the auditory system. Auditory information processing involves behavioral and electrophysiological processes. Electrophysiological procedures are used to investigate activity in the auditory pathway in response to sound stimuli, and the associated cortical activity in discrimination, integration, and attention. The study evaluated electrophysiological testing for an auditory processing disorder and reading performance in 54 school students aged between 8 and 12 years. MATERIAL AND ME

Deficient auditory processing in children with Asperger Syndrome, as indexed by event-related potentials.

Asperger Syndrome (AS) is characterized by normal language development but deficient understanding and use of the intonation and prosody of speech. While individuals with AS report difficulties in auditory perception, there are no studies addressing auditory processing at the sensory level. In this study, event-related potentials (ERP) were recorded for syllables and tones in children with AS and in their control counterparts. Children with AS displayed abnormalities in transient sound-feature encoding, as indexed by the obligatory ERPs, and in sound discrimination, as indexed by the mismatch

Perceptual auditory gap detection deficits in male BXSB mice with cerebrocortical ectopias.

Underlying impairments in rapid auditory processing may contribute to disrupted phonological processing, which in turn characterizes developmental language impairment (LI). Identification of a neurobiological feature of LI that is associated with auditory deficits would further support this model. Accordingly, we found that adult male rats with induced cortical malformations were impaired in rapid auditory processing. Since 40-60% of BXSB mice exhibit spontaneous focal cerebrocortical ectopias (as seen in dyslexics brains), we assessed auditory gap detection in adult male BXSB mice. Ectopic mi

Central auditory processing disorder: a case study.

We carried out extensive audiologic, electrophysiologic, and neuropsychologic testing on a young woman who complained that she had difficulty hearing in her educational environment. Conventional audiometric results, including pure-tone, speech, and immittance audiometry, were all within normal limits. The subject performed normally on tests involving the processing of rapidly changing temporal information, interaural time and intensity difference detection, and both absolute and relative sound localization. Early, middle, late and task-related auditory evoked potentials were essentially normal

Using auditory reaction time to measure loudness growth in rats.

Previous studies have demonstrated that auditory reaction time (RT) is a reliable surrogate of loudness perception in humans. Reaction time-intensity (RT-I) functions faithfully recapitulate equal loudness contours in humans while being easier to obtain than equal loudness judgments, especially in animals. In humans, loudness estimation not only depends on sound intensity, but on a variety of other acoustic factors. Stimulus duration and bandwidth are known to impact loudness perception. In addition, the presence of background noise mimics loudness recruitment; loudness growth is rapid near th

Central auditory processing in children after traumatic brain injury.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury can impair the central auditory pathways and auditory cortex. Hence, individuals who suffered a traumatic brain injury may be at risk of central auditory processing disorders, which can be identified with behavioral tests that assess central auditory function. OBJECTIVE: To characterize and compare the performance of children and adolescents with and without a history of traumatic brain injury in behavioral tests that assess central auditory processing. METHOD: The sample comprised 8- to 18-year-old individuals of both sexes who suffered moderate or sever

Procedural auditory category learning is selectively disrupted in developmental language disorder.

Speech communication depends on accurate perception and identification of speech sounds, which vary across talkers and word or sentence contexts. The ability to map this variable input onto discrete speech sound representations relies on categorization. Recent research and theoretical models implicate the procedural learning system in the ability to learn novel speech and non-speech categories. This connection is particularly intriguing because several language disorders that demonstrate linguistic impairments are proposed to stem from procedural learning and memory dysfunction. One such disor

The perception of self-produced sensory stimuli in patients with auditory hallucinations and passivity experiences: evidence for a breakdown in self-monitoring.

BACKGROUND: To test the hypothesis that certain psychotic symptomatology is due to a defect in self-monitoring, we investigated the ability of groups of psychiatric patients to differentiate perceptually between self-produced and externally produced tactile stimuli. METHODS: Responses to tactile stimulation were assessed in three groups of subjects: schizophrenic patients; patients with bipolar affective disorder or depression; and normal control subjects. Within the psychiatric groups subjects were divided on the basis of the presence or absence of auditory hallucinations and/or passivity ex
