The Relationship Between Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder in Children Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Orthorexia Nervosa in Their Mothers.

The aim is to examine the relationship between Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) symptoms and sensory sensitivities in children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), as well as the relationship between maternal orthorexia nervosa (ON) and ARFID, and to identify the factors influencing ARFID. The symptom severity of 104 children was assessed using the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS), maternal ON symptoms with ORTO-11, ARFID symptoms with the Nine-Item Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder Screening Tool (NIAS), and sensory sensitivities with the Eyuboglu Sensor

Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder Symptoms Are Not as Frequent as Other Eating Disorder Symptoms When Ulcerative Colitis Is in Remission.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Recent studies have shown that up to 53% of patients with inflammatory bowel disease [IBD] screen positive for avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder [ARFID]. There is however concern that ARFID screening rates are over-inflated in patients with active disease. We aimed to evaluate the frequency and characteristics of ARFID symptoms using the Nine Item ARFID Screen [NIAS], and to use another eating disorder measure, the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire 8 [EDE-Q8], to rule-out/characterise other eating disorder cognitive and behavioural symptoms. METHODS: Partic

The Sensory Profiles, Eating Behaviors, and Quality of Life of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder.

Eating disorders frequently accompany autism spectrum disorder (ASD). One such novel eating disorder is avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). This study compares the eating attitudes, quality of life, and sensory processing of typically developing children (TDC), autistic children, and autistic children with ARFID. A total of 111 children aged 4-10 with a diagnosis of ASD and ARFID (n = 37), ASD without ARFID (n = 37), and typical development (n = 37) were recruited. After an interview in which Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) was administered, Child Eating Behavior Questionna

Comparing stigmatizing attitudes toward anorexia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, avoidant-restrictive food intake disorder, and subthreshold eating behaviors in college students.

OBJECTIVE: The relative stigmatization of various eating disorders (ED) remains understudied, and there is no research examining stigma toward avoidant-restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) or adult picky eating. The present study examined the relative stigmatization of various EDs and the subthreshold eating behaviors that are risk factors for their development, and the relation of gender differences to stigma. METHOD: A sample of 1147 college students was recruited and completed the study online. Participants were randomized and presented with a vignette representing a clinical ED [anore

Prevalence, Phenotype, and Correlates of Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder Symptoms in the Gulf Cooperation Council: An Underserved Region.

INTRODUCTION: Prevalence estimates and correlates of ARFID in non-Western samples are lacking. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of ARFID symptoms, identify its phenotypes, and explore its correlates in a community sample from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). METHOD: Participants were parents of children aged 4-13 years (n = 87) and individuals of ≥ 14 years old (n = 433). They completed the Pica, ARFID, and Rumination Disorder Interview-ARFID-Questionnaire (PARDI-AR-Q), the Nine Item ARFID Screen (NIAS) and the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q). Dietetic-Led Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for ARFID: A Novel Approach to Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder With Case Studies.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive-behavioral therapy for avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (CBT-AR) is an emerging treatment for adults with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). This article explores how CBT-AR can be integrated with and enhanced by the dietetics skillset and presents two case studies in which a dietitian primarily provided treatment within a multidisciplinary team. METHODS: The dietetic-led CBT-AR treatment journeys are described for two patients. We utilised dietetic and psychological assessments to measure change, including: nutrient pathology; weight; Pica, ARFI

Trapped by the Arrows: Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder and the Illusion of Control in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.

We present the case of a 25-year-old female patient with a 20-year history of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), who experienced recurrent episodes of shakiness, diaphoresis, and dizziness, despite normal blood glucose levels. These symptoms were attributed to changes in the direction of the arrows displayed on her continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) device. Further investigations, including capillary and venous blood glucose measurements, ruled out biochemical hypoglycemia. Psychiatric evaluation using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) criteria exc

Pediatric Crohn's Disease With Avoidant and Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) Resulting in Failure to Thrive: A Case Report.

Failure to thrive (FTT) refers to a condition where a child does not gain weight or grow at the expected rate for their age and gender. An accepted definition includes a weight less than the lowest acceptable range on standardized growth charts. FTT is often a diagnostic challenge for providers treating children with mixed etiologies. This report discusses the case of an 11-year-old female with a diagnosis of Crohn's disease and avoidant and restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). Management by an interprofessional healthcare team has been difficult, given the multifactorial nature of the pa

A living experience proposal for the co-occurring diagnosis of avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder and other eating disorders.

The eating and feeding disorder section of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5 Text Revision (DSM-5-TR) is organized by a diagnostic algorithm that limits the contemporaneous assignment of multiple eating disorder diagnoses. Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a disturbance in food intake typically associated with lack of interest in food, food avoidance based on sensory characteristics, and/or fear of aversive consequences from eating. According to the DSM-5-TR, an ARFID diagnosis cannot be made when weight or shape disturbances are present, and ARFID

Modification of an inpatient medical management protocol for pediatric Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder: improving the standard of care.

BACKGROUND: No guidelines currently exist that represent a standardization of care for Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) on an inpatient service. Unique features of this diagnosis (e.g., sensory sensitivity contributing to involuntary emesis) suggest that established protocols that were developed for anorexia nervosa might be less effective for adolescents with ARFID. To inform improved inpatient medical stabilization and care for these patients, we first provide an overview of clinical characteristics for patients with ARFID who presented to a pediatric hospital for inpatient

Vitamin D and hypophosphatemia in patients with anorexia nervosa and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder: a case control study.

BACKGROUND: Refeeding hypophosphatemia (RH) is a common complication of nutritional restoration in malnourished individuals, yet clear risk stratification remains elusive. Individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) may be deficient in vitamin D, an important component of dietary phosphorus absorption in the gut. The relationship between vitamin D and RH in AN and ARFID is unknown. Therefore, the aims of this study were to (1) report rates of low serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D and RH in AN and ARFID; (2) describe associations between phosphorus and

Shared and Distinct Clinical Features in Treatment-Seeking Adults With Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder or Anorexia Nervosa Subtypes.

OBJECTIVE: Available studies comparing clinical features in treatment-seeking adults with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) to anorexia nervosa (AN) often do not distinguish between AN-restricting (AN-R) and AN-binge-eating/purging (AN-B/P) subtypes, rely on retrospective ARFID diagnoses, and include unequal group sizes. Across relatively balanced study groups, we compared eating disorder symptoms, concurrent psychiatric symptoms, and Big Five personality traits in treatment-seeking adults with ARFID, AN-R, or AN-B/P to identify unique and shared features. METHODS: Participant

Avoidant/Restrictive food intake disorder in adults within the community: A mixed-method study on individual impairment and progression.

BACKGROUND: While avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) occurs across the lifespan, most previous research focused on children and adolescents. Particularly, individual impairment and progression patterns in adults remain largely unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to explore individual impairment and to identify progression patterns and associated psychological and sociodemographic characteristics in adults with ARFID. METHODS: Data from N = 97 adults from the community with an interview-based diagnosis of ARFID were utilized. Participants took part in an online study on ARFID a
