BACKGROUND: An association between systemic scleroderma, radiation, and breast cancer has been recognized. However, localized scleroderma in the radiation port of breast cancer patients has been rarely described.
OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to describe the concurrence of localized scleroderma, supervoltage radiation, and breast carcinoma.
METHODS: Patients were prospectively evaluated in a tertiary care cancer center, and the literature was reviewed.
RESULTS: We describe six patients with breast cancer in whom localized scleroderma developed within their radiation port.

BACKGROUND: A novel radiation protection system has recently been shown to shield the primary operator from scatter radiation, but whether it shields other members of the catheterization laboratory team remains unknown.

In experiments with Wistar rats it was found that the increase in the length of the "hexenal dream" during the first week after the effect of a mixture of radiation and heat is much more pronounced than that observed after exposure to radiation alone and independent of the severity of a radiation component (gamma radiation, 4, 6 and 7.5 Gy). The peculiarities revealed in the hypnotic effect of hexenal develop against the background of the postirradiation aggravation of hypoalbuminemia and decrease in the liver ATP.

This paper presents a case study of eleven men who were exposed to non-background ionizing radiation as active participants in the United States' atmospheric nuclear tests. Each of the subjects has developed a virtually identical complex of debilitating psychiatric symptoms. Emergency department personnel experience potential occupational hazards from exposure to ionizing radiation (x-rays). To assess this risk, ionizing radiation exposure was analyzed during a nine-year period for 128 ED personnel. The group consisted of 21 physicians, 92 nurses, and 15 ancillary personnel. Current recommendations for limiting exposure to ionizing radiation are based on the linear-no-threshold (LNT) model for radiation carcinogenesis under which every dose, no matter how low, carries with it some cancer risk.
