The antimicrobial property of the ethanol leaf extract of Hymenocardia acida (H. acida) on some opportunistic respiratory pathogens was evaluated in this study. We also assessed the activity of the extract on tracheal mucociliary activity using murine tracheal mucus exudation and mucociliary motility in pigeons as experimental models. A 40 year old woman presented with dermatitis mainly involving her dorsal feet and shins, a condition which was present for a prolonged period of time. The distribution was suggestive of allergic contact dermatitis, possibly to her shoes. Patch tests disclosed allergy to chromates, cobalt, colophony, all present in leather products, and allergy to myroxylon pereirae (Balsam of Peru). We report the case of a 38-year-old woman who presented with a 10-year history of painful ulcerations on her tongue. She reported that she drank large quantities of diet cola and some orange juice daily and that she used cinnamon-flavored toothpaste and mouthwash nightly. Patch testing elicited positive reactions to balsam of Peru (a fragrance as well as a flavoring agent put in cola drinks that cross-reacts with orange juice) and cinnamic aldehyde. She was diagnosed with allergic contact dermatitis. She was put on a restricted diet and a fragrance-free regimen, and her condition resolved.

Although cinnamon is known to cause dermatitis in bakers and confectioners, it has only rarely been reported as causing trouble in food or cosmetics. The authors followed the frequency of fragrance contact sensitization in Hungary in a multicentre study in the years 1998 and 1999. The risks of incidents and accidents--especially systemic ones--complicating topical scabies treatment in infants are reviewed. After a short review concerning insecticides (sulphur, benzyl-benzoate, DDT, Lindane, Crotamiton) and the use of several drugs proposed for infants, the authors insist on the choice of the drug and the therapeutic protocol, that are as important as the drug itself. Directions for use should be strict, in order to avoid automedication and overdosage. There is no study concerning the comparative evaluation of risks and efficacy of each drug.
