There is a high rate of comorbidity between binge eating (BE) and binge drinking (BD) behaviors, suggesting a common neuropathology. Recently, phosphodiesterase 4B (PDE4B) was identified as a pleiotropic gene associated with comorbid alcohol use disorder (AUD) and anorexia nervosa with BE in a genome-wide association study, implicating PDE4B as a potential contributor to shared genetic risk between these disorders. Here, we developed a novel mouse model of comorbid BE and BD in C57BL/6NJ mice in which mice underwent 10 d of BE, followed by 10 d of BD. Females exhibited cross-sensitization from…

Binge drinking (BD) contributes strongly to the harms of alcohol use disorder. Most rodent models do not result in binge-level blood alcohol concentrations (BACs), and to better understand individual and sex differences in neurobiological mechanisms related to BD, the use of outbred rat strains would be valuable. Here, we developed a novel BD model where after 3+ months of intermittent access to 20% alcohol Wistar rats drank, twice a week, with two 5-min intake (what we called Two-shot) separated by a 10-min break. Our findings showed during Two-Shot that most animals reached ≥ 80 mg% BAC leve…

BACKGROUND: Machine learning could predict binge behavior and help develop treatments for bulimia nervosa (BN) and alcohol use disorder (AUD). Therefore, this study evaluates person-specific and pooled prediction models for binge eating (BE), alcohol use, and binge drinking (BD) in daily life, and identifies the most important predictors.
METHODS: A total of 120 patients (BN: 50; AUD: 51; BN/AUD: 19) participated in an experience sampling study, where over a period of 12 months they reported on their eating and drinking behaviors as well as on several other emotional, behavioral, and contextu…

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Theoretical models of addiction identify craving as a key symptom, but its investigation has been mostly confined to its neurocognitive, psychological and behavioral facets, leaving its other dimensions unexplored. Beyond these approaches, craving could also have a strong bodily component. We explored the bodily sensations of craving in a subclinical population of excessive drinkers.
DESIGN: Observational study. Following a multimodal craving induction, participants reported the bodily manifestations of their current craving state through a body mapping procedure.

Tobacco use and binge drinking are commonly associated with each other and research has shown that reducing smoking may influence alcohol use in alcohol-dependent populations. Although African Americans report a lower prevalence of binge drinking than other racial/ethnic groups, they are more likely to report consequences associated with this behavior. The aim of this article was to study the effect of a smoking intervention (counseling) on binge drinking prevalence and the frequency and average daily alcohol consumption in a sample of African American light smokers (those who smoke 10 cigaret…

Binge drinking has been linked to escalating costs of hospitalisation and to premature mortality, and implicated in a range of acute and chronic health problems as well as crime, violence and other negative aspects of the wider well-being agenda. Variously defined, it can be characterised as brief periods of heavy drinking (across one day or evening) within a longer time-frame of lower consumption or even abstinence (across a week or several weeks). In England the current binge drinking epidemic has become particularly salient in the past decade and has been seen largely in terms of excessive …

Elevated rates of comorbidity between binge eating and alcohol use problems have been widely documented. Prior studies have examined specific personality traits associated with the co-occurrence of these problems. The current study explores comprehensive personality factors that are associated with the co-occurrence of binge eating and binge drinking among a diverse sample of 208 college undergraduates. Using the Five Factor Model of personality, the authors assessed both comprehensive personality factors and style of impulse control, a personality style defined by different combinations of ne…

BACKGROUND: Rates of violence in Russia are among the highest in the world, and violent victimisation represents a major public health threat in the country. As yet, however, little research has been undertaken on what factors are associated with non-lethal violent victimisation in this setting. This study used data from the Moscow Health Survey 2004 to examine the effects of binge drinking and social capital on individuals' risk of non-fatal violent victimisation.
METHODS: A stratified random sampling strategy was used across Moscow's 125 municipal districts to collect data from 1190 individ…

This study describes the development and characterization of a binge drinking model in which a single dose of ethanol (EtOH) is administered by gavage to B6C3F1 mice. Blood EtOH levels were monitored over time after administration of EtOH at doses of 3.0-7.0 g/kg. Peak levels were in the range of 0.2-0.5%, and clearance was complete within 2-12 hr. Substantial increases in blood corticosterone levels were noted. Behavioral changes in EtOH-treated mice aged 8 weeks ranged from no effect (3-4 g/kg) to severe ataxia (6-7 g/kg). In mice aged 16 weeks, a dosage of 7 g/kg caused less of the righting…

Adolescence is a developmental period characterized by behavioral changes such as sensation seeking, impulsivity, and diminished self-control to inhibit behaviors, which can lead to increased risky behavior, including the initiation of binge drinking. Due to the necessity of peer-peer social interactions for proper development, social isolation can be particularly disruptive at this time, altering proper neural development and function and increasing risk for alcohol misuse. To investigate the effects of social context on ethanol drinking, we modulated the social environment of a mouse using s…

BACKGROUND: Head injury (HI) is a serious public health concern related to a wide range of medical and neurobehavioral consequences, including the worsening of adolescent psychopathology and unhealthy substance use. Little is known, however, about whether causes of HI are uniquely related to between-individual differences in impulsivity and binge drinking during emerging adulthood - a life-course period characterized by risk taking behavior and substance use experimentation.

The neuroimmune system of the brain, which is comprised primarily of astrocytes and microglia, regulates a variety of homeostatic mechanisms that underlie normal brain function. Numerous conditions, including alcohol consumption, can disrupt this regulatory process by altering brain levels of neuroimmune factors. Alcohol and neuroimmune factors, such as proinflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNF-alpha, act at similar targets in the brain, including excitatory and inhibitory synaptic transmission. Thus, alcohol-induced production of IL-6 and/or TNF-alpha could be important contributing factors to t

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol binge drinking is common in early pregnancy and is a well-established risk factor for subsequent child health. Yet, very few studies have investigated the effect on fetal growth. Furthermore, it has been speculated that the timing of binge drinking may be a determining factor for neonatal growth. The objective of this study was to assess the potential effect of binge drinking and different drinking patterns (timing and number of binge drinking episodes) in early pregnancy on fetal growth estimated by birthweight and birth length.

BACKGROUND: Acute, excessive alcohol intake has been associated with an increased cardiovascular mortality in otherwise healthy individuals. It predisposes to accelerated atherosclerosis resulting in acute coronary events but also arrhythmias have been described, such as atrial fibrillation and life-threatening re-entrant ventricular arrhythmias. QTc prolongation is associated with an increased risk of ventricular tachyarrhythmias and an independent risk factor for sudden cardiac death. The aim of the study is to investigate the effect of binge drinking on the conduction intervals in healthy i…

Alcohol misuse is a leading cause of preventable death worldwide. Chronic alcohol is associated with disrupted circadian rhythms, yet molecular mechanisms linking circadian rhythm dysregulation and alcohol consumption are poorly understood. Current FDA-approved treatments for alcohol use disorder (AUD) do not target molecular rhythms or sleep-wake cycles. Mammalian circadian rhythms are regulated by transcription-translation feedback loops that regulate expression of 'clock genes' (e.g., Arntl encoding for BMAL1). Both human and rodent studies demonstrate associations between clock gene varian

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of excessive and episodic consumption of ethanol (EtOH, a high-intensity drinking manner) on induced apical periodontitis in rats. Thirty-two animals were divided into the following four groups: control, EtOH, apical periodontitis, and EtOH + apical periodontitis. Ethanol exposure (3 g/kg 20 % w/v EtOH) was performed by orogastric gavage for 3 consecutive days, followed by 4 days of withdrawal for 4 weeks. Lesions were induced by exposing the dental pulp of the lower first molar and by the absence of any treatment/curative for 28 days. Finally, the anim

BACKGROUND: Previous research has demonstrated the utility of subanesthetic doses of ketamine in decreasing binge (Drinking-in-the-Dark, or DID) 20% alcohol intake in female inbred (C57BL/6J) mice when administered 12 hours prior to alcohol access (Crowley et al., 2019). In the current study, we assess the efficacy of a similar ketamine pretreatment using male and female selectively bred, crossed High Alcohol Preferring (cHAP) mice, which also drink to intoxication, but are not inbred. We hypothesized that ketamine would decrease binge alcohol intake without impacting locomotor activity.

Alcohol is a commonly used substance among Vietnamese medical students, especially males. Vietnamese male medical students drink more alcohol, report more intentions to binge drink, and experience more alcohol-related problems than females. As medical students' alcohol consumption may influence their attitudes and medical practice relating to alcohol counseling and prevention, research about the cultural and drinking norms underlying the drinking behavior of Vietnamese male medical students is warranted. This study aims to explore the norms underlying drinking behavior of Vietnamese male medic
