Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on a Biodiversity Biobank: Response and Adaptation.

Introduction: Biobanks (BBs) are essential for biomedical research and biodiversity conservation. The Misionero Institute of Biodiversity (IMiBio), located in Misiones, Argentina, is dedicated to preserving the Atlantic Forest through a One Health approach, integrating human, animal, and environmental health. During the COVID-19 pandemic, one of its laboratories was adapted for diagnostic testing, leading to the establishment of a landmark repository of viral extracts of global significance. In addition, IMiBio contributed to the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in wildlife, expanding its BB and streng

Perennial vegetables: A neglected resource for biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and nutrition.

Perennial vegetables are a neglected and underutilized class of crops with potential to address 21st century challenges. They represent 33-56% of cultivated vegetable species, and occupy 6% of world vegetable cropland. Despite their distinct relevance to climate change mitigation and nutritional security, perennial vegetables receive little attention in the scientific literature. Compared to widely grown and marketed vegetable crops, many perennial vegetables show higher levels of key nutrients needed to address deficiencies. Trees with edible leaves are the group of vegetables with the highes

Bioactivity Profiling of Plant Biodiversity of Panama by High Throughput Screening.

We report relative bioactivities of extracts prepared from a large collection of plants from three national parks in Panama. Over 181 plants were collected, taxonomically identified and their detannified dichloromethane (DCM)-methanolic extracts were used for profiling selected bioactivities. Assays were performed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of the extracts for Antioxidant Response Element (ARE) induction, total non-enzymatic antioxidant potential, anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties. The high throughput analysis of 280 extracts resulted in identification of 57.5% of the extra

Biodiversity and disease: a synthesis of ecological perspectives on Lyme disease transmission.

Recent reviews have argued that disease control is among the ecosystem services yielded by biodiversity. Lyme disease (LD) is commonly cited as the best example of the 'diluting' effect of biodiversity on disease transmission, but many studies document the opposite relationship, showing that human LD risk can increase with forestation. Here, we unify these divergent perspectives and find strong evidence for a positive link between biodiversity and LD at broad spatial scales (urban to suburban to rural) and equivocal evidence for a negative link between biodiversity and LD at varying levels of

An ethical issue in biodiversity science: The monitoring of penguins with flipper bands.

Individual marking is essential to study the life-history traits of animals and to track them in all kinds of ecological, behavioural or physiological studies. Unlike other birds, penguins cannot be banded on their legs due to their leg joint anatomy and a band is instead fixed around a flipper. However, there is now detailed evidence that flipper-banding has a detrimental impact on individuals. It can severely injure flipper tissues, and the drag effect of their flipper bands results in a higher energy expenditure when birds are moving through the water. It also results in lower efficiency in

Biodiversity Insurance of Forest Productivity Has Strengthened Under Recent Climate Change.

Many studies show that tree diversity promotes forest productivity, and few recent ones suggest that this diversity effect may strengthen under climate warming. Yet this pattern has rarely been tested with observations. Here, we investigated how the species mixture affects forest productivity in response to increasing aridity, relying on 25,838 French forest surveys between 2005 and 2016. We showed that 79.8% of the variation in forest productivity was explained by interactions among tree species richness, baseline and temporal changes in water supply and stand density. Although forest product

Synthesis of scale-dependent plant biodiversity change in climate warming experiments.

Climate warming is one of the most pressing environmental challenges for plant populations, communities, and ecosystems on earth. Warming experiments are an important tool for establishing causal relationships between climate change and plant diversity responses. However, results from such experiments vary in direction and magnitude. We hypothesize that such variation arises from context-dependent factors, such as the magnitude of the temperature manipulation, the study duration, the spatial grain of the analysis, the background climate in which the study was conducted, and the biodiversity me

FAIR digital twins for biodiversity: enabling data, model, and workflow integration.

The biodiversity crisis demands computational tools to integrate and analyse complex, disparate data and models. This paper presents the concept of FAIR Digital Twins (FDTs) and, drawing on the work of the Biodiversity Digital Twin (BioDT) project (2022-2025), demonstrates how combining Digital Twins with FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) can transform biodiversity research and decision-making. We show strategies for integrating heterogeneous data, models, and computational workflows within a FAIR framework, paving the way for operational FDTs. The BioDT proje

Rainfall deficit reduces biodiversity and destabilizes a saline-soil plant community.

Rainfall deficits are reshaping plant communities worldwide, yet their impacts on salinity-stressed ecosystems remain unclear. In saline systems, rainfall is essential for flushing soil salts and sustaining biodiversity. Here, we tested the hypothesis that rainfall deficit undermines ecosystem stability by eroding biodiversity in these systems. We conducted a 7-year experiment in the Yellow River Delta, simulating summer-autumn rainfall loss under both ambient and elevated winter-spring temperatures. Rainfall loss increased soil salinity (+43.3% under ambient; +25.2% under warming), promoted s

Bacteriophages in Antarctic subglacial lakes reveal novel biodiversity and biogeochemical potential.

Of the more than 600 subglacial lakes identified in Antarctica thus far, Whillans Subglacial Lake and Mercer Subglacial Lake are the only lakes to have been directly and cleanly sampled. Although hydrologically isolated from direct marine contact for approximately 6.3 ± 1.0 ka, both lakes periodically discharge into the Ross Ice Shelf marine cavity. We present the first direct characterization of bacteriophages in Antarctic subglacial lakes, combining microscopy, metagenomics, and gene-sharing network analyses with bacteriophages found in the Ross Ice shelf marine cavity. The data reveal that

Does Organic Farming Increase Raspberry Quality, Aroma and Beneficial Bacterial Biodiversity?

Plant-associated microbes can shape plant phenotype, performance, and productivity. Cultivation methods can influence the plant microbiome structure and differences observed in the nutritional quality of differently grown fruits might be due to variations in the microbiome taxonomic and functional composition. Here, the influence of organic and integrated pest management (IPM) cultivation on quality, aroma and microbiome of raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.) fruits was evaluated. Differences in the fruit microbiome of organic and IPM raspberry were examined by next-generation sequencing and bacterial

Antibacterial and antifungal activities of crude plant extracts from Colombian biodiversity.

On a global scale, people have used plants to treat diseases and infections, and this has raised interest on the plant biodiversity potencial in the search of antimicrobial principles. In this work, 75 crude n-hexanes, dichloromethane and methanol extracts from the aerial parts of 25 plants belonging to four botanical families (Asteraceae, Euphorbiaceae, Rubiaceae and Solanaceae), collected at the Natural Regional Park Ucumari (Risaralda, Colombia), were evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal activities by the agar well diffusion method. The antibacterial activities were assayed agai

A framework for unit-level biodiversity credit integrity and market-level governance.

Biodiversity credits (BCs) are one innovative financing scheme that the Global Biodiversity Framework proposes to mobilise private capital and narrow the biodiversity financing gap. BCs and the voluntary biodiversity markets (VBMs) around them are nascent, offering an opportunity to learn from shortcomings of the adjacent voluntary carbon markets and design them for both ecological and social integrity from the outset. This paper examines the requirements for the effective functioning of BCs and VBMs at the unit and market levels. We propose a requirements framework based on a horizon scan and

Oral microflora of Trimeresurus snakes in a biodiversity hotspot of North Eastern India.

BACKGROUND: A significant number of snake bites are reported every year from Mizoram, the majority of which are considered to be Trimeresurus erythrurus. The occurrence of deaths from deadly venomous to mildly venomous snake bites has also been reflected in records. Even if the bites are not fatal, they cause a significant problem as they are often associated with secondary bacterial infection. This is believed to significantly contribute to complications in addition to the effect of venom. AIM: Here, we attempt to capture aerobic bacterial diversity from the oro-pharyngeal swabs of wild disp

Biodiversity of malaria ecosystems, challenges for control: When human diversity is forgotten.

Malaria has been affecting human beings since ever through a great biodiversity of transmission contexts, and only recently this vector-borne parasitic disease was controlled and eliminated due to the progress in the knowledge of the pathogens, the mosquito vectors and the transmission cycles, but also technological advances in diagnostic, prevention and control tools targeting both the parasite and the vector. Within the past 150 years malaria was eliminated from all temperate countries of the northern hemisphere, and this success triggered the belief that human malaria could be eradicated wi

An overlooked source of false positives in eDNA-based biodiversity assessment and management.

Biodiversity conservation and management in urban aquatic ecosystems is crucial to human welfare, and environmental DNA (eDNA)-based methods have become popular in biodiversity assessment. Here we report a highly overlooked source of significant false positives for eDNA-based biodiversity assessment in urban aquatic ecosystems supplied with treated wastewater - eDNA pollution originating from treated wastewater represents a noteworthy source of false positives. To investigate whether eDNA pollution is specific to a certain treatment or prevalent across methods employed by wastewater treatment

Biodiversity in the Lyme-light: ecological restoration and tick-borne diseases in Europe.

Biodiversity loss and the emergence of zoonotic diseases are two major global challenges. An urgent question is how ecosystems and wildlife communities can be restored whilst minimizing the risk of zoonotic diseases carried by wildlife. Here, we evaluate how current ambitions to restore Europe's natural ecosystems may affect the hazard of diseases vectored by the tick Ixodes ricinus at different scales. We find that effects of restoration efforts on tick abundance are relatively straightforward but that the interacting effects of vertebrate diversity and abundance on pathogen transmission are

Eating Bushmeat Improves Food Security in a Biodiversity and Infectious Disease "Hotspot".

Hunting and consumption of wild animals, colloquially known as "bushmeat," is associated with health trade-offs. Contact with wildlife increases exposure to wildlife-origin zoonotic diseases yet bushmeat is an important nutritional resource in many rural communities. In this study, we test the hypothesis that bushmeat improves food security in communities that hunt and trade bushmeat regularly. We conducted 478 interviews with men and women in six communities near Cross River National Park in Nigeria. We used interview responses to relate prevalence and diversity of bushmeat consumption to hou

Subgingival biodiversity in subjects with uncontrolled type-2 diabetes and chronic periodontitis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: There is a bidirectional relationship between periodontal disease and type-2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Inflammatory mediators may negatively affect glycemic control, and increased glucose levels and resultant glycation end-products may alter the host response against bacterial infection. However, no agreement has been reached regarding the effect of DM on periodontal subgingival microbiota. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to compare the subgingival biodiversity in deep periodontal pockets of subjects with chronic periodontitis and either uncontrolled typ
