[Research progress and clinical application potential of silicon-based microring resonators in biomedical detection].

Silicon-based microring resonator (SMRR), as a typical application of label-free detection in optical biosensors, performs advantages such as small size, high sensitivity, and ease of integration, making it suitable for detecting physical, chemical, and biological signals. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder with high concealment, while early intervention can effectively slow its progression. For early diagnosis of AD, optical detection platforms based on SMRR can effectively overcome the challenges posed by low-abundance biomarkers and interfering factors in blood

Rethinking 3R strategies: Digging deeper into AnimalTestInfo promotes transparency in in vivo biomedical research.

In the European Union (EU), animal welfare is seen as a matter of great importance. However, with respect to animal experimentation, European citizens feel quite uninformed. The European Directive 2010/63/EU for the protection of laboratory animals aims for greater transparency and requires that a comprehensible, nontechnical summary (NTS) of each authorised research project involving animals is published by the respective Member State. However, the NTSs remain sleeping beauties if their contents are not easily and systematically accessible. The German web-based NTS database AnimalTestInfo is

Tetracyclines Disturb Mitochondrial Function across Eukaryotic Models: A Call for Caution in Biomedical Research.

In recent years, tetracyclines, such as doxycycline, have become broadly used to control gene expression by virtue of the Tet-on/Tet-off systems. However, the wide range of direct effects of tetracycline use has not been fully appreciated. We show here that these antibiotics induce a mitonuclear protein imbalance through their effects on mitochondrial translation, an effect that likely reflects the evolutionary relationship between mitochondria and proteobacteria. Even at low concentrations, tetracyclines induce mitochondrial proteotoxic stress, leading to changes in nuclear gene expression an

Risk and danger on the rise: Representation of intersex variations of innate sex characteristics in biomedical research.

The term intersex was increasingly used in biomedicine in the later twentieth century as a label for bodies with pathologized innate sex cha … x characteristics. This study underscores the critical need for close scrutiny of risk discourse in biomedical research, especially in sensitive areas like intersex variations.

Collaborating for the Successful Retirement and End-of-Life Care of Non-Human Primates in Biomedical Research.

Research facilities have established animal adoption programs for laboratory animals. However, adoption to private owners is not an option for non-human primates (NHPs), so their post-research life presents a unique challenge. Here, we describe a collaborative effort between laboratory animal veterinarians and behavioral management staff in retiring NHPs in place to ensure their quality of life after the completion of research projects. The success of our retirement program hinges on our collaborative efforts to manage clinical diseases such as arthritis, amyloidosis, and diarrhea; to surgical

Biomedical research brings mTBI biomarkers a step closer to the bedside - implementation in clinical practice.

Research in the field of TBI (traumatic brain injury) has long been focused on severe brain injury, while the number of mild injuries far overweigh severe injuries. Mild head injuries constitute up to 95% of all traumatic head injuries. The purpose of this work is to identify mTBI (mild traumatic brain injury) patients who are unlikely to benefit from CT (computed tomography) scanning. Biomarkers capable of clearly discriminating between CT-positive and CT-negative subjects are needed. Biomarkers hold the potential to document whether a concussion occurred, especially when the history is uncle

Balancing biomedical and ecological perspectives in research framing of liver fluke and cholangiocarcinoma in NE Thailand.

This review examines the association of Asian liver flukes and cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) from the standpoint of two contrasting research perspectives: that aligned with the biomedical model predominantly employed to date; and, that aligned with ecological (and evolutionary) thinking increasingly being used to frame research questions that address this association in Northeast Thailand. An examination of the assumptions that underlie most of this research, requisite of evidence-based health research, shows how a broadened research frame that incorporates 'ecologic' perspectives provides alternat

The little death: Rigoni-Stern and the problem of sex and cancer in 20th-century biomedical research.

Approaches to the organization and conduct of cancer research changed dramatically throughout the 20th century. Despite marked differences between the epidemiological approaches of the first half of the century and molecular techniques that gained dominance in the 1980s, prominent 20th-century researchers investigating the link between sexual activity and anogenital cancers continuously invoked the same 1842 treatise by Italian surgeon Domenico Rigoni-Stern, who is said to originate the problem of establishing a causal link between sex and cancer. In this article, I investigate 20th-century re

Development of biomedical publications on ametropia research in PubMed from 1845 to 2010: a bibliometric analysis.

AIM: We have carried out a bibliometric analysis on the development of ametropia literature to determine its growth rule and tendency, and to provide the basis for the problems related to ametropia research. METHODS: Literatures that contained the descriptors of ametropia in title or paper published before Nov. 10, 2010 in PubMed databases (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Pubmed) were selected. As bibliometric indicators of ametropia, biomedical journals referring to ophthalmology by ISSN were calculated. The principal bibliometric indicators: Price's and Bradford's laws were applied on the increase or

Benchmarking large language models for predictive modeling in biomedical research with a focus on reproductive health.

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used for code generation and data analysis. This study assesses LLM performance across four predictive tasks from three DREAM challenges: gestational age regression from transcriptomics and DNA methylation and classification of preterm birth and early preterm birth from microbiome data. We prompt LLMs with task descriptions, data locations, and target outcomes and then run LLM-generated code to fit prediction models and determine accuracy on test sets. Among the eight LLMs tested, o3-mini-high, 4o, DeepseekR1, and Gemini 2.0 can complete at least o

From the biomedical model to the climate-sensitive model: A necessary adjustment for research ethics committees.

Ethics committees are not yet fully integrated into the response to climate change, whether they are national ethics committees (NECs) that issue advisory opinions or research ethics committees (RECs) that review research protocols. This article took this observation as its starting point to consider how ethics committees could support to more accurately assess the consequences of climate change on health, through a lens that focuses on the health of younger and future generations yet within the wider context of ecosystems. From November 2024 to November 2025, the R(H)OPE- The Right To An Open

MiceDEGdb: a knowledge base on differentially expressed mouse genes as a model object in biomedical research.

The fundamental understanding of many biological processes that unfold in a human body has become possible due to experimental studies on animal models. The backbone of modern biomedical research is the use of mouse models for studying important pathophysiological mechanisms, assessing new therapeutic approaches and making decisions on acceptance or rejection of new candidate medicines in preclinical trials. The use of mice is advantageous because they have small size, are easy to keep and to genetically modify. Mice make up more than 90 % of the rodents used for pharmaceutical research. We pr…
