Tamavidin 2 is a biotin-binding protein of the avidin-like family, discovered in Tamogitake mushrooms, that has found a number of uses in biotechnology. Unlike avidin or streptavidin, it can be expressed in Escherichia coli as a soluble protein, making it a good partner in chimaeric proteins. The case of a premature hypotrophic infant who, after 4 months of parenteral nutrition, presented with deficiency in both zinc and biotin is reported. The two deficiencies had similar clinical manifestations: dermatitis, alopecia and susceptibility to infection. The diagnosis was confirmed by zinc blood level measurement on the one hand and by urinary organic acids chromatography on the other. The clinical manifestations can only be prevented by an additional intake of zinc and biotin in doses adjusted to the child's age and to the underlying pathology.

Biotin deficiency was produced in growing kittens by feeding a diet containing dried, raw egg white. After receiving either an 18.5% egg white diet for 25 weeks, or a 32% egg white diet for 12 weeks, they exhibited dermal lesions characterized by alopecia, scaly dermatitis and achromotrichia, which increased in severity with the deficiency. We report a family affected to the fourth generation by uncombable hair syndrome. This syndrome is characterized by unruly, dry, blond hair with a tangled appearance. We report a 36-year-old woman who exhibited progressive optic atrophy at 13 years old, then stroke-like episodes and spastic diplegia in her 20s.
