Recurrence of low birth weight in siblings.

The recurrence of low birth weight (LBW, less than 2500 g) in full siblings was studied in 3286 singleton infants born between 1966 and 1986 to 1677 male U.S. Army veterans who were part of a nationwide health study. Hospital of birth medical records were abstracted for these children. Mean birth weights, risks of LBW, LBW occurring with preterm delivery (less than 37 weeks) (LBW/p), and LBW in term infants (LBW/t) were examined in successive singleton siblings according to LBW status of prior siblings. The risk of LBW in infants who had prior siblings with LBW was 9.9%, compared with a risk o…

Heart murmurs in low birth weight infants.

This study is based on 315 infants in different prematurity stages who were patients in the Special Care Unit for Preterm Infants at the First City Hospital, Sofia. Heart murmurs were observed in 98 infants. The clinical observations and investigations can be grouped as follows: 1) murmurs due to late closing or reopening of ductus arteriosus; 2) murmurs in patients with anemia; 3) murmurs in patient with anemia; and 4) accidental murmurs. The study is focused on the high percentage of heart murmurs in low-birth weight infants during the post-adaptation period.

Intraamniotic infection in low-birth-weight infants.

Intraamniotic infection (IAI) complicating births of low-birth-weight infants (less than 2500 g) was compared with IAI in births of infants weighing greater than or equal to 2500 g for differences in neonatal and maternal infectious morbidity and mortality, as well as differences in microbiological isolates in amniotic fluid. Four hundred four cases of clinically diagnosed IAI were prospectively evaluated. Thirty-seven patients (9.2%) delivered neonates less than 2500 g, and 367 patients (90.8%) delivered neonates greater than or equal to 2500 g. The low-birth-weight group had a significant in

[Rubella infection in low birth weight infants].

Rubella infection in low birth weight infant was investigated with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Thirty Low birth weight infants were included in this study. Seropositive reaction (both Ig G and Ig M) was found in four of the cases. One of the infants who showed hyperbilirubinemia, sepsis and Low birth weight and another case who had tracheoesophageal fistula died in three days. The other two cases which showed seropositive reaction are being followed up as healthy children. We reached the conclusion that Low birth weight may be related to asymptomatic intrauterine rubella infecti…

Hearing loss in low-birth-weight infants.

The hearing of 98 perinatal intensive care survivors with a mean birth weight of 1,540 g was assessed at a mean age of 6 1/2 years. They represented 73% of the long-term survivors with birth weights of 1,800 g or less who had been cared for in our neonatal unit during the three-year period 1971 through 1973. Nine of the 98 infants had sensorineural hearing loss, and 14 had exudative otitis media. During their neonatal period, the infants with hearing loss experienced more frequent apneic attacks, hyperbilirubinemia (serum bilirubin level, greater than 14 mg/dL), and hypothermia compared with t…

Maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein and birth weight.

Maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels between 16 and 18 weeks of pregnancy were studied in relation to birth weight among 4198 singleton pregnancies resulting in a liveborn or stillborn infant without a neural tube defect. The highest mean birth weight (3365 g) was found among infants born to women with AFP values in the range 0.50 to 0.74 times the normal median for the relevant week of gestation. As the AFP decreased from this level to less than 0.25 times the median, the birth weight decreased by 193 g and the proportion of infants weighing 2500 g or less increased from 4 per cent t…

Increase in Weight in Low Birth Weight and Very Low Birth Weight Infants Fed Fortified Breast Milk versus Formula Milk: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

There has been a dramatic rise in preterm births in developed countries owing to changes in clinical practices and greater use of assisted reproductive techniques. However, few studies have examined the growth and outcomes of preterm infants according to the type of feeding (with fortified breast milk or formula). The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of breast milk feedings and formula on the growth and short-term outcomes of preterm infants in Hong Kong. In a single-center retrospective cohort study, we included 642 preterm infants at gestational age <37 weeks with birth weight…

Maternal dietary glycaemic load during pregnancy and gestational weight gain, birth weight and postpartum weight retention: a study within the Danish National Birth Cohort.

Dietary glycaemic index and glycaemic load (GL) have been related to obesity and other health outcomes. The objective of the present study was to examine the associations between maternal dietary GL and gestational weight gain, birth weight, the risk of giving birth to a child large-for-gestational age (LGA) or small-for-gestational age and postpartum weight retention (PPWR). Data were derived from the Danish National Birth Cohort (1996-2002), including data on gestational and lifestyle factors in pregnancy and 18 months postpartum. Dietary data were collected using a validated FFQ. Informatio…

Neurodevelopmental outcome in one-year-old children born preterm: differences between low birth weight and very low birth weight.

BACKGROUND: In preterm infants, low birth weight represents one of the major risk factors for health and developmental issues. In Italy, most of the studies are focused on extremely preterm or very and extremely low birth weight (VLBW, ELBW) children, whereas little data are available on the neurodevelopmental outcome of low birth weight (LBW) children. We aimed to study the developmental profile of a group of preterm children comparing cognitive, language and motor performances between LBW and VLBW. METHODS: We assessed 108 children born preterm (53 LBW and 55 VLBW) at 12 months of corrected…

Expired Tidal Volume Variation in Extremely Low Birth Weight and Very Low Birth Weight Infants on Volume-Targeted Ventilation.

In a prospective study we describe the delivery of small tidal volumes to extremely low birth weight (ELBW) and very low birth weight (VLBW) infants using a volume-targeted ventilation mode (VTV). Tidal volume delivery was consistent for both ELBW and VLBW infants independent of gestational age, birth weight, and the target volume.

[Effect of breastfeeding quality improvement on breastfeeding rate in very low birth weight and extremely low birth weight infants].

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of breastfeeding quality improvement on the breastfeeding rate in very low birth weight (VLBW) and extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed for the clinical data of VLBW and ELBW infants who were admitted from July 2014 to July 2015 (pre-improvement group) and those who were admitted from August 2015 to June 2016 after the implementation of breastfeeding quality improvement measures (post-improvement group). The parameters including condition of breastfeeding (breastfeed…

Kidney volume-to-birth weight ratio as an estimate of nephron endowment in extremely low birth weight preterm infants.

In humans, nephrogenesis is completed by 32-36 weeks gestation, with a highly variable total number of nephrons, ranging from 200,000 to ove … rns grow. In this observational study we hypothesize that the relationship between renal volume and birth weight may serve as an indicator of nephron endowment in premature infants with birth weight less than 1000 g. This finding could represent the basis for defining appropriate surveillance protocols and developing targeted therapeutic approaches.

Dietary Arginine Supplementation Improves Intestinal Mitochondrial Functions in Low-Birth-Weight Piglets but Not in Normal-Birth-Weight Piglets.

Our previous studies revealed that L-arginine supplementation had beneficial effects on intestinal barrier functions of low-birth-weight (LBW) piglets, which were associated with the enhanced antioxidant capacity. Moreover, mitochondrial functions are closely related to the redox state. This study was to explore potential mechanisms of L-arginine-induced beneficial effects against intestinal dysfunction by regulating mitochondrial function of LBW piglets. Twenty 4-day-old normal birth weight (NBW) piglets (BW: 2.08 ± 0.09 kg) and 20 LBW siblings (BW: 1.16 ± 0.07 kg) were artificially fed eithe…

Childhood cognition and lifetime risk of major depressive disorder in extremely low birth weight and normal birth weight adults.

In general population samples, better childhood cognitive functioning is associated with decreased risk of depression in adulthood. However, this link has not been examined in extremely low birth weight survivors (ELBW, <1000 g), a group known to have poorer cognition and greater depression risk. This study assessed associations between cognition at age 8 and lifetime risk of major depressive disorder in 84 ELBW survivors and 90 normal birth weight (NBW, ⩾2500 g) individuals up to 29-36 years of age. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Revised (WISC-R), Raven's Coloured Progressive M…
