Quality of life in patients with blepharospasm.

The aim of this prospective study was to analyse the quality of life in patients with blepharospasm grade III and IV and to explore whether Botulinum neurotoxin type A treatment improves their quality of life. We used a WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire, based on the existing WHO recommendation and its meaningful metric characteristics. The study included 37 patients with either grade/type III or IV blepharospasm who were treated with Botulinum neurotoxin Type A. Each patient completed the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire by themselves just before the Botulinum Neurotoxin Type A (BT-A) therapy application, w…

Is increased blinking a form of blepharospasm?

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether increased blink rate (BR) is part of the clinical spectrum of primary blepharospasm (BSP). METHODS: We enrolled 40 patients (16 patients with an increased BR but without typical orbicularis oculi [OO] spasms, and 24 patients with typical involuntary OO spasms) and 18 healthy subjects. The BR, blink reflex recovery cycle, and somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold (STDT) were tested in patients and controls. RESULTS: Patients who had typical OO spasms had an altered R2 recovery cycle whereas those who had an increased BR alo…

A case with improvement of blepharospasm by zolpidem.

Zolpidem is usually used for the treatment of insomnia as a hypnotic drug. It was also suggested to be effective in the treatment of dystoni … lacebo injection and neostigmine test. This is the first report which shows improvement of isolated blepharospasm by Zolpidem in Korea. Zolpidem can be one of useful alternative pharmacological treatments for blepharospasm. Further randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled studies are needed to validate this finding.

Swallowing disorders in patients with blepharospasm.

Blepharospasm is a focal dystonia characterized by involuntary eye closure due to abnormal contraction of orbicular eyelid muscles. When blepharospasm is associated to the presence of involuntary oromandibular movements, it is termed Meige syndrome. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of deglutition alterations in patients with concurrent blepharospasm and Meige syndrome. Twenty consecutive patients were studied by video fluoroscopy using a barium technique. The 4 stages of deglutition were investigated. Ninety percent of patients (18 cases) presented deglutition disorders. T…

Treatment of essential blepharospasm with quetiapine.

A 69-year-old male with blepharospasm unresponsive to several medications who was successfully treated with quetiapine is described. His symptoms were largely alleviated by low doses, but he experienced sedation, which permitted him to take the medication at bedtime only.

Quality of life in patients with blepharospasm.

OBJECTIVES: Administration of botulinum neurotoxin A (BONT/A) is a common and effective treatment of blepharospasm. There is, however, no information regarding the emotional and social well-being of patients with blepharospasm and patient acceptance of BONT/A therapy. The purpose of this study was to investigate aspects of quality of life of patients with blepharospasm and level of patient satisfaction with treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty-one patients with blepharospasm who had been treated with BONT/A for years completed a questionnaire providing information about quality of life. RE…

[Treatment with botulinum toxin in blepharospasm].

Blepharospasm is a cranial dystonia characterized by forceful spasms of the orbicularis oculi muscle which may lead to functional blindness in approximately two-thirds of patients. Botulinum toxin injections is a simple procedure, very effective and with little morbidity. It is considered as the treatment of choice for patients with disabling blepharospasm.

Apraxia of lid opening in blepharospasm.

Apraxia of lid opening is a nonparalytic motor abnormality characterized by difficulty in initiating the act of lid elevation. It has been reported with extrapyramidal disorders, including Parkinson's disease, Huntington's chorea, progressive supranuclear palsy, and Shy-Drager syndrome. We found seven cases (7%) of functionally disabling apraxia of lid opening in 100 consecutive blepharospasm patients studied. It is important for physicians treating blepharospasm to be aware of the association between these two visually debilitating disorders.

Blepharospasm: a review of 264 patients.

The natural history and response to different treatments have been evaluated in 264 patients with blepharospasm. The mean age of onset was 55.8 years and there was a female preponderance of 1.8 to 1. Dystonia elsewhere was found in 78% of patients, usually in the cranial-cervical region, and appeared to follow a somatotopic progression. A family history of blepharospasm or dystonia elsewhere was found in 9.5% of cases, which suggests a genetic predisposition. Ocular lesions preceded the onset of blepharospasm in 12.1% of cases. The response to drugs was inconsistent, although initial improveme…

Botulinum toxin in the management of blepharospasm.

Seventy-seven patients with blepharospasm unresponsive to other forms of therapy were treated with botulinum A toxin. The drug was injected into the orbicularis oculi muscle of both upper and lower eyelids and, in some patients, into the brows and upper part of the face as well. A total of 192 treatment sessions were given, with follow-up ranging from four weeks to 18 months. Orbicularis muscle spasms decreased markedly over the first five days following injection, both in patients with essential blepharospasm and in those with hemifacial spasm. Beneficial effect was temporary, however, and re…

The use of botulinum toxin in blepharospasm.

Twenty-two patients, 17 with benign essential blepharospasm and five with hemifacial spasm, received botulinum toxin by subcutaneous injections in the eyelids and eyebrows. All 22 patients received a standard treatment of 12.5 units of botulinum toxin per side at each injection session. The orbicularis oculi muscle showed pronounced weakness after injection and the spasms decreased. Spasms often recurred despite persistent orbicularis oculi muscle weakness. Side effects were minimal. All patients received some relief, which generally lasted six to 12 weeks.
