A Case of Preserved Blood Flow to the Portal Vein Due to the Concurrent Reconstruction of the Superior Mesenteric Vein and the Splenic Vein Using an Artificial Blood Vessel.

Pancreatic cancer is often advanced and invades the major blood vessels around the pancreas. Portal vein (PV) and/or superior mesenteric vein (SMV) resection is performed for radical resection. In such cases, end-to-end anastomosis is best if the remnant vein is sufficiently long. However, when the excision distance is long, reconstruction requires an artificial blood vessel. In contrast, there is no consensus concerning the need for splenic vein (SV) reconstruction. We herein report a case in which portal vein thrombus and congestion of the bowel that occurred after PV-SMV reconstruction were

Potential causes and significance of elevated blood ketone levels in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) remains challenging. Given the critical role of metabolic disturbance and energy expenditure in HFpEF pathophysiology, we investigated the clinical significance and diagnostic value of blood ketone bodies in these patients. METHODS: This case-control study enrolled 160 participants, comprising 80 HFpEF patients and 80 matched healthy controls. Baseline characteristics, levels of blood ketones (acetoacetate, β-hydroxybutyrate, acetone), and NT-proBNP were compared. Multivariate linear regression and correlation

Inhibition of LncRNA H19 Attenuates Testicular Torsion-Induced Apoptosis and Preserves Blood-Testis Barrier Integrity.

Testicular torsion is a common emergency in adolescents, and can lead to severe ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI). LncRNA H19 has been shown to increase during ischemia, but its role in testicular IRI remains unknown. Focusing on this research gap, we utilized H19 biallelic mutant mice and Sertoli cell line (TM4) to construct in vivo and in vitro models of ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) and oxygen-glucose deprivation/reperfusion (OGD/R). Compared to WT I/R mice, H19-/- I/R mice showed milder tissue disorganization and cell loss, with a more intact blood-testis barrier (BTB). The cell viability dec

Cognitive and physical performance are well preserved following standard blood donation: A noninferiority, randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: A walking blood bank (WBB) refers to the use of fellow combatants for battlefield blood donation. This requires pretesting combatants for infectious diseases and blood type. A fundamental prerequisite for this technique is that the donating soldier will suffer minimal physiological and mental impact. The purpose of the current study is to assess the effect of blood shedding on battlefield performance. METHODS: This is a double-blind randomized control trial. Forty Israel Defense Forces combatants volunteered for the study. Participants underwent baseline evaluation, including repe

Primary Posterior Fossa Lesions and Preserved Supratentorial Cerebral Blood Flow: Implications for Brain Death Determination.

BACKGROUND: Patients with primary posterior fossa catastrophic lesions may clinically meet brain death criteria, but may retain supratentorial brain function or blood flow. These patients could be declared brain-dead in the United Kingdom (UK), but not in the United States of America (USA). We report the outcome of adult patients with primary posterior fossa lesions without concurrent major supratentorial injury. METHODS: Henry Ford Hospital database was reviewed over a period of 88 months in order to identify all adult patients with isolated brainstem or posterior fossa lesions. We excluded

Preserved oxygenation despite reduced blood flow in poststenotic kidneys in human atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis.

Atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis reduces blood flow and perfusion pressures to the poststenotic kidney producing renovascular hypertension and threatening glomerular filtration rate. Little is known regarding regional tissue oxygenation in human renovascular disease that develops slowly. We compared stenotic and contralateral kidneys regarding volume, tissue perfusion, blood flow measured by multidetector computed tomography, and blood oxygen level-dependent magnetic resonance values in the cortex and medulla in 14 patients with unilateral stenosis (mean: 71% by quantitative computed tomo

Alpha lipoic acid alleviates oxidative stress and preserves blood brain permeability in rats with subarachnoid hemorrhage.

The neuroprotective effect of alpha lipoic acid (ALA; 100 mg/kg, po), a dithiol antioxidant, on experimentally induced subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) was assessed in Wistar albino rats. Neurological examination scores recorded at the 48th h of SAH induction were increased in SAH groups, which were accompanied with significant increases in the formation of reactive oxygen species, DNA fragmentation ratios, malondialdehyde levels and myeloperoxidase activity, while significant decreases in the brain glutathione content and Na(+), K(+)-ATPase activity were observed. On the other hand, ALA treatmen

Detection of Bartonella bacilliformis in cultures, blood, and formalin preserved skin biopsies by use of the polymerase chain reaction.

A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is described for the detection of Bartonella bacilliformis, the etiologic agent of bartonellosis, which cannot be identified biochemically. Amplification of a genomic 231 bp Bartonella DNA sequence permitted specific identification of 12 Bartonella isolates from Peruvian bartonellosis patients as well as detection of Bartonella DNA in blood samples and formaldehyde preserved skin biopsies. Specificity of amplification products was confirmed by restriction fragment analysis. No positive results were obtained with Brucella abortus, phylogenetically closely relat

Hypohydration Increases Heart Rate Despite Preserved Hemodynamic Compensation During Blood Flow Restricted Exercise.

During blood flow restriction (BFR) exercise, blood becomes sequestered in the active limbs due to impeded venous return, contributing to central hypovolemia. Dehydration also reduces blood volume and can exacerbate the ability of the cardiovascular (CV) system to defend against CV stressors, such as exercise and orthostatic stress. As BFR becomes more widely used, its application in individuals who may be suboptimally hydrated underscores the need to understand how hydration status influences cardiovascular strain. We tested whether hypohydration affects the CV response to BFR exercise and it

Assessing antibody stability in filter paper-preserved blood samples for wildlife disease surveillance in tropical forests.

Dried blood spots (DBS) on filter paper are widely used for serological diagnosis because they require minimal blood volumes and enable storage and transport without refrigeration, making them particularly useful in remote and resource-limited settings. However, DBS-based serology may be compromised by methodological variability and the lack of standardized preservation protocols. We evaluated the effects of preservation factors and quality indicators on DBS serological performance for Toxoplasma gondii, a pathogen with a broad host range and limited seasonal variability. We analyzed 787 dB sa

Validation of Guanidine-EDTA as a Preservative Agent for the Analysis of miRNAs and mRNAs in Blood Samples of Chagas Disease Patients.

Chagas disease (CD) is a neglected tropical disease caused by the flagellate protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, representing a major socioeconomic challenge. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNA molecules that regulate gene expression, and several pathogens, including T. cruzi, can modulate host miRNA networks. In this context, we hypothesized that host-derived miRNAs could serve as biomarkers in chronic CD. Given the intrinsic lability of RNA, we evaluated the efficacy of a 6 M guanidine-HCl/0.2 M EDTA solution, widely used in the molecular detection of T. cruzi DNA, in preserving mRNAs and

Kisspeptin-10 Preserves the Blood-Brain Barrier's Integrity Post-Stroke by Augmenting Claudin-10 Expression.

The integrity of the Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB) is crucial in the pathophysiological progression of acute ischemic stroke (AIS). However, the potential of Kisspeptin-10 (Kp-10), with its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, has not been explored experimentally in the context of stroke management. This study aimed to investigate the neurovascular protective effects of Kp-10 following cerebral ischemia using both in vivo and in vitro models. A middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model was established in C57BL/6 mice, followed by Kp-10 administration. Neurological deficits (Longa scor
